JRAD West Coast Run

Forums:

Who will we see at the Oakland shows besides Roshambo?

LA shows at the Wiltern begin tomorrow!

We are on the road south tomorrow...taking extra time to drive to the bay, with some hot tub spots along the way.

I'll be there

Two Fox shows for me. Chose not to go to LA this year.

Mad Alchemy will be doing their liquid light show!

I will be going to the 2 LA shows.

I have 2 extras for sale for JRAD at the Wiltern on Friday: Mezz Row A seats 101 and 103. Cost, of course. Anyone need these?

Good to hear about that light show!

I've never been to any shows in LA, not going to begin now..(said the native SF girl)   ;)

I'll be there on Sunday.

NOVEMBER, 2018:
Thursday, November 8, 2018: The Wiltern - Los Angeles, CA
Friday, November 9, 2018: The Wiltern - Los Angeles, CA
Saturday, November 10, 2018: Fox Theater - Oakland, CA
Sunday, November 11, 2018: Fox Theater - Oakland, CA

have fun westies ! remember to hydrate properly and often ! shake your bones !

i picked up a last minute gig in SF and i get in around 2 pm sat !! - are there tix still available ?

Tix available for Sunday, I believe.

See you foxes in Oaktown, bringing the dancing shoes.

just fyi on the 9th there is a free art show in SF at a place called mirus gallery showing art by a guy who calls himself nychos and does these really crazy psychedelic drawings of dissected and translucent people and animals. very dark, slightly cartoony and really inventive. i havent been down to the bay in awhile and its pretty convenient that this fits in the day before the fox run starts.

wish i could have made it down to LA, but it seems like the band holds their yearly fox shows in high esteem, many of their longest and hardest hitting sets are from the fox, lots of bustouts, the year they played with bob, etc...this is their first two night stand at the fox and it only stands to reason they will once again try to dish up something special.

See you freaks at the Fox!

See you foxes at The Freak!

in for the 2 Fox shows.   first time seeing Jrad

we have an extra GA for each nite if anyone is looking

Tonight should be a barn burner.

Remember to hydrate hydrate hydrate, shake your bones !

The Wiltern is such a beautiful theater. Love that venue!

11/9 on da toobs, as well.

Cranking on the big speakers presently.

last night was probably the weakest fox show the band has done yet, although it was still stellar and better than any other offerings from the core 4 in recent memory. even the weakest JRAD shows still have a wealth of great moments, high energy levels and great playing...i guess what was missing was some of the creativity ive come to expect, and some of the more overt noise thats come to define their improv style.

and on a mostly unrelated note, i think im done with floor tickets at big drugband shows for good. how can you enjoy a show like that??? people constantly pushing their way thru the crowd, spilling beer, being loud and smelly, stupid balloons filled with glowsticks hitting you in the face, desperate wooks vying for your attention with silly faces and high fives, its so distracting! since furthur stopped touring i only go to one or two big venue drugband shows per year, and usually i'll dose and want a seat..but this time since we got 2 nights i thought it would be great to get down to the floor and get up close to the band and boogie...what a mistake. things like DNB tend to still be a good time on the floor, mostly because everyone knows each other, but christ!

i dont understand where everybody is going! every few minutes someone else is pushing thru the crowd...there is only one stage, one band, and its behind you! where is everybody going??? every direction all night, like mice crawling thru a wall...just stand there and watch the music where are you fucking going???

Lol

are exclamation points displaying as solid lines for everyone or just me? when i first post them it is the normal exclamation point and after a second or two it changes to one solid line

!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you, daylight! I thought it was because I’m too old for the floor, but you’re a lot younger than I am!

Even in seats you have to let people out constantly. I think - Didn’t you just go to pee? Didn’t you just get more beer? And they always say “Sorry - this is the last time.” Guess I’m getting too old for this.

And exclamation marks are just exclamation marks for me.

