Junior Marvin & the Wailers

Forums:

Junior Marvin & the Wailers was a blast of a reggae time last night at Tanner Park in Copiague, Long Island.

Love as a vibe was articulated in the rendition of Bob Marley's best songs - as well as some of Junior's originals.

This was JR Marvin's "Wailers", not his other band, "The Original Wailers", who are also touring this summer; that has the busy Al Anderson on guitar.

JR Marvin's band features:  JUNIOR MARVIN Guitar/Vocals -  SIMONE GORDON - Vocals

Bob Marley left Jamaica after his assignation attempt for London to work on Exodus & Kaya with the help of Junior Marvin on guitar and vocals

JR owns all the licks on songs like Exodus and Waiting in Vain (for your love). All of Bob's later stuff.

It was great little concert, where every Bob Marley song was played so well. Junior & Simone's vocals were spot on.

The encores were: Redemption Song, and War.

Here is Tanner Park. (Blue Öyster Cult plays here on August, 4th, for free as well)

assignation?

Opps, Thank you LiquidMonkey. I meat "assassination".

As in I assassinated this review.

Here is  a great video from the "Orginal Wailers" filmed a few weeks ago.

The original Wailers will out here Friday night at the Great South Bay Music Festival

It appears Jr. Marvin is in both bands

Nice review and pictures, man, but the guy's name is Junior Murvin, not Marvin. It's actually his first name.  He was named Murvin Junior Smith at birth.

Julian "JR" Marvin

Here is his website:

http://www.juniormarvinswailers.com/

http://www.juniormarvinswailers.com/bio/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junior_Marvin

Bob Marley's real name is Robert Nesta Marley

Peter Tosh's real name is Winston Hubert McIntosh.

File these records where you like, man.

Where did you get Murvin? His formal first name is Donald.

Birth name is  Donald Hanson Marvin Kerr Richards Jr.

It's a Reggae thread, there will be mistakes. I'll try harder.

My new friend who runs these concerts makes these really nice T-Dyes. (I am back there for BOC 8/4, she's making some more up)

I am offering 3 free T-Dye t-shirts to the first 3 folks that post here.

One between now & 12pm, and the other 2 after 12pm so some west costers can post.

I'll bump this thread before the end of July to get the sizes, mailing addys, and whether you prefer aqua blue or a rainbow swirl.

First thanks for sharing Odysseus. It is appreciated.

Seen both "The wailers" and "The Original Wailers" many times. Can not tell from your picture if Ashton Barrett was still with the band - "The Wailers". Though in Jan it was a special show with the members listed below. Many of the original wailers from bob Marley times were in the band. This show was special with 2 guitar attack of Donald K. and Junior Marvin. Good stuff.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is a video I took in Jan, 2017 with "the Wailers":

  Band:

  Ashton Barrett: Bass
  Ashton Barrett Jr: Drums
  Josh Barrett: Lead Vocals
Junior Marvin Guitar: vocals and Lead Guitar
  Tyrone Downe: Keyboards
  Donald Kinsey: Lead Guitar
Shema Mcgregor: Backup Vocals (daugther of Judy Mowat (I-Threes) and her father is reggae legend Freddie McGregor)
  Other back singer: ?

This was a special show and was wondering if they are still touring with the members above?

Hi Patrick - Thanks for the video here and the others recordings you have done!

Great video!

Good Morning Bart!

I see that Tommy Emmanuel is playing at that fest. I am seeing him in August for the first time

I guess I am going to see the Wailers too Friday. They are the only act I like that night, but JR Wailers last Friday was a free one.

{What size T-shirts?}

My bad, Bluesnote, Junior Murvin, composer of Police & Thieves, was a different person altogether.  I always thought they were the same guy, but I was wrong.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junior_Murvin

My apologies.

I thought it was Aston, not Ashton.

That's ok Dave!

Ha haha Surfdead!

Tye Dye T-shirt sizes folks?

Good Morning Bluelight. Tommy Emmanuel is fantastic, he plays here often, I never miss his shows he is a big favorite of world fest. I think this might be his 5th time playing it.

You might enjoy some of these pictures my friend John does. I have help set up most of these bands through the years. John also produces World Fest and is Achilles Wheel's manager. Grass Valley gets all the good shows wink

Those are great! Thanks man.

Junior Marvin did start touring with Al Anderson in "The Original Wailers" a few years ago but then went back to the [original] Wailers, I believe.  So it's just Al Anderson in the OW anymore.  Not a bad little reggae show, though.

It's Junior Murvin.  Javaless Dave is correct.

No. We are talking about Bob Marley's friend and guitar player, JR Marvin, as the link up there states.

Not the reggae singer Junior Murvin

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junior_Murvin

Two different people. One is legendary, one, not so much.

Sorry did not get Aston name right.

One reason I asked who was in the band. Is the band change lineups from time to time?

Seen different lineups in both "the wailers" and "The Original wailers". Both bands put on a good show.

