Guitarist Jimmy Herring has announced a new group, The 5 of 7, which will be joining him for a batch of newly announced fall tour dates this year.

For the project, the Widespread Panic lead axe man will be joined by keyboardist Matt Slocum, vocalist/guitarist Rick Lollar, bassist Kevin Scott, drummer Darren Stanley.

“Rick, Matt and Kevin had a band together called King Baby,” Herring says in a press announcement, which explains that The 5 of 7 will be a more song-based collaboration as opposed to Herring’s previous outfit, The Invisible Whip. “I heard their record [and] I couldn’t help but think, ‘Man, if I could get together, play some of Rick’s songs, some of my songs, some covers, and maybe write a few things together, we may be on to something…’ In addition to being a fine guitar player, Rick is a really powerful singer. Some of his favorite singers are Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder, and those are some of my favorites, too.”

Herring also notes his shared musical history with Slocum, Scott and Stanley, all of whom collaborated with the late Atlanta music icon Col. Bruce Hampton. “That’s important to me because it’s such a different thing—if you’ve been through that school, you want to play with people who have been through that too. You  understand how to think on your feet and exist in the moment.”

On the fall tour dates, which kick off Sept. 12 in Denver and move across the country to the East Coast, Herring says, “There’ll be vocals, there’ll be instrumentals. There will be funk and rock and roll, with some songs leaning towards more sophisticated harmony…but, to me, it’s just music.”

Tix for Albany and Ridgefield go on sale Friday 5/10.

I have not seen Herring in a band I didn't like, looking forward to this.

The Jimmy Herring Band w/Sipe on drums was phenomenal.  Not a bad seat in Ridgefield.  Not sure I can make it yet but it's on my radar.
