John McLaughlin

Forums:

Saw that guitar legend John McLaughlin was playing a club here in town on Dec. 1.   I have seen him in theaters before, but was wondering what he was doing playing the Doug Fir Lounge and was stoked to see him in such an intimate setting:

But alas, Jambase had the wrong dude and when I went to get tickets from the venue website, saw it was some totally other dude named Jon McLaughlin:

Doh.  That's not the first time that something like happened with Jambase.   A few years ago, I saw on Jambase that legendary hard rock band UFO was playing some local club (had the picture and everything).  Got tickets and me and buddy show up ready to rock, only to find out that we are the oldest people by far there and it was an EDM band also called UFO.   Venue refunded our tickets.

Anyway wish it was the John McLaughlin thing was the real deal.   That dude fucking shreds.

Whew, for a moment I thought this was going to be one of "those" threads.

And oh man, what a huge mistake by Jambase!

I've gotten excited a number of times over the years when I see Jon McLaughlin listed somewhere. I think he's from the Bay Area as he plays around here a lot, fools me for a minute almost every time.

But damn, Jambase had that totally wrong. You should contact them about some type of restitution.

And did you enjoy the EDM show?

Ah, I see you got your dough back for that one. Nice of the venue to refund you.

This reminds me of standing in line at one of those annual music fests at Seattle Center many many years ago to see local artist Jim Page.

The guy in front of me thought he was seeing Jimmy Page, LOL.

I once had an interaction with an irate man while working a multi-act rock show that was sponsored by House of Blues.

He was apocalyptic because it wasn't a blues show, since it had the word Blues (along with House of) on the ticket.

The promoters felt that he had seen the acts he wanted to and was trying to scam his money back later in the show.

When I told him the venue would not be refunding his money he called me bad names.

Seen John many times.  My favorite little club experience as while on a bigness trip to Dallas-Ft. Worth in 1989, read his was plating at this newish little club in Ft. Worth called the Metroplex--maybe a couple of hundred-maybe.  By boss, was probably in his mid 60s back then and used to sing in local big bands in Boston was like, sure.  Told him he was a jazz cat.  Sat 3rd row and it was a trio--I would have to look up who the other cats were in the band but, sweet.  My boss was like, tell me what else by him I should check out.  I said, well Inner Mounting Flame is a start, Love, Surrender and Devotion with Carlos or Friday Night in San Francisco. Don't remember if he got any.

Now I read his tour about 2 years ago with Jimmy Herring (who John can't praise enough) was his last because of arthritis-that is what he said then, anyway  Last time I saw him was Clapton's Chicago Crossroads show and well, ain't nobody like John

I see that J. Garcia was working out of the bullpen this season for the Giants.

I think there's a Jerry Garcia doing standup these days, as well.

>>>I see that J. Garcia was working out of the bullpen this season for the Giants<<<

Yeah, and just like the other San Francisco Garcia, some nights he was brilliant, other nights his head was bouncing off the mike with egg in his beard.

The first time I saw Mahavishnu John was that Friday Night in San Francisco show at the Warfield. My friend and I were young & dumb and thought it was going to be an electric show. We were really disappointed when we saw it was going to be just the three guys on acoustic guitars.

We weren't disappointed for long.

That was 40 years ago now. Damn, I'll have to give that one a spin today.

I've seen him many times over the years since then. I saw that trio with Kai Eckhardt on bass and a dude on an assortment of Indian drums a couple of times, once opening for Miles Davis at the Greek (I thought they blew the aging Davis away that night).

I also saw the tour with Herring, again at the Warfield, and went with the same friend from that acoustic show so many years earlier. That WAS electric and was also great (and he had one of Phil's frickin' DISHWASHERS in his band!).

It looks like he's scheduled for some shows in Europe in March, so hopefully I'll get to see him again.

Dude is a one-of-a-kind legend.

I think that he's still playing with John (always better with the "h", IMHO).  Or at least he has over recent months.

Jerry Garcia checked me into a FL hotel in 2019