==============================================================================================

Short story about the wailers:

I sent them an email asking if I could "open tape" them around 2015 about 2 weeks before the show. I asked nicely about recording and said feel free to contact me and left my email and tel #..

Well after 2 weeks it was finally show night and they were playing boulder that night and the next night in denver. The wailiers had not gotten back to me about taping and I

had my low profile rig ready and was about to go out the door to attend the show. Well my wife says you have a phone call from CA

and its the wailers on the phone. I said to my wife stop kidding I need to go to the show., She said it is the wailers on the phone.

So I go to the phone and there is a women with a heavy jamician accent and she goes we would like you to record the show. Do you need tics for the boulder

or denver show? The wailers camp wanted copies of the show if I recorded them.

I was like WOW. Had to rip apart my low profile rig and put together the open taping rig in about 5 minutes so I could get to the show before doors opened.

Get to the show the wailers allow me to set up in back of SBD and were very nice to me.

The wailers sent me a CA address to send the show to. I sent them a package with a DVD with the audio files and never heard back.

Though recently the wailers have said they are more open to taping due to the improvements in audio software and it is now a promotion for them.

Good Stuff.

Have a "The Original Wailers" story too if zoners are interested....

I shall represent for a "L" size shirt, East Coast, aqua is preference and 'rainbow' is OK too.

A nice Zoner invited me out to see "The Wailers" a couple years back,  over in New Hope Pa.  Actually he was pals with band/promoters and threw a general Zoner invite out there.  I'm recollecting it was 'Havana' venue in New Hope Pa.

They played a great set or two, and it was nice to check in with roots to the source.  Great lead Guitarist,  Bass dude was a bit ADA with mobility issues, I think, but absolutely on top of the Rhythm section Bass riffs.

Could not name names as to band members,  but definitely "The Wailers".

It was a couple years back,  I'm thinking pre - Dog era, so maybe 2-3 years ago.

Thinking back,

saw 'The Original Wailers'  at some very laid-back outdoor venue at a Botanical Garden between Portland and Salem, OR back when.

Might have been 'Silverton' and they only had shows there a short while.  Probably 1993->1994 to my recollection.

I remember touring the Arboretum grounds and observing the Nice Trees & Plants.  Think we pitched a tent under some foliage post-show, and split in the Morning.

Might have been under the Brewers Spruce   with its low-hanging branches.

You got an Aqua Blue in Large Stu. (Flashbacks gets XXL or better)

Awesome stories. Patrick write the other Original Wailer story later. What size T-shirt are you?

I tape local reggae bands who open for many big reggae headliners. One local band was opening for the "The Original Wailers" (TOW) and I got the Ok to record the local band. This was a cancer benefit led by coach Karl from the Nuggets. The local hospital people were there and some of them played instruments. This show cost like 50 dollars which is high for a reggae show though it was a benefit for cancer. Well not that many people came due to the $50 tics.

Get there early and set up my rig next to the SBD. This show is outdoors and they have a really nice sound system. The hill was sloped and a great spot to record and SBD man ok's me recording the local band. The original wailers do a sound check and I take my camera and start shooting pics of them. Well someone in TOW thought I was the photographer and let me into the area right in front of the band and I start taking many photos. Al Anderson and Junior Marvin were on stage and taking as many photos as I can. They let me go backstage and take photos also. Said hello to many in TOW though did not get to talk to any of them...

Well I go back to my rig and the local band plays. Then the wailers come on and the SBD man says to me: "Did you get permission to record TOW?"

I was honest and said no. Was not sure what was going to happen next. Would he ask me to take down my gear...

SBD man says: "I was a taper and got lots of recordings that were not authorized and you are on your own and if TOW ask me I will tell them I did not allow you to record them". I was like fine. Well one of TOW posse is next to the SBD most of the night and never says anything to me. I was very nervous thoughout the set that he would tap me on the shoulder and say what are you doing...Did someone ok you to record...

The encore was exodus and they have many Dr on stage playing instruments with coach Karl from the nuggets on stage dancing with them and this was special. This was quite the jam and unfortunately my batteries ran out and I only got the beginning of the song. Never released the show or video or pics due to did not want the band to know the show got recorded though the recording came out great.

======================================================================

If pre-shrunk large if not XL. Thank you!!!

If you have to call yourselves the "Original" something's amiss

i caught Al Anderson's Original Wailers and Family Man's The Wailers weeks apart

I wouldn't return to see Al's guitar show again.

The Wailers are solid and brought all the love

do not get the two confused.

The band is called the "Wailers", not the original Wailers. I called it the OW (JR calls it that), so as to confuse any. I was wrong, sorry

http://www.thewailers.net/

Update:

Al Anderson is no longer in the Wailers, and JR is the guitar player in both bands now. It's like GD vs. JGB, both bands have the same GREAT guitar player.

But like Phil & Friends, anyone can show up.

