A Little Is Enough

Forums:

From Pete Townshend's "Deep End Live" concert recorded at London's Brixton Academy, November 1st & 2nd, 1985, transferred from the original laserdisc release.  The band includes Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour, keyboardist John "Rabbit" Bundrick and drummer Simon Phillips.

A little too '80s slick for my taste, but IMO Townshend would be much better creatively served these days touring with a band like that that than with the soggy Who's Left. but of course his bank account is much better served that way.

I've always felt Townshend is one of the elite Mt. Rushmore of Rock talents, and while I haven't seen the modern version of The Who for quite a while it has seemed to me a waste of his late era but still top quality skills to be re-hashing the same show over & over with a band that IMO doesn't reach the level of power & unique quality to be called The Who.

I plan on seeing the Who Review at Outside Lands later this summer. I'll do my best to not walk in with expectations and it's always great to hear that electric guitar, especially on a blasting sound system in the glorious Polo Fields. We'll see.

BTW, you forgot to mention that David Sanborn is in that all-star '80s Townshend band as well (and I love the brilliant English drummer Phillips front-running with that 49ers jersey).

Yup, agreed ^^^ he's def Mount Rushmore material

I'm with Lance on this one, that video is just sad

it has seemed to me a waste of his late era but still top quality skills to be re-hashing the same show over & over<<<

Agreed.  I have always thought that he has the potential to be "reborn" by:  shuffling the deck from a larger repetoire (GD style), re-arrangements, more improv not caring about whether every "number" is rehearsed/perfect ... but I suspect this has never been his general approach.

Pete will be doing a handful of solo shows after the Who's current tour concludes:

TOUR: PETE TOWNSHEND’S CLASSIC QUADROPHENIA WITH BILLY IDOL, ALFIE BOE

SEPTEMBER 2 2017    LENOX, MASSACHUSETTS    TANGLEWOOD
SEPTEMBER 9 2017    NEW YORK, NY    THE MET
SEPTEMBER 10 2017    NEW YORK, NY    THE MET
SEPTEMBER 16 2017    LOS ANGELES, CA    THE GREEK

Sounds like like another run through Quadrophenia, which I'm sure will be fine, however, I would prefer a true solo tour with selections from Who Came First, Rough Mix, Empty Glass, ATBCHCE, White City and The Iron Man.  He could play 4-7000 seat theaters and cement his legacy.

I agree that the first video I posted suffers a little from 80's production values.  I thought you all would enjoy the version with David Gilmour in the band.

Here's another version from August 7, 1993 at the Brooklyn Academy Of Music you might prefer:

This was a very prolific period for Pete; with some very inspired performances and broadcasts.

Roger is also doing solo dates, or at least I seen one for Ft Lauderdale Hard Rock
