John Lennon 40 Years Ago

Forums:

I'll never forget how sad it was in our living room.  Darkness.

In February he will be gone longer then he was alive for. Close friend of mine was the surgical resident who tried to save his life, not the idiot who claimed to for so many years. I was on hand for the bitter sweet moment when he met John's sister Julia for the first time

took this pic of them together, tears were shared

I remember it was Howard Cossell announcing it to many of us watching Monday Night Football, calling it an "unthinkable tragedy."  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n73GFvAyIjs

I was coming down from an acid trip when I heard the news that night. Talk about your bummers.

^ Seriously.

i was completely stunned

powerful moments in that Oakland Arena

god bless JOHN LENNON - what a beautiful man, and he gave us all so much

i will never forget that night, nor    love is all you need

I had met some friends that night at a local bar and left to drive home. When I got into the car and started it up the radio was set to WNEW-FM and almost immediately pioneering free form DJ, Vin Scelsa made the announcement that John Lennon had been shot. I sat there stunned and couldn't bring myself to drive. Shortly thereafter Scelsa announced that Lennon was dead. In one of the most moving radio broadcasts ever, Vin held a virtual wake. People were calling in, lots of Lennon music was played, old interviews rebroadcast and everyone shared their grief and ttried to make sense of it all. I sat in the bar parking lot for hours, Scelsa didn't leave the airwaves until 5 am. Somewhere in those hours a local police car pulled up and checked on me. I told him that John Lennon had been shot and killed and I just couldn't drive yet and was just sitting listening to the radio. He told me no problem and stay as long as I needed. Didn't get bothered anymore that evening/morning.

Frank was not at all happy with either of those 2 on that whole Fillmore 71 dealeeooo.

From the meeting to discuss joining the Mothers onstage, to the release of the performance.  Great photo tho

RIP John - thanks for Sean

Thanks for the story, Tony.  Reminds me of how powerful live radio could be back then. How fortunate Vin was in the chair for his community of listeners to make them feel like a family mourning together.