-----

Patrick, I will get you an XL, they are not pre-shrunk.

i'm totally confused

There are 2 bands -  "The wailers" and "The Original Wailers".

=============================================

1) Aston Barrett is the leader of the band - "The Wailers"

https://www.thewailers.net/the-band/

=============================================

2) Al Anderson is the leader of the band - "The Original Wailers"

==============================================

In Jan or so of 2017 they did a "Reunion tour of many of the members of the band that had played with bob Marley over the years "

Aston Barrett: Bass (Original Member of BMW)
  Aston Barrett Jr: Drums
  Josh Barrett: Lead Vocals
Junior Marvin: vocals and Lead Guitar (Original Member of BMW)
Tyrone Downe: Keyboards (Original Member of BMW)
Donald Kinsey: Lead Guitar (Original Member of BMW)
Shema Mcgregor: Backup Vocals (daughter of Judy Mowat (I-Threes) and her father is reggae legend Freddie McGregor)
  Other back singer: ?

====================================================================================

There are 2 reggae singers with a similar name that has been used above:

1) Junior Marvin played lead guitar and sung back up vocals for BMW.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junior_Marvin

2) Then there is reggae singer Junior Murvin, not to be confused with Junior Marvin above.

Hope that helps turtle...

JR Marvin & the Wailers vs the Wailers.

JR's band (JR Marvin's Wailers) are tight, and he sings in the vocal range of Bob Marly. This band has younger players. It's his band like JGB was Jerry's.

The Wailers have Aston and his son in the band. Josh Barret on vocals (he embraces Bob well), Don Kinsey on guitar, JR on guitar only, and some of the same back round singers in JR's band are in the Wailers.

The Wailers are a democratic band, and all are equal. JR fronts his band "JR Marvin's Wailers"

Voodoo Chile - Fine if you think so. What are you proving. I gave you the most up to date information. If you are not into it, pass on it.

Whe you get a chance, post about what bands you are into.

Patrick, back-round singer Hasanah now sings in the Wailers, not in JR's band.

thanks

I'm admitting to be a corpse humper in the case of these Wailer bands. They both have the proper elements to pull it off live.

I was the mix-down recording engineer on Dennis Brown's "Inseparable" , recorded at D&D Recording Studio, NYC (1987)

I was hired by producer Willie Lindo. We got very stoned, and did the re-mix in an hour.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VE_oJvDMtv4

 Chill bluelight,

I just provided links to the three bands, to clear up some confusion.

Ive seen two of the three and would go see The Wailers in heartbeat

The Originals (with the Tuff Gong seal of approval) not so.

i was being cheeky with the term "corpse humper"

it is thrown around here quite a bit in regards to Dead cover bands cashing in on Jerry's legacy.

Legacy, a good name for a compilation album

Sorry man. {I am not felling up to par today}. Very sorry about that.

It's all irie mon cool

You're a good mon!

What size Tye-Dye T- shirt are you being in?

some good people up in this thread.

===========================================================

Odysseus that is what I thought was really special about the show. Most reggae band do not have 2 lead guitars. The one two punch of these guys was the closest I have seen to Jam music from a reggae band. It almost like they lock into this heavy reggae backbone with drums and bass and overlay with these guitar tones that approach real jamming. They have wah wah pedals and even bend notes which is not typical for reggae guitar. Donald K and Junior just sort of playing off each other and they look to be having fun. That video I posted above shows some of it.Around 4 minutes into the video you see Junior almost jumping up and down he is so into it.  The Jan wailers show I saw was very special. GOOD STUFF.

 >>>>>back-round singer Hasanah

Uh, it's background.

As opposed to foreground.

hahah.

I hope your kidding. I would stay FAR away from what I post and my threads, if you are expecting perfect spelling and grammar.

Well put Patrick. Thanks man.

Looks like this BOC concert is going down this Friday; and I'll be there to pick up the Tye Dyes.

I have the sizes, but I need the addresses from Bart, Patrick, and Stu to mail them out.

You guys can email me your addresses to [email protected]

I'll be replying from my home email.

Thanks for playing!

Joe

Email sent Joe. Thank you!

Appreciate it.

Saw the "Wailers" on Friday night at Revolution Hall.  It was bassist Aston "Family Man" Barrett's band, but Jr. Marvin was there on guitar too. Played a nice mix of the predictable Bob Marley greatest hits and some of his more heavy, political tunes. Family Man has recruited a couple of his 41 children to fill in the band, including the singer who looked like Bob, except a bit taller, and had the whole shtick down with all the Marley mannerisms, dread swinging, dancing about, etc.  It was sort of like the DSO of Bob Marley and the Wailers.   Revolution Hall remains my favorite new indoor venue.

Wailers.jpg

Great review & photograph, Ken. Especially of Don Kinsey on that Gibson SG.

Love these guys.

Patrick, I got your email & I'll mail out the Tye-Dye tomorrow.

I'm just waiting on Stu's & Bart's mailing address.
