Later era Dead songs you prefer to early era

Forums:

Jack Straw: I find a lot of 70s versions boring but there's nothing like an up-tempo one, a rollicking jam then Brent coming in for the last verse. I'd also wager that Brent revitalized Cassidy and Let It Grow. I love LIG but Christ a 1974 Weather Report > LIG could put one to sleep.

Ship of Fools: Jerry clearly loved this song and would perk up for it, even just for one verse from 87-90. And hot take: Stella Blue was also better in those years. If nothing else for when Jerry flipped the switch on Tiger for the solo. That tone would make the hair on your arms stand up.

87 > 90

Ramble On Rose

FLA Stranger

Let It Grow

Brent n Jer !!@!@!!@!!!!!!! Dan Healy might of had a little sumthin to do with this

Shakedown (79-82 vs 89-90)

Cassidy

Sometimes Wharf Rat

Cold Rain & Snow... not  a big fan of the fast 60's version with the calliope keyboards. Minglewood Blues, same thing.

I'll take almost any Morning Dew from 79 thru 89 as opposed to the early 70's. -- Ditto for Cold Rain.

Sometimes I think I might be listening to too much GD and not expanding my musical tastes, but you guys analyzing this are in another realm.

I just went to the shows and got a buzz on hoping for something new and fresh. For example, was really "Sugar Magged-out" by the mid 80's.

I am sure there are others

The question seems a bit ambiguous;  I'm thinking latter-era tunes like "Picasso Moon" or "Lazy River Road".

Others are describing '90's version of 1970's GD tunes.

"Wave To The Wind" is one that never quite gelled for my ears, but perhaps it just needed more time.

I get what you're saying Earl. In real time I was like you, and I was also Sugar Magged out by 1990.

Seeing as we have access to so many recordings now, we have the luxury of asking and answering silly questions like this.

I'd like to add Estimated to the list.

JGB Deals from 89. That shit was fire.

I guess I'm one of the few (or the one) who has always preferred the slower version of They Love Each Other to the original up-tempo version.

I get the love for the original tempo, I like it too, but the slower version allows for such a beautiful, gentle, easy flow, and the lyrics are allowed so much more articulation, especially when Jerry could still really sing.

I always loved a slow version TLEO early in the 1st set.

Especially when Jerry could still really sing.

Brown Eyed Women and Cumberland Blues definitely got more amped-up as the years progressed.

Luv 80's China Doll's and Comes a Time's.

Morning Dew 87(and 6/18/83!)

Stella Blue 94

Dancin' in the Streets (77 > 70)

I can't think of one GD single song I would choose to go put on a 90's version of, unless it was a 90's only song of course.

that 3/18/88 is my favorite Brown Eyed Women though, so maybe that's one

I think that Black Muddy River & Victim are top notch tunes.

When the played an amazing late era Help > Slip > FT.
