Hope everyone has a ball at the old house of fun tonight!  Got to admit I really miss spending all day on Market St, watching the freak show and line grow. I had so much fun there waiting for Jerry & then Phil...Much love to Nelson & Cage and all of us fighting our battles...

So happy for those of you who can be there.

Canyon, sending love and good wishes to you, too.

really miss spending all day on Market St, watching the freak show and line grow <<<<

I expect to be there.

It's 37 years now I've been going into that old theater to see shows. The first was Weather Report with Jaco, then five of the fifteen with the Good Ol' and I've been hooked ever since.

And other than the seats on the floor removed in '87 (ultimately for the better) the place is just about exactly the same as it ever was, which is one of the reasons why I love the place so much.

And except for the glaring omission of Original Joe's around the corner the entire area is pretty much exactly the same, which is rare. I really miss OJ's on Taylor.

And whatever's up Canyon, keep fighting the good fight.

In your honor I won't put that which shall not be named on my turkey sandwich today.

And whatever's up Canyon, keep fighting the good fight. <<<<

Sorry, Alex... I had 3 extra and sold them last night

Oh, ok smiley

The city seems far away at this moment, but maybe a nap and a shot of espresso will do the trick. See you on the floor.

"It's 37 years now I've been going into that old theater to see shows."

Me too, there abouts. First show was Bob Dylan with Mark Knopfler on guitar and a solid set of all Dylan's Christian songs! (and ONLY Christian songs!)

I only made it to one 1980 Grateful Dead show. That run was an exceptionally hard ticket, but somehow I got one front row center (seats in the Warfeild ran all the way to the stage back then, fyi youngsters).

Most recent visit was last November for the birthday of young Jackie Greene. That was fun.

Might come downtown tonight for a hoot.

Sorry to miss everyone but much thanks to Roshambo for the duck.

I'll miss you Crabneesh.

Take care,

John

Well wishes, crabneesh.

Thank for the link

There's some good music going on on the stream! Doc, I'm still sick but couldn't help listening a little before I go to bed.

I can smell that Duck restaurant from my house! Haha    need to lay a hoodie down to claim a spot.

Big shout out to Crabneesh... Misssed ya

I've been having some hand/wrist problems the last few years. Just got through a bad flu yesterday - now my wrists are nearly pain/numbness-free!!!

It's a friggin' miracle!

Vibes for all for pain-free existence if at all possible.

I vid capped some of the 2nd set and the whole 3rd set except for the start of Dear Prudence cause my cam battery crapped out.  Got Oteil's solo till the end of it but was a bit dissapointed to have lost that portion.
Not against Oteil's interpretation of Prudence - but that was the only song where I thought the groove was whacked.
Seemed like Oteil was internally fighting himself between McCartney's original bass line and the spin that John Kahn gave to it.

Regardless - I was super psyched to see Oteil blaze of these songs and Stu was kicking ass (as usual).

I also dug Zach Nugent - kid can really elevate a jam and I liked when he went off the Garcia map and was himself.

I thought the Rowan set - while fun - was a display of a band that had not rehearsed.
A lot of loose ends and sloppiness - but the jams and lead breaks were fun.

Wish Rowan had done his song Mississippi Moon - but we got it with Zach and JGB.

LOVE SEEING THE WARFIELD ROCKING yet again with Garcia's Music!

No Greg. This is 1 in a different part of the city with the best duck in town.

When Kate was @ the duck place making MSG plans did she mean monosodium glutamate?

A damn fun night.

I thought the music was up & down, but that was to be expected, and there were way more ups than downs.

To me the Nelsonless Band's set was a bit of a dropped ball, as beyond the obvious unrehearsed aspect the song choices IMO lost the crowd in the middle of their set.

There were clearly lots of people there who didn't know who Peter was and/or weren't fans of the DNB, and as an opening act I think a band always needs to keep it upbeat and rocking to grab & hold the attention of people who aren't there to see that band, but after a promising start they got into a number of slow tempo songs in a row and the crowd chatter got louder & louder with each one.

Land Of The Navaho is a fine song but a poor choice for a party crowd wanting to rock. It didn't help that they played it slower than usual and worse that Sless's peddle steel crapped out and he & a tech spent half the song fucking around with it before he surrendered and put on his guitar, but clearly the steel was going to be featured on that one and the mess up seemed to throw the whole thing off the tracks.

Peter actually cut the song short and ended it after a shorter than normal native yodel bit (or whatever you call that thing he does in that song) . Then the woman guest who was onstage all set and also sat in with them at TxR a few weeks ago did another really slow song and at that point nothing was moving except people's tongues. She was real good on guitar and harmonies with Peter though. I'm not sure she's needed with the DNB but she's a good player and doesn't get in the way at all.

When they closed their set with a ripping Iko it got the room jamming again and saved things and they got a real good ovation at the end of that; they should have done more of that.

It was really fun to see Peter rocking out with a rock band, even digging in a little on a couple of guitar solos. I would love to see this lineup play a series of shows and get rehearsed up a bit. Peter really adds a dimension to the group with his excellent voice, but even with all the experience on that stage it's a lot to ask an unrehearsed band to go on a big stage like the Warfield as an opening act and get right in the groove. Still, there was some excellent playing and I thought the start & end to the set was strong.

I was disappointed when the curtain opened for Melvin (just the way it did with Jerry back in the olden times) and it was his regular band up there, and it seemed to me that the guitar player might have been feeling just a little intimidation playing in Jerry's house (the main dressing room I believe is still called "Jerry's room" and Jerry's image is painted on the stage door) and standing where Jerry stood so many times.

