McNally on Hunter

Nice little interview...

On why they wouldn't let their songs be used for commercials......

“No, that’s not going to happen. The Grateful Dead is something separate from the conventional world. We’re not going to be pimping for GM.’”

And that pretty much sums up my objections to Dead$Co.  They are nothing but the conventional world.

So Dead&Co is pimping their songs on commercials now?

They're just doing what the Grateful Dead always did, and certainly what they were doing the last ten years of their existence, playing shows to have fun and make money. LOTS of money.

And that line about the Grateful Dead being separate from the conventional world is a great story but is ultimately a bunch of BS, especially in this context.

Jerry was quoted often enough that from the very beginning they were always trying to "sell out" but no one was buying. They had some ethics about how they'd use & sell their music, or at least Hunter did, but most things "unconventional" about the Grateful Dead were them being a bunch of derelict fuckups far more than having some higher moral standards.

And god love 'em for that, but let's not reinvent history just to make a good story.

GD songs were used on television commercials long before Dead and Co.

I loved that article

As is par for the course.. Lance has this explained quite clearly here and I'm in full agreement.

^^^^I have been looking for this since the late 90's. Saw it once, a friend had a VCR copy, and it was accidentally erased.  So campy and a total crack up^^^^

"First Friday Extreme Shopping"

I heard White Rabbit on tv the other day,  in a god damn cruise line commercial. It was a real WTF moment

I took that to mean they supply doses.