My Fox floor experience was fantastic last night, dead center, four people back. Grate neighbors and only one crasher the whole night. The level of chatter was quite reasonable.

As for the music, I thought it was f’ng amazing start to finish. As satisfying as any JRAD show I’ve been to.

I’m almost too old for this, but what a night!

Last night was another solid performance by JRAD.  Felt like the mix on the right side of the floor was a bit off.  They needed to turn up the volume in the first set, second set was better.   Still think the band overplays at times but I guess that's partially their thing.  Subtlety and nuance is not really in the JRAD toolbox at this point.  Marco is really good and got the largest applause IMO.

I am also with Daylight on the floor thing.  WTF.  I don't remember the floor at the Fox being that crowded and the constant moving...   I mean, I like a midset brew as well but it shouldn't be that hard.  Swapping out my floors for center loge tonight.  Will give that a try.

Definitely good times regardless!!!

Rando, if you want to swap your floors for my center loge let me know.

Dan, I picked up some center loges already for tonight but have a pair of floors if you would like them.

Email is above in thread...

> as solid lines for everyone or just me?

Straight lines without glasses, exclamation points with glasses for me LOL!

I was going to go for the drink rail but I think I will retreat to the comfort and safety of the Telegraph room viewing area I have tickets for and blow off hanging out with friends LOL!

Did the first drink rail and the crowd was fine. The band totally smoked. The usual high energy “Camaro” Dead. First set was an hour of Terrapin>Other One>Terrapin Flyer. Set 2 rocked with Good Lovin’>Viola Lee Blues>Shakedown Street>Let It Grow>Morning Dew.

last night was absolutely nuts. just insane, totally over the top and super creative.

much of the music last night, especially the first set and around viola, was so harsh and unrelentingly noisy i could see it turning some folks off. its a style they get into at some of their shows that ive come to think of as "naked city dead", and IMO thats where they are at their best, is exploring the sounds of NYC improv and grinding guitar noise/feedback in a dead format.

last night might have been their best fox show to date. straight up nuts.

But did you like it long balls?

Glad they got off and were more enjoyable last night

I wonder if the fire marshal was it all engaged on Saturday there's no way that was a legal capacity nor safe

"Camaro" Dead<<

LOL

Bad dude . . . bad car.

Last night was smokin' good.

And of course it was legal capacity on Saturday, but it was a rock 'n roll concert and people tend to pack it in at those deals, but the one really good thing about that venue is with just a little thought & effort it's pretty easy to find places that allow for space & room. You just have to poke around.

And it's never "safe" at any sold out or even remotely crowded large event.

If "safety" is what one seeks then it's best to just stay locked in at home and complain about the world on the internet.

Nugs.tv

OK Lantz I have to push back and I'm very comfortable disagreeing with your assertions

( and imo I understand that you're generally pro venue and promoter) it may well have been legal but I am suspicious

I did not think it was safe Saturday night it was near impossible to move around and I'm not exactly a novice in that area

I'm very comfortable disagreeing with your assertions I did not think it was safe Saturday night

it is true that I just gotten back from Mexico having 11 teeth pulled and 16 implants placed and I was pretty fucking low energy wiped out physically and also depressed emotionally for multiple reasons

that may have influenced my capacity and impressions / experience

And nuance is definitely lacking and I hate when people talk constantly. I don't love hat venue / no big and yes there a lot of old school staff folks

Loved Saturday night didn’t make it on Sunday. This is my favorite flavor of dead music these days, I even brought three casual dead music fans and they all loved it. I was on the floor again and had problems down there before, but Saturday night I was right in front of the sound board and had nice defensible space. Did have to explain to the inevitable back steppers that I had no where to go. Funny how they back step into my wife but when I change places with her,  and they have to back step into sweaty me,  somehow they find  a little extra room in front of them.

But yeah the floor was tight on Saturday. I love the energy of the floor, and will continue there as long as I can. I just feel disconnected from a show up in the balcony. The spontaneous crowd sing along to the Living for the City tease was one of those floor things that makes it worthwhile.

