John Mayer’s Dead & Company

Forums:

Concerns for the elder Mayer's health, but I did find this a revealing description of the band.

"John Mayer’s Dead & Company canceled concert due to musician’s family medical emergency"

John Mayer first came to my attention when he opened the three shows of Phil's New Year's run. I thought his sets were all too long, and to me his sound was repetitive. It was billed that he would also sit in with Phil and Friends, but that didn't happen. There was an increase of decked out girls in the audience, though, that was for sure. This was the same run where we witnessed Ryan Adam's epic meltdown.

I guess it is his Deadco - they were unable to proceed without him!

When Billy K is unable to play, they put in a sub.

They should buy everyone a sub when bill is out

I thought it was John Mayer's Grateful Dead.

I've heard that Dead&co is Mayers band. At least from a business perspective.

I think it was the respectful thing to cancel the show(s) if Mayer's father was in critical condition. Earlier reports were that he had died.

But if Mayer had an injury such as Billy and was unable to play, I'd like to believe the band would have found a sub for the show(s)

I wonder how many people would demand a refund if Mayer wasn't playing? Were any refunds issued when Billy K sat out?

What would happen if Bobby got sick or injured and couldn't play?

(you're welcome for the set up)

>>I've heard that Dead&co is Mayers band. At least from a business perspective<<

without deadco, John Mayer would be touring and selling out large venues under his own name rather than with deadco, making millions

without deadco, the other band members would be selling out George's or Sweetwater or The Independent, billed as former deadco members, making hundreds

at least from a business perspective

DeadCo is Bobby’s band, not John’s. Yes, John has the biggest draw as an artist on his own, but DeadCo is Bobby’s band. Bobby decides the tempos, Bobby and his manager Matt Busch make the setlists.

But here is the main indicator:

When Billy is out, they get a sub: Bobby’s drummer, Jay.

When John tested Covid positive for Mexico, do we not recall that Tom Hamilton was going to perform in John’s place? Yes: Hamilton was scheduled to sub for Mayer, and the show was about to go on, until Mexico got canceled just because of the whole Covid thing.

So, even Mayer was going to be replaced.

The one guy who won’t be replaced with a sub is Bobby. DeadCo is Bobby’s band. And that really shouldn’t surprise anyone, actually. It’s Bob Weir, come on. The guy who played 30 years next to Jerry as a singer and writer.

I thought they were just another

(((((GDCB)))))

They're a band beyond description.

I will say this. DeadCo might be Bobby’s band, but John Mayer has risen to the level on guitar where he is actually and truly THE best guitarist I’m hearing in the world of GD music. Better than anyone else, far better. I don’t care if it’s Mattson, JK, Stu, Kimock, the JRAD guys, or anyone else including the star ringers like Warren and Herring.

Mayer has found the sweet tone that works all the way around. His playing and phrasing is far beyond the stock shredder blues riffs of many others. Mayer has found the spaces between the notes, he has found the melody and the dynamics. He fires it up at the right time and cools it down at the right time. This current tour has convinced me. Even from the last show in Bristol, listen to Mayer on Playing in the Band, Uncle John, Terrapin, Stella. He is playing that music on lead guitar more beautifully than any other guitarist in the field. Yes, John Mayer. He is the best. Not an imitator, but a master. And he is not struggling to find it, he is right there in the zone.

Clapton once said that Mayer is a total master who doesn’t know how good he is. I think that’s true and it has grown. Mayer has really been studying Garcia, not just the notes, but the feel and the melody. He is certainly the man for that job in that role.

DeadCo is Bob’s band, but they are REALLY lucky to have John Mayer up there.

Mayer's sound is also big enough to fill a stadium. None of those other lead guitarists, mentioned above, have that ability.

It's funny how so many who fluff everything Phil does also hate on DeadCo, for whatever reasons. I listened to hunks of the last 2 Phil shows and had to scratch my head. I'm not saying it was bad, but objectively it also wasn't phenomenal. DeadCo sure as hell isn't a "worse" band.

Phil generally sticks to danceable tempo and is just plain more fun to see

^^^ Strongly agree!

That's subjective, not objective. The reality is that 20,000-40,000 people a night are seeing DeadCo. The vast majority are up and dancing for much of the shows, and the vast majority are enjoying the fuck out of it.

At least a few people on this site have said that real Deadheads would never be into DeadCo. That's just ridiculous.

If they have, I haven't heard it. You gonna name names, or stick with the straw men?

I'm not saying people don't dance to it, I have... but it feels more like tai chi. The tempo itself is an objective observation, but your right the danceability threshold is certainly subjective

My band could beat up your band! Sometimes different trips for sometimes different kidz but there really is no argument to be had. Enjoy the ride and the shows! Nothing Lasts.

I can't remember, Mike. It was just someone spewing some shit. It doesn't matter much. I retract my original assertion.

No biggie, BK. I just don't recall anyone on the black screen being all that strident in their dislike of D&C. My line is that's not for me because of the tempos and I really don't like John Mayer, but I'm glad our music is alive and has a young audience to carry it forward.

> there really is no argument to be had

In a way, this argument has been going on for 20+ years, going back at least to dueling NYE shows in Oakland (TOO v. P&F) on 12/31/2000.

...I guess that may be more like 55 years+ for some.

Listen to the music play.

"In a way, this argument has been going on for 20+ years, going back to dueling NYE shows in Oakland (TOO v. P&F) on 12/31/2000."

At the time, I remember some uber-innie celebrity dead heads (no, I won't name any names) bitching about "Phil pulling this shit" scheduling his NYE show in the same town as The Other Ones show.

I went to the Phil show that night and it rocked.

i was at HJK too, Roarshock, and the shockwaves from that one are still rippling through the universe and in my head.

people that tend to like D&C tend to like anything that is thrown at them in the GD style. it's all good and they eat it up. i will say the setlists i have seen of late are good.

>>people that tend to like D&C tend to like anything that is thrown at them in the GD style.

Tell us more...

Meh. Dunno 'bout that. Yesterday I listened to the stream from the Oregon Country Fair Main Stage.. Melvin and Friends were doing a Robert Hunter tribute, with Scott Law on lead guitar.

MUCH better than anything I've heard Mayer do.

IMO.
