So my son grew up being dragged to hippie fests and jam band concerts since he was a few weeks old. He was into it until he hit 13 and then the last thing in the world he wanted to do was be seen at another hippie fest or GD style concert with his parents. Instead, he got into Linkin Park, rap, and indie rock.
Fast forward 10 years and he is raving about the Umphrey's show he saw on Halloween (the Police show) and going to see the Infamous String Dusters tonight. It all seems to work out in the end.

Well, Driving home this
Well, Driving home this evening my five year old said “ hey dad can you play listen to the river sing sweet songs”?
Small victories to keep dad proud....
So I played 6/25/95 rfk and its great and final brokedown palace
Forgot how good that show was, Hornsby was much better as a return guest then during his extended stay

I was at Linkin Parks first
Ken I was at Linkin Parks first MSG show with my daughter who just turned 15 in Feb. 2008. Was pretty good and Jay-Z showed up at the end for a few songs. I have a soundboard of it they were selling there. If your kid wants a copy I could send you. Otherwise it's on Youtube.

ive gone thru tons of
ive gone thru tons of different music phases. i listened to popular rap when i was a kid in the early 2000's, like eminem and dr dre, a few years later i hated rap and listened to classic metal like metallica and slayer. a year or so later i was listening to mostly black metal/death metal like dimmu borgir. the next year i was on to classic goth rock like christian death, bauhaus, and related post punk acts like joy division. then moved on to indie rock and emo and alt hip hop like the classic def jux material, then went more into weird/psychedelic folk, then someone took me to a dead show and gave me acid.
i realized the other day a HUGE amount of the kind of music im drawn to today has its roots in a single song i loved when i was 5. im constantly after things that are dark, intense, angry, discordant, disturbing, surreal, etc. the dark portions of GD improvisations are my favorite part by a longshot.
when i was 5 my dad played me a cassette of the doors greatest hits. this greatest hits collection had the song "not to touch the earth" and i thought it was cool cause it was scary and he talks about the lizard king. its the first song i have a memory of ever listening to, knowing the words to, or enjoying in any way. i dont remember any kids songs or disney numbers. only "not to touch the earth".
listening to it again today, its absolutely mindblowing how much of all the different kinds of music i listen to has these certian qualities and this specific kind of sound that can all connect back to "not to touch the earth". this one song i fell in love with when i was 5 was the architect of the entire spectrum of my musical tastes throughtout the next 25 years of my life.