Took my wife last night, her first time seeing JRAD.  She saw a lot of GD and loves Jerry FWIW.

She didn't like last night.  She thought it was "angry" and lacked any semblance of touch.  She also couldn't stand T-Ham's singing.

I actually preferred last night over Sat and thought the post Other One section of set 1 was incredible.  The Shakedown/Viola transitions were a bit clunky as normal but expected for those who overplay.

Also... the loge was empty and luxurious.  I may be permanently changed unless I have a head full of steam.  A full head is likely the only way I may battle that GA floor anymore.

Nice mtg some of y'all.

Terrapin>Other One.....say what....

Guess that's why I don't really like them.

I'm more into the flow, the clean, the nuance, the beautiful.

I was born in NY and have spent the rest of my life trying to escape New York-ism.

im sure thats a pretty common sentiment. before i started listening to the dead, i was more into punk, metal and david lynch films than classic rock, and for me an integral part of psychedelia is pushing the limits of what you feel comfortable with, and exploring your own darkness and inner violence. JRAD at times can be a soundtrack for that no doubt.

Where are the tapes?

Reviving this thread!

Friday August 16 at LA Greek and Saturday August 17 at Frost ... who's going?!

I've had tix for the Frost for months, but we just decided we can also do Greek! First time at that venue. Any seating tips? Any lodgng recommendations? I found (but have not booked yet) a cheap AirBnB in Los Feliz for $100 (also walking distance?) but I see others for around the same price in the hills to the west of the theatre.

JRAD Is “opening” for the stones

alpine inn pre frost

It portends to be a good weekend round these parts!

The Frost for me for sure. I expect a bunch of Stones teases...

@Love Matters > Alpine shows that it's closed for remodeling... where are the details, please?

Need clarification, please: Was studying seating chart for Greek on Tickemaster site. Pit says "unreserved standing room" ... does this mean if we buy a reserved ticket in a cheaper section, we can still go down to the pit?

Hey, Llollo! In the LA Greek the pit is accessible only with pit tickets. It is standing only for this show (sometimes they put folding chairs in the pit). You will want to be in pit or Section A, and not too far to the sides in A.

The venue is great for tailgating - it is in Griffith Park. The parking is stacked so you won’t be getting out too soon after the show.

I will be there - hope to see you!

Zooey to the rescue, yay!   Thanks for this key info....  Not seeing any PIT tickets right now but will look for some on Cash or Trade.

We will take shuttle to show (not roadtripping after all), but will try to find you in tailgating area....what kind of car will you have there... or do you do the sun shelter / flag thing?

38729B28-8709-43F5-BDEE-00C648249E31.jpeg

Here is a photo of the pit soon after doors opened for a Ryan Adams show. It is a small area with an usher guarding the entrance.

i don’t know where I will park and I have no flag - probably texting will work best! I’ll send you my number on FB messenger.

Sounds good, thanks!  That's a tiny PIT -- That will be a miracle if I find PIT tix.

Alpine update: I cruised over there two days ago  to take my 59 out

the sign says opening the  end of July but the worker said August 7 is the opening so I would count on the 14th

It looks absolutely stunning!!!   The owners are definitely honoring the history of the historic place.

they added a woodfired pizza oven in an old truck,  they mounted the old table tops on the wall,  they added a new kitchen/bar in the backyard and upgraded the bar,  they added some bean toss games honoring the pac 8,10,12

I would guess they easily spent $2 million  plus  After buying it for over 3 million plus

photos following

I was forced to eat at the dutch goose LOL

So no secret JRAD show @ Alpine, sounds like?  That is so cool they are renovating the place.

i was verklempt --- for a number of reasons..............

....and that 59 car is a sweet ride!

Heads up! For the August 16 LA Greek show, Ticketbastard just released pit tickets for face.