While he was still OK at first I was thinking I'd sure rather have Stu up there, but as Treble said, as soon as he started playing less like Jerry he began ripping some damn good solos. I thought from Breadbox until the end of the set he relaxed and started really jamming well and the room got grooving, with Mystery Train a real highlight.

Melvin's second set had the original Jerryettes, Stu and Otiel, and I thought Melvin kind of gave Stu just a bit of a fuck you when before they started he said something like, "Please welcome Stu Allen. I think this is Stu's first time at the Warfield. No pressure." Nah, no pressure kid.

I thought Stu was really good but I've seen him a lot better, but again it's not easy to step onto a big stage halfway through a show and play with a band he's never really played with. Needless to say Otiel was just great, digging in with authority & ripping everything he played with his thick, bright sound; he really picked the whole place up and got it rocking out. The Deal encore with everyone onstage was a scorching rocker that was a fine way to finish a long show.

Ultimately for me the real highlight of the night was the venue and the setting; a three set show allowed for LOTS of music and time for the "downs" to be picked up by the "ups", a 3/4 filled room allowed for lots of time to move easily anywhere on the floor and balcony, and two intermissions allowed for plenty of time to hang and converse with friends. It was great to have a longer conversation with Treblemaker, a very cool guy and I hope to have more of those.

Overall it was a great party, a real good, loooong show and tons of fun with a bunch of great folks in a favorite, legendary room.

Just a little rock 'n roll.

It's all I ask.

You want some more?

Well here's some more.....  ; - )

Thanks for the excellent review. Just FYI, Stu was in Melvin's band two Jerrys ago (pre-Dave A'Bear) -- I think he left around 2012 (?) when he had kids and he decided to mostly get off the road. So he certainly knows the ropes with Melvin and Pete Lavezzoli, if not Oteil.

appreciate the posting of the videos and setlists and reviews... sounds like it was a real good party!

last night, I wish I'd known about the Mixlr stream by Seaphood Puddler... but Treble's videos are helping to fill that gap

saw some familiar folks up front in the videos... Prof. Larry, "Ro On The Rail," and others

also found this YouTube video of the 3rd set opener, which begins w/ the tail end of Melvin's band introductions (Stu Allen: "He's in the hot seat tonight!"): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1hN-V-PCR4

wouldn't be surprising if Katie Skene also made the trip to Alaska

Any word on the Big Sur shows ?

Hope all had fun, I really would have enjoyed Rowan with DNB.

Love Rowan, that setlist looks great.

Thanks for the great honest review lance!

Seeing rowan + j cassady @ mccabes next fri

Great reviews gentleman. Much appreciated.

>>>FYI, Stu was in Melvin's band two Jerrys ago<<<

I probably didn't say that bit about playing "with a band he's never really played with" as well as I could have.

I saw Stu with Melvin many times and they were great together, but that was quite a while ago now, and while I'm no expert I don't think playing in a band is like a video game that just starts right up when it's turned on again, especially starting up halfway through a show in a relatively huge venue. And that's not even taking into account whatever weirdness might remain between Stu & Melvin.

Still it was really good, and it's good that Melvin keeps this group working and sounding good. I avoided the band for a long time because I thought it would be sad at best and terrible at worst, but I forgot that the Jerry Garcia Band was always a bit of a cover band, I forgot how much I love so many of the songs in that groups catalog and I forgot how good Melvin is.

Stu won me over the first time I saw him with Melvin and I've been a fan ever since. His work with Phil on those "year shows" they did in '15 & '16 was outstanding, and he continues to rip it up with Phil every time I see them together, including last Saturday in this new thing "Thunder & Lightning" they seem to be doing this year.

But I still think Stu was at his best with Melvin, and it was fun to see them together again.

"He's in the hot seat tonight!"

Yeah, that was it. My impression was that it was a bit snarky, but that could well have been just classic uneducated speculation on my part. Still, I thought at the time, "Damn Melvin, way to put some pressure on him."

It was like Melvin was saying, "My new guy just kicked ass, wha'cho got biotch?"

Or it could have just been good natured ribbing between old bandmates, but it's so much more fun to look for drama.

I am a zoner after all.

Here's a SBD of Dead Set with Oteil and Zach Nugent...

>> I saw Stu with Melvin many times and they were great together, but that was quite a while ago now

Ah I see, got it. Glad to hear they were gelling pretty well on the big stage.

Zach might just be my new favorite 'fake Jerry' - mainly because he was capable of playing himself, and elevated the JGB from a nostalgic act to something new and refreshing.

Peter Rowan and Katie Skeen on vocals gave the DNB a smooth - soothing  sound, and there were some BOOMing jams...making me missing David up there.

I recognize at least 4 people on the rail

and, I think I see Mully, and maybe Lefty next to him, at the first drink rail smiley

Garyfish, you are correct. Lefty and Johnny were in their traditional spot (Lefty: "never miss a Warfield show"); we were behind them. Good spot.

Thanks for sharing,  3dot!   And it was nice to hang out during the front end of the show.

I ended up wandering around blissfully to enjoy different sounds and perspectives.

Great times at the Warfield.

It must have been quite something to hear the sweet sounds of Jerry Band Music wafting through the place again :)

With Peter Rowen and the DNB!  Totally understand the desire to yodel in there.

Thats some crowd too!!!  Wishing David all the best and a speedy recovery!
