Lynyrd Skynyrd are set to make one last tour. Today, they announced the first leg of the Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour, which will take place this spring and summer.
“It’s hard to imagine, after all these years, the band that Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins and myself started back in Jacksonville, would resonate for this long and to so many generations of fans," guitarist Gary Rossington said. "I’m certain they are looking down from above, amazed that the music has touched so many."
Lead vocalist Johnny Van Zant added, “We’ve been blessed by these great songs and the messages they carry to the fans. It’s been a true honor to try and fill in my brother’s footsteps for the past 31 years, keeping the music and his spirit, alive.”
The tour will begin on May 4 at the Coral Sky Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, Fla. and conclude Sept. 1 at the Cellairis Amphitheatre at Lakewood in Atlanta. Tickets for most dates go on sale to the general public on Feb. 2 at 10AM, with a pre-sale for Citi cardmembers taking place from Jan. 30 at 10AM until Feb. 1 at 10PM. The exceptions are the July 20 show in Mansfield, Mass., where tickets go on sale at 11AM, and the Aug. 10 date in Detroit, where tickets go on sale on Feb. 3. The complete calendar is listed below and you can get full ticketing information, including VIP packages, at their website.
Throughout the tour, they will share the stage with many of their friends, including Kid Rock, Bad Company, Marshall Tucker Band, 38 Special, Hank Williams Jr., Charlie Daniels Band, Blackfoot and Blackberry Smoke.
Rossington has been beset by health problems. Last November, the band canceled two shows due to an undisclosed medical emergency, and several issues with his heart, including a heart attack in October 2015, has sidelined the band in recent years.
In conjunction with the tour, Lynyrd Skynyrd will release a single called "The Last of the Street Survivors." Further details on the song, and which acts will be at which shows, are forthcoming.

I suspect the band calling
I suspect the band calling itself Lynyrd Skynyrd will once again rise from the ashes once Gary and friends' bank rolls start looking a little thin.

I don't know man, this probably will be the end for Gary. How many heart attacks can you have??
But there's still an opportunity for Johnny Van Zant's Lynyrd Skynyrd Experience. Jason Bonham has been doing it for years

True, Pretty much what the band has been since Billy and Leon checked out.
In the past decade, the band calling itself Lynyrd Skynyrd reminds me of the axe that a friend's uncle had, which was the very axe that George Washington had used to chop down the cherry tree. Its handle had been changed eight times and the axe head five times.

Hey Free Bird
Hey Free Bird
I remember when Skynyrd. J. Giels and Peter Frampton played JFK in Philly on 6/11/77. Kind if like JFK, you know where you were when you heard the plan went down and I was in between classes in high school. Alas, I can't remember why, I didn't go but my buds did. Anyway, I saw Skynard at the ole Sportatorium on May 29, 1988--first time they were back there since the crash. Rossignton's band opened up. I will say, while a stone cold Dead Head, I have a soft spot and passion for good ole Skynard and their music. Their first 4 albums are among the best rock guitar albums ever--such a crunchy sound.
I might have to catch the Shoreline show just to say thank you, boys!

I thought that was in '77?
I thought that was in '77?
My next door neighbor got my brother and I into them (and the Dead) at the end of the '70's.
Very sorry I never got to see the original band; bro saw the Rossington Collins band
a couple of times and thought they were very good.
Rest In Peace my old neighbor T.C.! One of the good ones!
(Died of a heart attack a couple months ago in his late '50's. Owe him
a huge debt of gratitude).

The first and only time that
The first and only time that I saw Skynyrd was in 1977 in Portland, Maine. Foreigner and .38 Special opened. I was a sophomore in high school. Rode the rail with a bottle of Jack Daniels which when offered to Ronnie, was drained by about 1/4. Four months later he was gone.
Also saw the Rossington - Collins band once, again in Portland but haven't seen any of the Skynyrd incarnations after the crash.
I think I might like to see one of these shows.

I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd at Nassau w Ronnie Van Zant 6/16/77 Ted Nugent opened up for them I was in 8th grade. I had tix to see them at The Garden Nov. 78 but the Freebird fell from the sky in the words of Henry Paul.
I saw them when they got back on the road in 1987 on their "reunion tour" and remember that show being a lot of fun.

The original band was
The original band was something special. I think they all lived together in poverty and just lived on music in the beginning. I think this is the way many great bands start. I hated freebird cuz it was constantly on the radio but they have some great early stuff. Organic, tight, authentic and original. AND I like Neil young too

Saw the original lineup at the Spectrum on 4/16/76. Ronnie was taking swigs out of a bottle of Mateus and spitting it out on the people up front. "What are you complaining about, it's only wine!" They put on a great show.