Update: Pit tickets are gone, but keep checking back. I found the seats I wanted around 6pm today...and they weren't available at 5...

1) Pit tix available again for $175 each...

2) Where do Zoners go to pre-func before a LA Greek show?

$175 to see a gd cover band?

tough to stomach, i am seeing an original musician tonight for $20.

>>>>$175 to see a gd cover band?

that can’t be right

did everyone else get some kind of big raise that I missed out on

Yep! Totally agree. We found great seats for face value, feel very fortunate.

Of course these are Ticketmaster scalper prices.... the pits the other day were going for face.

What is actual original face value for the pit tix

as far as pre-game...i don't think there's much like adjacent to the venue.

you can tail gate/ picnic/drink in the park there though before the show.

@Bucky > $42.50 + fees!  F'n Ticketbastard.

@Turtle  > figured as much... already know where Zooey will be parked. ;)

...and found an interesting historic Hollywood dive lounge on our route to the show: http://www.thedresden.com

its sold out?

i've heard of dresden but don't think i've been

Love it that they sold out Red Rocks --

Tickets left for LA Greek are mostly on the side terraces or way up on the upper C tier.

>>>Love it that they sold out Red Rocks --

How long before Dead Co replace Bill and Mickey with Russo. Although my theory is that JRAD tempos are in direct response to Joe's years in Further.

Has there every been another band that had to deal with this much competition from competing cover bands?

LA vs Palo Alto

Who gets Stagger and who gets Esau?

DSO sells out Red Rocks too.

Controversial take: Colorado folks like the Grateful Dead.

Cool!

ran into zooey before the show.

it was a smoke fest inside, never seen the greek so lax about it.

do you guys want my opinion now? :)

dude from fruit bats was on sax all night which i thought added quite a bit.

dancing is one of my favorite tunes, i did not really like the treatment. was almost unrecognizable.

same for eyes...

i see why slacker is not down with the t-ham dude.

all in all it was OK.

i thought the best played songs were the sailor/saint combo.

russo of course was terrific.

then at the end he did some soccer dad rap...kinda weird.

we had fun and the 16yr old kid enjoyed himself.

i probably wouldn't pay to go see them again. would rather see dso , but that's my humble opinion :)

people like grateful dead music.

it was a very nice mild day and night in LA.

That monster Let It Grow sandwich looks good on paper. I was wondering who the saxophone player was, I never heard of the fruit bats.

The horn player was Stuart Bogie, he's sat in w JRAD several times.
Eric D. Johnson is Fruit Bats. He sat in w JRAD at least once before. He runs the Hiuchica festival every year in Sonoma.

Hey Zoners!

I was hoping to attend tonight's gig,  but it didn't happen.

Any good streams out there?

I just started listening to: http://mixlr.com/itsup2u/

I need a miracle (Looks like they started with Jack Straw)

Just tuned in to the stream at the end of St. Stephen. It sounds good, I'm feeling better from my recent physical woes and I started getting a bug to maybe head over there and see if I could get in at set break, but now I hear that a  sax player hooting along with them again.

Meh.

Unless the player is truly amazing, sax in GD music has always been superfluous for me, especially in a busy band like JRAD, and this guy isn't truly amazing.

I suppose it's better for me to stay home with ice in my lap anyway.

^I was thinking the same thing, especially with the flute during China Cat (I got a little chuckle remembering the last woodwinds I heard at the Frost: via midis from Jerry and Brent).

Great music for cleaning up the house!

I'm not gonna' make the effort, but it's going be beautiful there with the sun going down, and it should be pretty wild in that place under the lights. Too bad for me.

Next time.

hope you feel better buddy

Thanks Turtle.

I'm fine, I just fucked myself up trying to do too much. A classic move for a fool my age, but it's healing and I'll be back to my normal level of goofing off very soon.

And maybe it's because I'm listening to a stream, but this sax player is coming across as a wanker.

