The Mavericks

Forums:

I recently heard some kind things mentioned about The Mavericks here and noticed that are scheduled to close out the summer concert season out at the West Hampton Beach Performing Arts Center (or WHBPAC).

The concert had almost sold out in a few days. Out selling Drive By Truckers, D. Zappa, Hot Tuna, and Lucinda Williams by a long shot.

Once again, I'm behind the eight ball. I had quick YouTube tutorial to realize, I better bust a move if any seats free up. Well about 8 seats freed up in the front row and I grabbed one.

The Mavericks have added shows that are not yet listed on their web site:

9/15 - Stone Pony, NJ

9/16 - Beacon Theater

I have a good one

It was about 3 years ago at the Strawberry Music Festival in Grass Valley

The Mavericks were the closing band on Sunday. Strawberry has a strict rule of no dancing in front, only low back chairs allowed in front. All dancing must be done on the sides or the back. Well, Raul was not going to have any part of that rule and told everyone to stand up and dance in front. Lots of the old folks got up, picked up their chairs and walked off. A few songs later the crowd was in a fever swirl, dancing, hooting, just having a grand ole time. All of a sudden they made the show stop, made the band go off the stage and tried to get everyone from the front of the stage to the sides. Raul said FU, if you want to dance dance wherever you want to. Strawberry said no and the show would be stopped.Raul said I am not coming out till they can dance in front. About ten minutes later the band came out, started playing again. Same thing happened and the show was stopped.

The Mavericks had a clause in their contract saying if they don't follow their rules they will not be paid.

It still was a great show, almost a riot scene with the folks who wanted to dance. I have been to many a Strawberry and never seen anything like this happen before. This was a mixed crowd with some hardcore Mav fans who follow them all over on tour. I heard later Strawberry said it was mostly due to the Grass Valley hippie factor that people like to dance up here.

Sad to say I don't think the Mavericks will be ever asked to play another Strawberry anytime soon if ever.

I think Budboy might have a copy of the show, I know he was there.

seen them 2x. were incredible both times.

have tickets for a show here in october.

they are a good fuckin' time.

Thanks guys. They sound about as much as fun as band can be.

Great rockin' story, Bart.

The video I posted did a big edit of the parts about stopping the show. I guess you had to be there.

The Grateful Dead played at these very Fairgrounds in  83. I was at this show, a bunch of us drove from Lake Tahoe, a few years later I moved here to live. I now live only a few miles away from the Fairgrounds  I am so glad I moved from NJ in 1970

Saw them in late 80's early 90's in Miami at the Cameo theater. They opened for a lot of hardcore punk bands. Saw them at least a dozen times, there sound is much more refined now and with more latin sound. They would always be booed by the punks and a lot of shit was thrown at them. I always would go in early for them, they were cool in my book.

My favorite singer is Raul Malo. My favorite live band are the Mavericks. Incredible studio work. Eddie Perez is one of my favorite guitar players ever. This is one tough band to follow at a festival. They deliver every time.

the last show i saw raul did a 3 or 4 song solo set in between and sang orbison's blue bayou... one of the best male live vocals i've ever heard. mezmorizing.

The Mavericks Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center show is next Sunday 9/2 and I'm really looking forward to it.

The show is sold out and I'm looking for an extra ticket.

Both the Beacon & the Stone Pony shows still have seats available, fwiw.

Thanks for G-2 folks.

I crack me up.

Like the Mavericks too. They are fun.

Cracks me up too.

Once I got it.
