I don't know the venue, but I agree with all the other takes so far.
For quite a while I knew nothing of them but I would see their name, mostly as part of summer festivals, and I figured they were "just" another R&R jam band, based only on what their name conjured in my mind.
When I saw them for the first time I had no idea what type of music they played, and I was really pretty blown away, both by surprise that they were a funk band with horns and also by how good they were.
So yes, I agree that they're really good, with kind of a dumb name.
They're at the Fillmore in SF next Friday, and I may well be there.
Show was good last night. Tight, punchy funk mixed with psychedelic jams. Could use some more vocals (keyboard dude sang about every third or fourth song) and some of the song heads were a little too smooth sailing, but every tune was guaranteed to evolve into a sick jam:
Roseland was the Roseland, It was a full house, but not super uncomfortably packed as it can be. Rode the rail for the first set, but by second set it was getting a bit crowded up front so we ended up moving back for the second half. That was fine until a couple of maskless hippies got into my space towards the end of the show. The Roseland's notorious yellow shirts were on good behavior and were basically serving as the mask police. Show went pretty late - 12:30 am.
As for the name of the band, according to its members, it goes back to when they were music students and cut their teeth sitting in with other musicians, showing up at clubs, and playing wherever they would "let us."