Thx for the link Johnny.  I had a social commitment tonight in the east bay and didn't make the drive down.

So the audio for the second set has been great.  Good tunes and the Viola is always fun.  Whole second set sounds like a rager.  That segue into Mission was clunky but also reset the expectation for the set. I like it. Garcias.

Elvis!

He passed 42 years ago yesterday.

Nice cover.

Thanks for the video post. It looks like the Frost, except because of the new evening showtime the sun isn't beating down mercilessly on everybody as it used to. That has the best change to that venue.

I'm curious to hear what Daylight thought of the show/s. He's a thoughtful guy and he loves this band.

Jack Straw sounded great. Looks like an awesome time with the sun going down with the eucalyptus trees in the back drop.

But agree with ol lance, horns have no place in GD music, especially in Jrad.

JRAD was fantastic. Love the variety of musical styles and the innovative jams. The show was EPIC, seriously EPIC

Looking forward to checking out Ghost Light w/ Tom Hamilton. I gave it on good authority that they were the String Summit highlight

https://www.ghostlightband.com/

lance - i thought the show was great as always. not quite as epic as most of the fox shows they have done IMO. the fox shows always seem like they go the extra mile to make it a special event, whereas the playing here was more standard JRAD - still super on point, inventive, dark and exploratory, but not really reaching the levels of last years first set at the fox where they laid into a 1hr+ set consisting only of terrapin>other one>terrapin, complete with vast swaths of NYC style experimental noise. they did not get very noisy at the frost, which is a disappointment for me as IMO JRAd is at their best when they are marrying the experimental NYC scene they came up listening to with the GD concert experience.

throwing stones was a highlight, im a big metzger fan and things got really intense part ways thru that song...scott has really great chemistry with joe when he is singing tunes that have alot of rhythm in the cadence of the vocals, like throwing stones or the elvis see see rider, which was also a real treat.

mission + standing on the moon was a little heavy on the t-ham jerry ballad side of things. i enjoy them, but one per show is plenty for me. standing could have been traded out for more standard high intensity JRAD style playing and the set would have been better for it IMO.

as always the variety of musical styles they touch on is wider than just about any band playing GD music, including the GD themselves. now of course im not saying JRAD is better, or comparable to the GD, but they incorporate modern styles that jerry and the GD simply could not have done, having stopped playing shows in 95. metal, punk, post rock, zorn style experimental jazz, electronic, and ambient music are all present in addition to the standard GD melange of funk, jazz, bluegrass, country rock, and blues.

cumberland and viola were  highlights as well.

venue had lots of open space...the way the lawn is set up lends itself to people putting down blankets onm the grass ampitheater "steps" and  people look for areas that are 100% open the whole width of the step, which leaves tons of open space all over the place as people pass over areas where others have set down blankets, but left lots of free space in between their blanket and the next one over.

sound at the middle and back of the venue was absurdly bad. things kept getting muffled and losing volume/dynamics, vocals were muddy, i was getting worried. closer to the stage the sound got much, much better.

not a fan of the metal detector + no vape pen/ecig rule. i ended up getting the security ladies all flustered by acting like a halfwit jackass and snuck it by in the confusion, but if they intend to host any more drug bands, it might be easier for all involved if that rule gets dropped. security at the entry gate was a shitshow.

good venue for tripping balls.

>>>sound at the middle and back of the venue was absurdly bad. things kept getting muffled and losing volume/dynamics<<<

I was wondering about that. The sound was always my biggest issue with that venue, very flat and not loud or bright enough unless you were down close.

They're certain to have decibel restrictions, and the gradual slope doesn't help. Plus, it was pretty breezy in the south bay on Saturday, which never helps, especially if the sound isn't blasted.

Thanks for the review daylight. It sounds like everybody who went is glad they did.

Far out.

I watched the Curb Your Enthusiasm "Long Balls" episode for the first time last night.

Hope you've entered the No-Fly Zone, Daylight :)
