Jerry Band Gear

Forums:

Was just listening to JGB December 74

Wondering, if the wall of sound was in full swing for the Dead what kind of P.A. did Jerry play through at his solo band shows?

Sounds crispy!

I know not too many people care but I bet the answer is out there.

does this count as a music thread?

-^ Pretty thorough history of Jerry's guitars there.
And a little interview with Healy --

There they go through the mods to Jerrify your Fender Twin preamp. Interesting stuff.

Just guessing, but I'd imagine the JGB never toured with their own PA system. Their own amps sure, but they didn't play big enough places to justify the cost, especially in those days.

^ Heathen I would guess they brought their own PA into Stadium tours circa early (90's) but not much earlier.

'89 onward, arena set-up looked same as GD's to me.  Less cluttered stage behind band, and monitors in front, but the hanging PA looked the same.

Reduced size Meyer Linear Array at most of the shows I saw

After a little research apparently the last Wall of Sound show was at the Winterland(funny I always thought this was a NYE run) in October before the above mentioned shows. Then the Dead went on a break. Next Dead show was the Kezar in March

Maybe JGB took a paired down Wall on this short run? Or debuting the next generation of touring P.A.?

Not present at any Garcia Band shows prior to 1981 or so.  From that year forward to 1985 or so, it was no Wall Of Sound,  but good and Loud.

Later in the 1980's and mid 1990's,  bigger Venues instead of Basketball gyms,  probably the scaled-down Meyer Sound system.

My personal recollection from 'small venue' shows was that the on-stage Amps & Hard-Truckers speaker cabs were quite loud and clean... If you were close to Stage.
