Sebastian Sawe, a 29 year old Kenyan, became the first human to run a marathon in under two hours today in London, shattering the previous record by 65 seconds.  
 

The runner-up also ran under 2 hours, and the 3rd place runner also beat the old world record.

Ethiopian athlete Tigst Assefa set a women's world record for a women's only race.

What a day for the races in Londontown!

 

Great day for marathon running. Sawe ran mile 24 in 4:12. That's mind boggling.

I think today is the Eugene marathon. I hope I can drive to where I need to be. Grumble grumble.

Yes.  Usually track and swimming World Records are eclipsed by seconds or fractions of seconds,  not by minutes,

It is being referred to as a "moving the goalposts moment" for the Marathon, similar to what Bob Beamon did for the Long Jump.
