Hmmm...

Interesting.  Something is brewing.

UhOh. Maybe SCI will scoot on over to to their lately more standard NYE run stop of Broomfield instead of Mission Ballroom. Hope all's well @ JRAD.

That is a rather unusual development.

maybe, just maybe, after years of touring and then being with family for the last couple of years they are taking a break and enjoying the holidays, i know for me things have changed my perspective of when i want to work and when i want to be home...i will end this year with 180 days on the road and just turned down a gig in Vegas that starts 12/26...

id imagine most reasonable artists would finish their prior engagements before making a choice like that. id guess most the JRAD guys are professional enough to either suck it up and finish their currently booked shows, or be aware enough of their emotions to have made this choice earlier and just not booked the shows if all they wanted was more time with their families. its not as if they are canceling a long string of dates or anything really significant. theys still got a bunch of other 2 or 3 night runs plus a show on halloween listed on their webpage that all seem to still be on. i guess its possible but idk.

besides, pretty much every member in that band has a stand in. they do shows minus one band member with a stand in from russo's brooklyn scene regularly. aside from maybe russo, the band can and has lost any of the other members, got a fill in, and played a killer show. maybe some kind of logistical issue or issue with the venue, or maybe a family emergency or temporary health issue for one of the bandmembers and its to late to get a proper replacement, or maybe in russos case dont want to get a replacement.

hopefully all is ok for those guys, but i do wonder if there was ever a need to find a stand in for russo like they have some of the other members, would they? fun to think about something like a john molo stand in, but that might be off the table based on the sheer absurdity of what the band name would need to be - JMAD? MOLRAD?

daylight, your post got me wondering what it might be like if Molo sat in, rather than stood in, with JRAD. I'd travel to see Molo and Russo sharing a stage.

>>i do wonder if there was ever a need to find a stand in for russo

His tech, along with an extra percussionist, played a few shows in 2019, when Joe's wife had their baby.

A poster on phish.net says it was because of low ticket sales.

"They only sold something like 650 tickets for their New year's run in Colorado. Venue holds 6,000. They are pulling the plug on the shows. My heart goes out to those stuck with flights and hotels."

I cannot confirm those numbers, but clearly the Denver market has a lot of NYE shows scheduled:
Lotus in Boulder
STS9 at Fillmore
SCI at Mission Ballroom
Decadence fest (Griz, etc)

Hey, LA has availability!

^^.....and there was probably still a hyped-up pre-sale with fake demand too

It doesn't make sense to go from a 6000 seat venue to a 9000 seat venue if ticket sales were slow but things might just be over saturated. Goose is playing 1st Bank in December. Bob and Wolf Pack in November. No shortage of jambands here. Also a lot of people just maxed out their cards for Deadco at Folsom.

Band don't cancel shows because of low ticket sales. They get their guarantee if they sell 6 or 6000. That's also why venues/promoters rarely cancel poorly sold shows, but just move them to smaller halls. It could be that there were no other available venues so the promoter negotiated a deal to pay less than the original guarantee, but that doesn't happen very often.

And Molo & Russo have played together, at Phil's 70th Bday show at the BG Civic. It was OK. I find Molo's playing to be a bit stiff for double-drumming.

who makes their NYE plans in september?...

Maybe like a lot of heads they are just getting sick of Dead cover bands :)

I'm more tired of all the pre-sales BS.

^^^^THIS^^^

JRAD in DC, The Anthem, Saturday, 11/12.

Not wanting to say I'm tired of Dead cover bands, sort of, but the thing over-saturated.

JRAD is not just a GD cover band though. They really bring their own thing to the music.

^^^^ Agree, MIKE-drop.   JRAD is not exactly in the same category as Dark Star Orchestra, for example.

I would take the Dark Star over JRad, I know I am in the minority.

"JRAD is not just a GD cover band though. They really bring their own thing to the music."  Yeah cringy vocals

JRAD is what I call Camaro Dead. Fast paced, high Octane.

> Yeah cringy vocals

This is vague, and completely subjective. Got anything more specific?

>>>>Got anything more specific?

Tom Hamilton (vocals)

Yeah, Hamilton's vocals are kind of high-pitched and nasal, but are they cringe? And Metzger's got a decent voice.

IME hamilton's vocals sound alot better live, and something about concert recording makes it sound extra nasaly and weird. his voice can be hit or miss, but generally they sound much better live.

for me, vocals are not the focus of dead music and are rarely a make it or break it kinda deal for me. TBH the only vocalist i can think off of the top of my head whose poor singing genuinely detracted from what would have otherwise been a great show is none other than phil fucking lesh. its a bit strange to hem and haw over the quality of vocals coming from folks like hamilton or haynes when we're all on a fan club message board dedicated to the guy who insists on singing eyes of the world as if he were a dying bear. even the songs hes done vocals on since the GD days are pretty rough. as long as the jams are good and someone besides phil is singing, im cool with it.

metzger rips it up every time. both his vocals and playing have an absolutely wonderful dark, powerful, angry energy to them. that kind of feeling and sound tends to be a recurring theme among much of my favorite music across all genres, and IMO that kind of feeling and sound at dead related shows often leads to some peak musical moments and improvisation. metzgers voice is perfect for bob songs and is perfect for bringing a little more edge to the table. he's not an extraordinary vocalist in the traditional sense, but his voice is totally perfect for what is required of him in JRAD. its hard for me to imagine anyone complaining about metzgers vocals.
