why is this fight so widely publicized? i never near anything about boxing until recently, now everyone is talking about this fight, is it a championship or something?

It was an unusual match up.
It was an unusual match up. Mayweather (49-0,now 50-0) vs a successful mixed martial arts fighter who never boxed professionally. As with any big prize fight, the hype was hyper. So basically a young scrappy Irishman with a skill set he couldn't apply, challenged a very seasoned boxer and a lot of money changed hands. He did better than most people expected but by round 10 he ran out of steam and was out punched 2:1.

In many ways it was yet
In many ways the event was yet another moment in the never-ending competition between young generation vs old generation.
Old-timers side with the "purity" of traditional boxing while the younger set loves the newer, more explosive (violent) UFC fighting.
The teens at the high school I work at were all talking about and looking forward to the match, which has never happened with any boxing match in my experience, and they were all rooting for the UFC guy, sneering at boxing, thinking it dull.
In that way I think it was an interesting event, despite the fact that it was just an exhibition that had no real relevance and was as always a massive money-grab. I doubt it won over any young fans to boxing, but it did get people interested and talking about boxing.
(I was rooting for the boxing guy. I'm an old-timer who likes tradition)

It was a boxing match not a UFC fight. Kind of contradictory statements there.
