Max Headroom is here

The 'world's first' A.I. news anchor has gone live in China.

[A TV anchor has joined a Chinese news agency, but with a twist: he isn't human. China's state-run Xinhua News Agency has launched an artificial intelligence (AI) anchor, a move it claims to be a world first.

"English AI Anchor" debuted Thursday at the World Internet Conference in the country's eastern Zhejiang Province.

Modeled on the agency's Zhang Zhao presenter, the new anchor learns from live videos and is able to work 24 hours a day, reporting via social media and on the Xinhua website. "'He' learns from live broadcasting videos by himself and can read texts as naturally as a professional news anchor," the company said in an online statement.]

Max Headroom is a fictional artificial intelligence (AI) character, known for his wit and stuttering, distorted, electronically sampled voice. He was introduced in early 1984.

Here's the new AI guy:

(I'm just postulating myself, but I think it's reasonable to assume, based only from his posting style, that a certain cinematographer Zoner might be an experimental AI "Phil-fan", probably programed by a couple of grad student pranksters in Santa Cruz.)

In case you are too young..... I recommend you check out some episodes.

From Wikipedia:

The background story provided for the Max Headroom character in his original appearance comes from a dystopian near-future dominated by television and large corporations. The AI of Max Headroom was shown to have been created from the memories of crusading journalist Edison Carter. The character's name came from the last thing Carter saw during a vehicular accident that put him into a coma: a traffic warning sign marked "MAX. HEADROOM: 2.3 M" (an overhead clearance of 2.3 metres) suspended across a car park entrance.

Max Headroom originally appeared in the British-made cyberpunk TV movie Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future, which was broadcast in 1985....The final spin-off from the original film was the dramatic television series, Max Headroom, which was broadcast in the United States, running for two short seasons (mid-1987 and late 1987), with two more episodes shown later in 1988.

So here's a thought......(pardon, it's early and I haven''t thought this thru, yet...)

What if you program an AI to play guitar with only early Jerry and Grateful Dead, from say...1965 to 1970 or even up to 1974/5....

Could the thing come up with new Grateful Dead music that would emulate how Jerry would sound now? (so, without the antecedent of 2 decades of chronic opiate use and physical deterioration. And of course all the "modern" digital influences would be missing.)

To answer the question... What would the world be like if Jerry never developed a fondness for Persian and all other narcotics? What would a clean Jerry sound like or a still alive Jerry sound like?

I guess you would also have to program in all the popular culture music from August 1, 1942 onward (but that's doable) and all the other stuff in Jerry's record collection...

I prefer Ron Headrest...

Oh shit -- here's another recent article about AI and how fake human images can be more easily generated nowadays (of course it started with porn)

I think the future is gonna be pretty fucked up

The Robot Revolution will take place in 2028.

Maybe I'll be dead by then.
