Donald Trump Jr. shoots guns from Utah company with ties to polygamous sect
President Donald Trump’s eldest son visited with a Utah gun-maker last week that has been under scrutiny for its ties to a $511 million biofuel fraud perpetrated by members of a polygamous sect.
Desert Tech has gained attention for its ties to the Davis County Cooperative Society, also known as the Latter-Day Church of Christ, the Kingston Group or The Order. The Southern Poverty Law Center has designated the sect, which includes members who practice polygamy, as a hate group.
Some former members of the church have called the sect a criminal enterprise that is inherently abusive to women and children. Some of those former members on Sunday criticized the sight of the U.S. president’s son promoting a company linked to the Kingston Group.
“It’s disgusting that any member of the Trump family is all smiles taking a photo with someone that is a member of this disgusting cult,” former Kingston Group member Melissa Ellis wrote in a text to The Salt Lake Tribune.
Shanell DeRieux, one of the stars of the reality television show “Escaping Polygamy,” said she wasn’t surprised to see a connection between members of the Kingston Group and the Trump family.
“It validates the well-known rumor that The Order leaders have friends in high places,” DeRieux said in a statement to The Tribune, “and suggests to me, that ‘the cries of a few women and children’ won’t be heard.”
A spokesman for the Davis County Cooperative Society has said it encourages its members to follow the law.
In 2019, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a notice it intended to seize the building Desert Tech occupies in West Valley City. The government alleges the building is among the real estate through which executives with Washakie Renewable Energy laundered money.
Washakie participated in a federal program that paid the company to manufacture biodiesel from products like used cooking grease or cornstalk. Washakie CEO Jacob Kingston and three members of his family have pleaded guilty to crimes in federal court and admitted they made little biofuel and instead falsified applications to the government to collect the federal subsidies.
A fifth person, California-bases businessman Lev Aslan Dermen, was convicted of 10 counts related to the scheme at a trial earlier this year in Salt Lake City. The pursuit of assets tied to the fraud remains pending.
Desert Tech leases its space from the building owner. A review of those ownership records showed the building belongs to a limited liability company for which Young was once listed as the manager. The LLC was transferred in 2016 to one of Young’s family members who had offices listed in another building prosecutors say was connected to the fraud.
Dermen’s attorney, Los Angeles lawyer Mark Geragos, at trial argued it was members of the Kingston family, and not his client, who pushed the fraud. Geragos said Sunday the photos of Trump Jr. with Desert Tech reinforced his view.
“It might go a long way in the selective prosecution in the Dermen case,” Geragos said.
Sentencing for all five defendants has been placed on hold until the coronavirus pandemic subsides.
After the Dermen verdict, U.S. Attorney for Utah John Huber stood outside the courthouse and referred to the Kingston Group as a “crime syndicate.” That phrase was repeated Sunday by Bryan Nelson, who with his wife, Mary, supplied federal authorities with evidence of the Washakie fraud.
“It is highly inappropriate, disturbing and disgusting for the son of the president to be ‘friends’ with someone like Nicholas Young (Kingston),” Bryan Nelson wrote in a statement to The Tribune. “There needs to be dignity, honor and integrity from someone like Donald Trump Jr. All of which are now well known to be missing.”

Couple of things.
Couple of things.
First, Jr's been in Utah since Thursday to help commemorate Pioneer Day last Friday, a state holiday that marks when the pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. I chuckled when I thought if junior's dad had been pres, those refugees from another state would have hit a wall and been denied. Too bad the Utes didn't have a wall at the Colorado border.
Then I started thinking about those confederate monuments. They are being questioned due to the fact they honor insurgents who rebelled against the US government.
Goddamn, if there a group that has rebelled (and even fought against) the US government, it's the mo's. They HATE the feds.
Maybe it's time to bring down Brigham Young's statue in Salt Lake. Look at mormon history and you'll see plenty of reasons to equate the mo's and the confederates. LOL
Maybe someday when I have bail money and some time to kill, I'll hop up on Brigham's statue with a sign. That would be a hoot.

Wow Stu, you'll have to
Wow Stu, you'll have to explain. Sounds like you're not very familiar with mormon history. Most folks wouldn't be.
Not sure that freedom of religion means starting your own government, creating your own currency and laws (including polygamy) in opposition to and direct in defiance of the country you're residing in. They were chased out of Illinois for such things and thought this isolated territory would give them the freedom to do as they pleased. The US government actually sent troops into Utah in 1857, known as the Utah War or Mormon War. The anti-fed atmosphere here is palpable, off-the-charts really.
Kinda funny to call this a "racist" attack, given the history of the church and black people, who were not "white and delightsome". They weren't given the ability to hold the priesthood until the mid-70"s when the church was in danger of losing their federal tax deductions on all their properties worldwide due to their discrimination and possibly losing their designation as a church. Then the prophet (profit?) conveniently had a revelation that God changed his mind. Excellent timing on his part.
My point was, if confederate statues are being removed for the anti-United States stands and actions that were taken, a look at mormon history would reveal some interesting parallels.
Not sure if the polygamist clan mentioned in the $511 million embezzlement story has a part in your accusation of an attack on "religion", but they have a long history of questionable dealings and practices, just like the Warren Jeffs clan that milked the government for welfare.

^Actually I think LDS are
^Actually I think LDS are total goons, and the western states' equivalent of 'the mob' but if you're running a country with Freedom Of Religion you can't just say "Presbyterians are OK, but Lutherans not so much..."
Of course immigrants from other countries (lacking Religious Freedom) have always seen this as a loophole to be exploited in any way possible. Every church or mosque or temple is going to take full advantage of their tax-exempt status, because they can.
Personally I can't find it in myself to hate polygamists if they want to poly. I am strongly opposed to polyester, although I'll admit it might have its useful applications in some fabrics.

They don't have a consensual poly lifestyle they marry the 13 year old girls off to some old geezer in the church and then they run out the teenage boys to be homeless and drain tax payer dollars.

Nobody's talking "hate" here
Nobody's talking "hate" here Stu. And yes, people can have differing opinions about various religions. That's allowed.
Questioning beliefs and practices when they impact others, including assigning 13 year-old girls to their rapists, as El Nino mentioned, is also allowed.
Consenting adults? Hey, knock yourself out. But when it comes to their children, protection is needed.
And ripping off taxpayers for millions isn't cool either. Don't have 5 wives and 35 kids if you can't support them. And as the article states, "the Southern Poverty Law Center has designated the sect, which includes members who practice polygamy, as a hate group".
Lots of religions around the world have abhorrent practices its okay to question. Like mutilating young girl's vaginas.
But for the record, I do like some momo ideas, like the idea of a "family home evening" once a week. Can't hurt gathering together. And sending 18 year-olds out into the world to see it. Now they do it as missionaries, and I don't listen to pimply brainwashed 18 year-olds for my spiritual guidance, but the fact they go see the world beyond Utah is a good thing. BTW, I used to work at a clinic that dealt with missionaries all the time.

Yeah, Ken, another chapter,
Yeah, Ken, another chapter, but I was trying to be somewhat succinct. The church is finally owning up to it. And accusations Brigham Young ordered it have arisen in the past.
And El Nino, we actually have homes set up in Salt Lake for the young male shunned "refugees" from those towns. Imagine having a teenage crush on a girl in your town only to have her assigned to a 40 year-old with 4 wives already. Fresh meat. A reward for devotion.

Oddly, a letter to the editor
Oddly, a letter to the editor in today's SL Tribune discusses this same thing. Starts out talking about the asterisk carved into Barry Bonds' baseball in Cooperstown, and then asks
"Could we not take a similar action for statues, buildings and public monuments inspired by leaders from prior eras, to continue to honor their accomplishments but no longer gloss over actions or words that were horrifically racist, sexist or otherwise repugnant? Yes, maybe it’s time to carve an asterisk into the side of the Washington Monument. And on the front of the Brigham Young Monument. And on every other statue, building or monument inspired by historical figures whose lives included both great actions and unforgivable sins. George Washington helped found a new nation. And his fortune was built on slave labor. Brigham Young led the pioneers to the West. And he was a vocal racist and misogynist."
