Looking for some hot 78-79 Dead shows

Forums:

For whatever reason I've somewhat ignored late 70s Dead for far too long. Ditto for early 80s. Maybe it's hearing songs like Eyes played at a breakneck pace that turned me off. But I've been cranking some 78 shows while working from home and looking for some more recommendations.

Obviously the Durham show is a scorcher. Jerry must've scored some killer blow in North Carolina. Windmilling during the Truckin outro, getting on the drums and played the rockin'est U.S. Blues I've ever heard. I've also went through 10-17-78 Winterland, 1-22-78 Eugene and 4-22-78 Nashville the last couple days.

I remember Jerry saying Keith was repeating his guitar lines around this time and was in bad shape. Seems like Jerry was picking up a bigger load with some more blistering guitar.

Any must-hear shows from this era? Preferably complete on Youtube.

this show is solid but not a mindblower or significantly better than other 79 shows, but the kevin tobin matrix recording of pauley pavilion 79 contains a pretty great moment at the beginning of the 2nd set opening shakedown...the band starts a few noodles, the crowd starts getting wild, people on all sides of the mic start yelling "shakedown street!", and the opening chord is absolutely devastating when it finally hits. IMO its the kind of moment and feeling that are rarely captured on tape, and when they are, like in this case, its fleeting.

sbd recordings do not have the same impact - gotta be the kevin tobin matrix

One of my favorites is 4/15/78 - William & Mary - the only Morning Dew of 1978.  The set list looks regular for the time (other than the Dew) but it is a great show.  It was the first time I saw the band with Jerry in the middle; Bob and Phil were the bookends.

Being home town shows, Ive always been partial to these Pittsburgh 79 shows. Soooo good! The Dancin in the Streets from 11/30 is killer!

Lots of good choices, '79 in particular was a good year. I'm naturally inclined to put up the Closing of Winterland as it's one of the greatest shows they ever played, but that one is too obvious.

There are many good east coast shows in '79 that I'm sure people will post, here are a couple of real good and long ones from the west coast from '79, one with Keith & Donna, one with Brent...

2/17/79 - K&D's final show with some good breakouts and IMO brilliant versions of many songs, including Lazy Lightning & High Time. Also the band's first show at the Oakland Coliseum -

4/22/79 - Brent's first show, and the first show with The Beast, so a very long & good drums (if you're inclined to listen to that sort of thing on tape). It's also as good a soundboard recording as you'll ever hear, amazingly clean & clear -

That one with Dancing >Jerry solo with drums. Philly?

4/16/78 and 2/3/79

Some good stuff here, thanks for the heads-up. I can get through about 2 full shows per shift so I'm going to hit all of these I can find on Youtube.

Listening to 1-22-78 Eugene the other day and I noticed it had the "Close Encounters" Saint Stephen.

And here's the Durham U.S. Blues I mentioned. This has to be the wildest Jerry over got on stage. All of this show is on video except maybe a few cutouts.

I'll always be partial to my first show, UCLA Pauly Pavillion, the night before they closed Winterland (a much tighter show per Mickey)

Arguably the best performance of "Ollin Arrageed" (with Hamza El-Din), and there was a slide show of the Egypt shows above the stage during the performance.  12 song first set (didn't fit on a 90 minute tape), Epic 2nd set, simply wow!!!

Set 1;  Jack Straw, They Love Each Other, Mama Tried > Mexicali Blues, Loser, Looks Like Rain, Stagger Lee, Passenger, Tennessee Jed, Minglewood Blues, Sugaree, Promised Land

Set 2; I Need A Miracle > Bertha > Good Lovin', Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain, Playin' In The Band > Shakedown Street > Drums* > Ollin Arrageed* > Saint Stephen > Not Fade Away > Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad > Around & Around**

E: One More Saturday Night

* w/ Hamza El Din,  Bill Walton / Bill Graham, and several others, drumming / chanting

** w/ Mathew Kelly on Harmonica

Oops, I didn't catch the part about youtube preference.

Here's the 2/17/79 Oakland show...

Unfortunately it doesn't look like the full 4/22/79 San Jose Brent show is on youtube, but some good individual parts are. Highlights...

I haven't listened to this source yet but I think it's the only one with the whole show.

The Scarlet-->Fire is very long and very good; ripping Other One also. (And the Weir joke is always funny).

Last show of the mini winter Midwest tour.

I agree with the above about Donna and Keiths last show. It's fantastic, especially from Big RR Blues on. The Wheel is so dreamy like smoking some opium.

This has always had a good reputation. Especially the Terrain/Playin' segment. I agree

I love the Brent and Jerry playing in late 79. And whole band.

Third night

Do any soundboard exsist of that Mississippi Fairgrounds show?

Lots of good recommendations on this thread for 1978 and 1979. Those were moderate touring years for me. Shows that I saw that I would recommend, 5/10/78 at New Haven, 5/14/78 at Providence, 1/10/79 at Nassau, 10/27&28/79 at Cape Cod and 11/30 & 12/1/79 at the Stanley in Pittsburgh.

"Do any soundboard exsist of that Mississippi Fairgrounds show?"

The Relisten app, which apparently still has the boards that were once available on archive.org, does have one in it's selections for this show, and it's a Charlie Miller transfer.
