A strange tune that Jerry sang only a few times. What’s the dealio?
I just ran across it listening to 3/23/95 barely stuck in between Corrina and Drums. By the way deadbase says this show has the first space since 2/20/91, not played for 306 shows.
3/23/95 is a really fun show to listen to, even though it has rough patches. Matilda was a great addition to the repetoire, a great groove. Bruce really drives it in this show, and if you can handle a Corrina jam, that portion of the show is actually really hot and fresh.
Tend to agree with Scwa it's mostly a throw away song although it was nice to have something curious in the mix.
I'd head to 3.21.94 which was basically the break out minus lyrics. Deadbase once wrote about that show..."Finally a real dead show". The He's Gone Matilda jam was plenty fun....as the Lovelight stella lovelight.
I don't know if he sang it in a movie, but it's on his best-selling "Live At Carnegie Hall" double LP set from the early 60's Folk-Era days. I think it's an old traditional Caribbean folk song. I'm sure they were all familiar with it. Wonder if one of them just started riffing on it in soundcheck, and the rest all jumped right in?

& then the response:
Second one with lyrics was at the Unbroken debut ....
I'm confused by this response ... not sure it really matters where Matilda "officially" gets recognition, but Unbroken debut was the next year, '95 ... which is a completely different year. Jerry starting singing Matilda at Deercreek in '94. If anyone is curious ...
I think what was referred to was that the second time the band played it with lyrics was the Spectrum show that Unbroken Chain was debuted at .3-19-95, and Matilda was first played with lyrics at Deer Creek in 94. The Richfield Spring 94 Matilda was without lyrics

Second one with lyrics was at the Unbroken debut, the mini highlight of a snoozer 2nd set.
Alternate Lyrics:

My Zelda
My Zelda, she took the money and ran with the tailor
My Zelda
My Zelda
My Zelda, she took the money and ran with the tailor
My Zelda she found her big romance
When I broke the zipper in my pants
My Zelda, she took the money and ran with the tailor

My Zelda, she took the money and ran with the tailor
It's almost too sad to tell to you
She took 7 books of green stamps too
My Zelda,…

Didn't Harry Belafonte sing
Didn't Harry Belafonte sing it in some flick? Maybe Jerry was channel surfing pre-tour.

Maybe I saw some film footage of that, Dave. In my mind's eye, it's in black & white, and his outfit is shiny.
Or there are dancers in shiny outfits.
