nice one Highnote!

.... although seeing the old home page makes me sad thinking that Robert Hunter is no longer with us ... I think was the webmaster in the early stages?

Cool Mike, hadn't seen that one.

Looks like Bill is trying to cut Garcia off at the pass....

Yep, Local, there's a lot going on in that pic (which I found on Reddit yesterday). I love the young dude at left of center. I can't tell if that's an interpretive dance thing, or a basketball move. And Bill definitely has something on his mind.

It's real cool to see the old dead.net home page, which was Hunter's thing for sure, FOM. I hung on DNC a bunch before finding the Zone.

Bryen Greg and Dank?

lol @ fishcane

He's shooting hoops, there is a coach with another ball standing there also. Elastic ping pong in the background too. Most concerning tho is the guy smelling his fingers behind Jerry. The woman looks guilty so I'm sure we know the story

That "coach" looks suspiciously like Bob Barsotti.

Cool pic Mike. Is that John Mayer shooting hoops. Those were the only Greek shows I saw.

The hoops shooter is David Graham.

There was someone who used to live in town who was a regular at shows in the area and he broke out the "hoops shooter" on the dance floor every now and again.

Not sure if it's just my projection, but it looks like Jerry is making a b-line to his "own space" (away from the crowd) in that shot.

Description of Greek Theatre pic from Gans:

Greek Theater, Berkeley, July 1984. Also: Bill Graham and Peter Barsotti (mustache, behind Bill). Bill's son David Graham completing a basketball shot at the left. Frances Shurtliff (Ram Rod's wife) in the shorts and hat just to the left of Jerry. Not sure who the guy is who is walking right behind him.

The guy behind Jerry could be this guy whoever he is. Seems to work for the band

Also seen here at the US Fest in the background with Scully. Looks like a drug deal is going down.

This post is really gonna feel like the old Zone, but how do you post a frickin picture?

If I click on the "insert picture" icon as instructed, it doesn't bring me to a place to browse & choose picture. It just opens a blank, vacant window w no options.

Give that blank window some time to load, Cam; this is a clunky process. Once the window populates, you should see this:

example.jpg

Click on Upload, select your file, click on Upload underneath the file selection, wait awhile for it to load, and then click on Insert File once the file is uploaded; you can see the image at that point.

The other way to insert images is to link to a file on the internet by using the Source function in the editor. This is a much faster way to post pics.

Here's an example: <img src=https://vivalazone.org/sites/default/files/zoner_images/acc.jpg>

(Don't worry about the color of that or the underlining; that's done automatically for URLs.)

That line of code yields this image:

>>>wait awhile for it to load

and by this he means wait like you are downloading porn on a dial up modem in 1998

Thanks, Mike. I used the box, and got some error. Can't quite wrap my mind around the source file method...
It's ok. I must have zoned 3 or 4 years on the old zone, before I could post a pic successfully.

Error could mean the file is too large. Resize it. Easy to resize it in Windows Paint.

Cam, there's a limit on the file size, and that might have been the error you got. If the image is 768 KB or less you should be okay. Also, images that are more than about 900 pixels wide usually don't display properly. Finally, you can upload gifs, pngs, or jpgs.

> wait like you are downloading porn on a dial up modem in 1998

lol. You are absolutely correct, Nino, but of course we're talking about downloading still images back then, not video.

it took me like five years to understand the photo posting thing on the old zone.

damned if imma try and learn a second method lol

20210309_083749.jpg

When we had dirt bikes in 70-75 (10-15 years old) I remember gas and cigarettes being as low as .35 cent per gallon and pack, and the gas station we went to had a machine that we could buy smokes. Back then it was usually an older neighborhood kid that worked at the gas station pumping gas so buying cigarettes was no problem as a pre-teen.  Me and a few others in the neighborhood had dirt bikes, Honda 50s, Yamaha 125s and I had a Honda CB 100 street bike that I tore the front fender off for trail riding. When I got to be sixteen it became my street bike to get around.

$6.50 seems steep for 1970, but that's a pretty sweet line-up. Mike Gordon must've been about 5 years old.

The date was Saturday, May 16th 1970 and the place was the old Temple University Football stadium in the quiet neighborhood af Mount Airy. The place was never the same after this legendary outdoor daytime festival presented by Temple! First a few local bands took stage, followed by the Steve Miller Blues Band and then the two groups everybody came to see--The Grateful Dead and The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The joyful noise was so loud the vibes could be heard several miles away. What a time it was!

^^^Great pic of the Train Horns Mike!

I was in DC for the climax and saw them bust out the horns over a year before ( I'm thinking Nassau )

Can we talk about the "Om" and the slow return of Casey Jones?

I pulled that from Reddit, Sigmund. Nassau 92.

Did you see the Sammy Hagar TV show where he visited Mickey and they played with the train horns?

Sweet I saw Nassau spring 92

The Om symbol was all over the lot. They Busted out Casey Jones on summer tour in DC 6/20/92

How long did they do the train horn thing before they finally played Casey ? Thought it was over a year.

That video is very cool, Druba. I think The Dude would approve.

I remember those train horns blasting in Buffalo!

>>>Rooster....

Yeah I know but the dog just thinks it's a chicken. She has no interest in the turkeys probably because they are always in packs.

I think Owsley passed on the 12th.

Here is him dancing on stage behind Garcia (behind the amps) at Ventura 85 during  Walikin' Blues. Look for the twirler with the white shirt and blue arms. Walking starts at 17:37 .

Wikipedia sez Bear passed on the 13th. He was in Australia, so maybe it's an international date line thing.
