This photo of the hearty Pasque flower was actually taken from last month although could've easily been this morning ... since we had about 3" of snow.  Just walked by them about 40 minutes ago & they're no worse for the wear (snow melted).   These are always the first flowers to bloom in the season up here at 9,700' elevation  ... and there's a clump of them that re-appear in the same spot every spring.

My 2 or 4 Frost shows. 82 and 86

Big fire a few blocks from the house last night, took 9 hours to put out.  It was pouring most of the time too.  Heavy old rotten timber, lots of propane tanks, and creosote, what could go wrong?  (Good thing this wasn't late August!)

Yes, have lived at 9700' year round for 17 years and was at 8750' since '94 prior.    Unfortunately, the altitude is getting the better of my body ... and have been having difficulty breathing / exercising for the past few years.   I did about 20 miles of hiking with 3k' elevation gain over three days with very little issue in Moab area (4-5k') this past weekend (photos below), but was huffing and puffing to get to those flowers yesterday afternoon .... 100' elevation and no more than a quarter mile.   Do you live at a high elevation?

I'm not sure about trichomes, but yeah, every time I see hairs on plants like that I can't help but make the comparison!

> Do you live at a high elevation?

I'm at about just about half your elevation, but most of my favorite places are above 8000'. That's my idea of heaven.

I did two years at 10K and that was when I was way younger. It was hard then and I definitely couldn't do it now. 17K is the highest I've been. Never had problems with altitude but that shit can sneak up on you at any time even if it has never bothered you before. I need more than a few days of summer and just a little more moisture in the air than inside a dry sauna.

You're preaching to the choir!  It'll be hard to move one day, but consider myself to be lucky to have lived up here while I did.

After speaking with a few doctors in the area, it seems10k (or slightly lower) is an "upper cutoff" for some people ... along with a lower ceiling of around 6-7k for a lot of folks.   It's weird, my father's oxygen saturation dips into the low/mid 80's when he's above 7k' with very little in the way of symptoms, but mine is stable at around 92-94 yet can have some challenging symptoms.  I had a right heart catheterization last year to determine whether I have pulmonary hypertension (that could be affected by altitude and/or exercise).  Luckily I don't, but they did uncover what is known as a "preload insufficiency" ... apparently my veins aren't returning the blood back to my heart fast enough.

But yeah, it can sneak up on you ... I've never made it to 17k, but would regularly hike to about 13k and realized I haven't been able to do this for a decade and my ceiling gradually became lower and lower.  I was like a frog boiling in water.  I did notice my overall capacity would permanently diminsh a bit after contending with prolonged exposure to wildfire smoke.

Listen to the Flower People!

Thought I recognized that intersection ... and have probably taken it well over 100x on route back and forth to visiting family in the Scottsdale area from Colorado.

It's funny since there are two turning lanes (oncoming too) at that intersection and I will typically select the lane that is most advantageous to jockey around trucks that lumber through it.

I like the I-40 "bypass" of downtown Flag, but will still try to make a pit stop at Macy's for coffee and a bite .... or New Dehli Palace in the before times (haven't eaten indoors since, let alone a buffett).

Do you live in Flag, FP?

Right on Face!  Great geolocating.   Yeah im on outskirts of Flag for better part of decade.

Any of you Zoners heading by N.AZ should always email me because I BUY pizza @ Fratelli Pizza (Best in Flag like 20yrs. running) for my kind who say hi.  Kind as well.

It looked extremely familiar at first, but wasn't sure until I looked it up .. maybe it's because of all the puzzles I've been doing over the pandemic.  Are you far enough on the outskirts to not hear that casey whistle blow?

I see there are three Fratelli's, one being a stone's throw from Macy's.

Face, I'm finding your train pics fascinating the last few months. I think they'd make a great thread of their own if you were inclined to add some text to let us know what we're seeing.

I've been hi-jacking the train photos from a FB group, but have taken most of the other one's I've posted.

Here's another of the "Galloping Goose" near the Ophir Loop (about 2.5 miles from where I'm at).   I believe the GG was a Great Depression era innovation that created a locomotive out of a truck ... and operated on the existing narrow guage lines of the old Rio Grande Southern in the area.

Maybe I was wrong about Depression era, or maybe they operated concurrently with "regular" trains ... since here's one from 1945.

Car owners left open Cheetos bag in car overnight.  Javelina came along was like "aww Hell Yeah!"  Though in process of jumping into the car the hatchback shut, trapping the critter inside.  He was cool until the Pigs showed up.  (Pigs & Javelina don't mix)

Siletz Bay was right outside the condo and I was able to dig up dozens of clams at low tide, which were promptly converted into a couple different types of chowder:
