Jonah Hill to play Garcia in Scorsese(sp) film

Forums:

https://deadline.com/2021/11/jonah-hill-jerry-garcia-martin-scorsese-gra...

Not sure how this will play out. I'm not a huge fan of Hill's acting abilities yet he was good in Wolf of Wall Street.

Should have been Jack Black, but glad the project is moving forward.

Speaking of Garcia biopics, did anyone else see that cheesy TV program dramatizing the battle over Jerry's estate?   Suggested that a young Bob Weir corrupted Garcia and led him down a path of drugs, women, and debauchery.

Garcia listed at 5' 10' (looked taller to me)

Hill 5' 7 " and looks shorter

Wouldn't you need at least 3 people to play Garcia unless you're covering a short period of his life ?

Beyond that what good could come of this .

Unless Scorsese has him turn into a guy running items for the mob.

The guy that played him in Nice Dreams did a good job

What Bruce Vilanch not avail?

..."though surviving members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann have all signed on to executive produce."

Yeah, that should work out real well if they have to come to a consensus on anything.

I'll say it. Jonah Hill as Garcia? No. Just no.

Why aren't they using the hologram?

Why do they feel they have to do this BS....

^$$$,$$$,$$$

I'm skeptical yet godamn mf'in Martin Scorsese must see something here..

The guy that played him in Nice Dreams did a good job.<<<

Ha ha I just caught that, fishcane.

You talking about the dude sitting with Santana?

.

I finally clicked the link in the OP, and apparently this is a film about the entire band, so we have a lot more than just who's going to play Garcia to kick around here. For example, who's going to play Pigpen?

The kid from mask can play Keith

Eric Stoltz? I can see that.

booo

Jorge Garcia (from Lost) would have been a much better choice.

Yes that guy

lol, this is the same dude crying about being bagged on as and adult beginner surfer....

I just don't see this ending well LOL!

Jonah Hill as Jerry ? No fucking way. This time Scorsese sucks the weasel.

Stick to movies about musicians that are still alive Marty ( last waltz,, shine a light)

But if you have to make the movie, the Jerry from Half Baked would get my vote.

Garcia is played by impersonator David Bluestein.

20211118_165317.jpg

Nothing's official until someone heavily doses the new cast members' water cooler on the first day. Fuck yeah!!!!!!!!!

Make.It.Stop.

Martin Scorsese used de-aging visual effects for Robert De Nero's character in the Irishman.  I could see something similar for Garcia in this movie.  And yes, Jack Black would be a great Pigpen.

.

im not even sure what to say

i want to see the movie(just to see how they do it)
but i also want this to be a funny hoax/pranksterish

if done correctly could be alright, but thats a hard push

im torn

Ken Babbs could do a cameo of some sort...

....Ken Babbs could "relive the magic" and dose said water cooler.

Call me whacko but I think Jonah Hill can pull it off. The guy is a better actor then he is being given credit for here.

^ agree

just wondering what approach this will take , hopefully not a "slapstick" comedy

Trixie should play Jerry ala Cate Blanchett playing Bob Dylan in I'm Not There. I'd pay too see that, and I think the gender-bender twist would attract a younger demographic.

Whens the next boat leaving to Cast Away island? The end is nigh!

Jonah Hill?????laughlaughlaughX infinity!

Annabelle looks just like Jerry. She should play him.

honestly i think the more interesting movie content probably concerns fans of the dead - the people behind the massive traveling economy of psychedelics that supplied the whole country thru dead tour and the chemists who supplied them, the intersections of GD fandom and the beginning stages of the cannabis industry, how the "lot" subculture and economy was slowly formed, all the missing deadheads, and overall just the creation of this whole insane little insular world that formed in the deads footsteps. which isnt to say the story of the band itself is not exiting, inspirational and important...just that from my perspective it seems like  the most exiting stories where people have the most on the line likely happened in the outer orbits of the deads world than to the actual band members themselves. the 90's movie about the lot scene is fun but really just focused on average fans. especially in the cannabis world, as statutes of limitations expire and things become more socially acceptable, really incredible stories about the origins of major strains and major suppliers for huge areas of the country, all intertwined with dead tour, are coming out. there are probably a ton of great movies and books hidden in there.

>>>>honestly i think the more interesting movie content probably concerns fans of the dead

"Around the Fire"   Pretty terrible movie, but still interesting to see a coming of age drama about a kid who runs away from prep school to swing acid on GD tour.

Jack black only has one roll that he plays in every film : obnoxious.  I am happy to never see him act again.

...

I feel weird about it.

The more I think about it the less I like it. Smells like a big bowl of wrong.

We have all the tapes. The Grateful Dead Movie and the Amazon Doc.

That's the reality. Strange the Band would sign off on this.

Did Scorsese have some kind of script to show the guys ?

I think I'd rather hang out with Jonah than JK.

JK was an ass both times I met/talked with him....earlier days of DSO. Still really liked him in that band though.

A MOVIE ON JERRY'S LIFE AND AN ACTOR PORTRAYING HIM IS LUDICROUS!

PLEASE STOP THIS GD MADNESS

> Did Scorsese have some kind of script to show the guys ?

The article jazfish linked said "the guys" and Trixie were executive producers. I would think that would include script approval.

Executive producers = holding the purse strings

The Grateful Dead are legends, and it's generations of people like us who made them such. They make movies out of legends. This one won't be the last, but it will be the only one fully authorized by the band, and probably with GD music.

I personally have no reason to be outraged. It's just a movie. I bet it'll be fun.

Shappy playing Bill Graham would be awesome.

Something to think about while typing hesitantly cautious opinionated posts, again I must say, Marty S. must see something here.

Fucking Grand resume that director carries.

Glass half full and all that bullshit. His most talented mind might see something in his  many timed visionary experienced mind.

Dude is no doubt a living legend.

I'm looking forward.

Stop the bus, I'm getting off

 Ok.

Thanks for ^^^^^that!

I just seriously laughed out loud!

^^^^  Ha ha ha ha!!!

Well, ya have to admit, there's the whole lot of material that has great movie potential;

Picture if you will, the Fireworks / McGovern running for president story, acted out, perhaps narrated by Jeff Bridges
(where they all blew off fireworks at an agreed upon time in the wee hours, but the Democratic Presidential Nominee was staying in the same hotel.  All of a sudden, all hell breaks loose, explosions everywhere...  nothing but taxi drivers on the street....     out of no where guns appeared everywhere, several band members / crew got arrested, McGovern supposedly called Jerry on the phone personally to ask what the fuck was going on)

That would be a great scene.  A movie of all those great moments could be a total keeper....

Just hope its a ten part mini-series.  No way you can pack it all in with a two-hour movie, unless the plot centers around some particular day or event in the history of the band.

Sweet pitch, Noodler. Seems like you've got some Scorsese-esque imagery going there with the fireworks, taxi drivers, guns appearing out of nowhere, and the candidate confronting the rock star over the phone. Maybe set it to a tasty Bertha from 1976?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oy7jisOTyo

Or a Bertha during a safe heist at a Phil show with the Q:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kahyLqSqSUQ

With all the gun play and violence, would fit right in with a Scorsese movie.

^*** Whoa! have never heard that Phil story... never saw that show, either.  Was that GAMH?

Ah, Jonah Hill is talented and will probably do as good a job as anyone could.

Bottom line is it will be a bogus, foolish movie.

Scorsese? What does he know about the Grateful Dead?

Of course he'll say "he's done the research".

But does it matter? Who really cares?

Because it won't be right.

Meh.

>>>the people behind the massive traveling economy<<<

Movie title: "The DEATH Of A Band".

Or, "Stinking, Oozing, Motherfuckin' Sleazy Shakedown Street; The Death Of a Band."

That would be another name for it.

Or, "Losers On Display, Dragging a Band Down".

Lots of different names for the same thing.

Ah, the late '80s/'90s Grateful Dead.

Such a sad coda.

Yet on it goes.

Ultimately, it just shows what a great band they were even years after they weren't, and that's pretty far out.

LLTGD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And yes LLOLLO, that's the Great American Music Hall, but as always with moves & TV it isn't properly represented at all.

The cop was grooving on the floor, but then he was coming down the stairs to the bathroom - wrong - and then he went to his right from the bathroom to the backstage area - wrong.

Still, a fun little ditty for our hero and his band.

LLPL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I kind of like the idea of those executive producers each narrating a story (or 3) that gets dramatized out.  Perhaps big Steve could tell the fireworks story (heard on the Big Steve Hour), or Mountain Girl, the remaining pranksters, etc.  Hell, Hugh Hefner could narrate the Playboy Mansion story (he's 91 now).

Hugh Hefner died over four years ago.

Jerry never forgot to star in his own movie, but apparently the executive producers did.

James Franco as Rock Scully.

Michael Cera as Phil.

Seth Rogan as Keith Godchaux.

I see Cera more as Bob

I thought Franco and that crew had a falling out over the multiple accusations of sexual harassment levied against Franco?

Seth Rogan can be the cannabis wrangler, just keep him off camera.

I will not see it in my house,
I would not watch it with a mouse.
I will not catch it with the fam.
I will not watch it Sam I Am.

if its like all the Grateful Dead MERCH that is flooding the market place, wait until you see the ticket price

wish I would of bought a few of the ugly shoes now, custy city

1 for $1,200

2 for $2,000

Man, you guys are a tough crowd. It's a movie about the early years of the band, with the direct input of the surviving members, crew, and probably others surrounding the organization (Pranksters, wives/girlfriends, etc). It was fun period in their career, before they were huge and when it was part of a true counter-culture. I heard Bid Steve talk about it for about 15 seconds yesterday, and he said that it's in the very early stages, there's a long way to go, and he seemed excited.

If the band and crew are having a good time telling their story, I bet it'll be a really fun movie. Can you imagine them all sitting around, reminiscing, laughing, and deciding to throw in some whacky scene, then helping to script it? All I'm thinking is, "never trust a prankster."

Dollars to donuts that the opening scene is Bobby walking in the back door of the music store and meeting Jerry.

>>>>>Dollars to donuts that the opening scene is Bobby walking in the back door of the music store and meeting Jerry.

Finger chop opener gets my vote

Nothing's official until someone heavily doses the new cast members' water cooler on the first day. Fuck yeah!!!!!!!!!  >>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Hey Joe, this is something I could get behind.............No you we can get this thing off the ground

> Man, you guys are a tough crowd.

You must be new around here. Welcome to the black screen, Briank.

So who's going to sign up to be an extra in this film..or are we all too old?

It'll be a shocking turn of events when the whole movie very slowly revolves around the "the fast lane" life of Jerry in ole Rock's basement.

Jonah doesn't have the gravitas and Scorsese lost his fastball about 4 presidencies ago. Will this be as terrible as that Long Strange Trip documentary? Dunnos.

Ellen could certainly play Weir. That would make it slightly more interesting.

Ellen-DeGeneres-played-guitar-during-show.jpeg

Opening scene could be Joe Garcia's drowning.  Jerry's early years have some other important moments.  Being gifted an accordion and trading it in for his first guitar.  His first time getting stoned.  Crossing paths for the first time with Phil Lesh at the movies.  Joining the Army. getting stationed at the Presidio, getting taught how to flatpick, and getting discharged.  Surviving the car accident that killed his friend Paul Speegle.  Living out of his car with Robert Hunter, having Phil get him on KPFA's Folk show, teaching at Dana Morgan's and meeting Bill.  Meeting Pigpen, forming Mother McCree's, having Pigpen urge them to go electric.

....so many (potential) roads

I don't know about the opening scene, but what scene gets the long take with the steadicam?

Where the real focus was all along, in the 45-min Darkstar, of course!

And how does Marty get the obligatory Rolling Stones song into the movie?  Maybe their Cow Palace gig?

Paul Rudd as Danny Rifkin.

Danny McBride as Pigpen.

Will Farrell as Kesey.

Bill Hader as Hunter.

Rose Byrne as Mountain Girl.

Steve Carell as Mickey Hart.

Are they going to cgi Jonah Hill's middle finger?

Will we get a look into Jerry's briefcase?

^^^^ LOL

I could see Tilda Swinton playing Bowie, but not Phil.

How's he gonna work Pesci in ?

Hopefully this film never gets made or sees the light of day

I'm always surprised by the amount of old heads on this board that are OK with the continued bastardization of the Grateful Dead and our surrounding community. I honestly think it's really messed up and it bothers me pretty deeply to see the things that I have truly loved and have grown to be an integral Piece of who I am basically be made into a pop culture meme for lack of a better word at the moment, 90s Grateful Dead shirts for $100 on the Internet, john mayer being a known mysoginist, rich privileged white kid, who can do whatever and say whatever to women amd people of color (documented) and its ok! Or just throw a dancing Bear or steely on anything and charge money for it,  or john hill, the total opposite of what we stand for, and an insanely selfish selfserving, bottom teir "actor", just go along with it right? whatever, because you have so much FOMO you don't even know your own soul, anymore. It's all a dream we dreamed one afternoon,  where is the fucking respect, and convictions ? And how many of u old-school deadheads get right behind it, the majority. Its not right. How do you you all justify it being OK? All the time.  Like fuckin A are you even you anymore with actual cares about our community...The Internet has seriously ruined so much great stuff.  It's really Quite amazing actually to talk with people at shows and watch them do one thing and then on the Internet and everywhere else do a complete other I don't even know if real people exist anymore.

