Magnetic Screwdriver

Forums:

It's amazing, it's a miracle!

I recently couldn't proceed with an essential project without a magnetic screwdriver but I didn't have one. So, my son told me that you can put a magnet on the metal shaft of a screwdriver and the tip will be magnetic as long as the magnet is there. And it works! It really does function as a magnetic screwdriver as long as the magnet is there.

It turns out that even more people know this, but I didn't. So great! Wow!

whoa. i didn't know that either, so that's 2 of us. ;)  oxo

It's a beautiful thing.

It really is, C>R.

Yes, LLOLLO, 2 of us.

Juggalos might have a problem with this.

Huh? I don't know enough about Juggalos to get that.

You can also save/acquire the round, magnetic housings of (failed/broken) small motors for the purpose of temporarily magnetizing tools which works even better as you do not have to have the magnet stay on the tool. I know most people don't have stuff like that laying around so I will try to post a pic later on. I usually leave one on a workbench with tools in it for ready access or quickly rotate tools through it for a quick treatment.

I have a very powerful flat round magnet on a "pole" to use to collect screws, nails, staples, etc, from the floor. The magnet is at the perfect angle to pick things up. But Strawbud, I could store tools on it in the same way -right? I didn't even think of it. Thanks.

If you like magnets then you will love earth magnets, well maybe not. They are so strong you really have to pry things off of them

I did not know this either.

Must've been crazy for people to encounter naturally occurring magnetic items in the environment thousands of years ago.

Yes, Judit, that will work too - and the stronger the manget(s), the better/quicker it will work too. Good Stuff!

fabes, when my neighbor lent me a magnet with a magnetic screwdriver, it was an earth magnet. He cautioned me to be very careful about what it stuck to; don't put it on the fridge, and so on. It did get stuck to the leg of the heater/stove I was working on and it was a hell of a pull to get it off. Like a slide to the edge of the leg and then pull as hard as I could. Luckily the leg has a smooth enamel-like coating. I was very careful to keep it away from anything it might stick to after that.

I just looked up earth magnets and they come in all shapes and sizes. For now, I'll stick with the magnets I have; I have a variety and they seem to work for my usual needs.

2 oz vodka

4 oz orange juice

1/2 tsp metal filings.

I remember a gearhead neighbor showing me how to use some part of the engine to magnetize the head of a screwdriver (to fish out fallen carburetor screws from inaccessible places).  The alternator, maybe?

That's what I thought this thread was about before I opened it -- cocktail recipes!