We're the Hell's Angels known mysoginists or gentrifiers?

Hopefully they have the scene where Garcia tosses Phil down the Carousel stairs. That is reenactment worthy.

Neil, buddy, maybe you should be chastising the Core 4. They are the ones allowing all this "bastardization." Sneakers, sweaters, movies...when will it end?

So sorry that it's ruining your romantic ideals of all things GD. I can see that it's really upsetting you.

Other than that, I'm somewhere between lol and smh and your post.

I hope Melissa Cargill gets due attention since she was the real chemist. She is 79 this year. Owsley was a lot of things, but he wasn't a chemist.

Women were the brains behind most of the psychedelic ’60s’ operations: they handled the money and merchandise for the Grateful Dead, raised the children the men fathered and later abandoned, and, clearly, ran LSD labs. They got the responsibility and none of the credit.

I hope this film never gets made either but I doubt that carries any sway whatsoever.

It's more than a little ironic that Fare Thee Well was actually the beginning of the big-time cash grab.

AGREED

I remember years ago there was talk of a Janis film, that thankfully was never made. Any attempt would be purely sacrilegious,, just as with this movie. Don't overstep your bounds Marty. If you want to immortalize, use existing footage of the legends.

Now, if Scorsese wanted to populate this film with wholly fictional characters, like he did with the Rolling Thunder Revue film, that might be interesting.

I eagerly await the Hitler Rant video on the subject of this film, if not the actual film.

Ice nein, nein, nein, nein, nein!

> Any attempt would be purely sacrilegious<

That's just silly.

No, that was not a movie strictly about Janis, just a loose interpretation of her life that Janis's family hated.

I mean an actual bio pic with an actress actually playing Joplin,  like what Scorsese has in mind for the Dead. There have been a couple good documentaries on Janis over the years, but to date no bio pics.

2015's Little Girl Blue being the best thing so far.

I see no reason for bio pics when so much footage of the real thing exists.

Money hungry fucks should all be ashamed of themselves. Pure sacrilege. I tried making it thru that one they did on Jimi, All Is By My Side, made it thru about 10 mins before turning it off disgusted.

Leadbelly was a fairly well done bio pic on the man, but hardly any actual film of him exists, same with Woody and Bound For Glory.

Looks like Hill didn't get the memo about black t-shirts.

Edit. I didn't click the link.

I wonder if he is inhaling the cig hit.

Haha, I watched the video. There is no clear image of Hill inhaling. He has a long way to go in learning how a cigarette smoker holds a cigarette.  Cigarette scenes are tough on the nonsmoker actors.

This is not starting well.

Who's your Jerry now?

It's all about the voice.  If it doesn't work we will hate the movie.

I've seen some culty shit in my time, and from my perspective, those who literally worship Jerry and the church of the dead (early or latter day) are no different from Tom Cruise and Scientology or any of the big TV evangelists' followers .  Kooky with a side of creepy.

Weight Loss: Lost 112 lbs.

Actor Jonah Hill best known for his movies “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “21 Jump Street” and “Superbad,” has had a fantastic weight loss transformation throughout his career. The actor’s weight has fluctuated up and down for his many roles. Hill admitted that he lost his excess weight strictly through diet and exercise. Exercises such as boxing, strength training, and cardio have been added to Hill’s one-hour daily workout regime. As for his diet, Hill consumes smaller portion sizes that consist of high amounts of protein, veggies, grains, and fats.

‘It’s not helpful’: Jonah Hill asks fans not to comment on his body in his official Instagram account…

Lots of panic flailing around in here.

If the boys want to make a movie let them make a movie. Jonah Hill may end up doing great and they do three or four sequels. 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s.

Clearly there is a story to be told. If they do it right lets hope.

Peace!

I have a few important questions.

Does Jonah Hill even like the Grateful Dead?, i think yes.

Does Jonah Hill know what he's getting himself into?, i think no.

Was he high when he picked up the call from Scorsese and accepted the role?, i think yes.

Is there a better choice?, maybe, maybe not.

Where is Doogels?  If they cast a few real deadheads instead of fake deadheads it would help.

Well there ya have it. I like it!

Good to see you, Fog. Hope all is dandy!
