Saw James with Muddy Waters back in the 70's, great show! At a much later date, he used my Fender Twin amp when he played a local festival, great guy! RIP
who plays blues harmonia any more? i know there has to be several but the only one i can think of, and he's not a "pure" blues player, is john popper. jagger is very good, but he doesn't play more than 1 song on harp any more.
Damn sorry to hear about this. Only had the pleasure of seeing him twice.
I saw him in 2015 at Jazz Standard in NYC. He could still put on a great show.
Other time was MSG 1993 w/ the Dead & David Murray. He came out for a nice Lovelight & the I Fought the Law encore. Problem was, he wasn't turned up enough in the mix. A great moment for me personally that had the potential to be better w' a little more volume on the harmonica mic.
time for another blues renaissance. forgot about willis, he's pretty good but makes way more $$$ killing bad guys in movies. it'd be nice if he got serious for at least 1 recording session and recruit top of the line players & put together a little set to be released. not that he needs the money, but it could be a pretty good thing.
Good Morning Little Schoolgirl starts at about 7:55. I was so pumped that Cotton brought out the good old Blues Welcome Mat for the Grateful Dead's visit to our city:
BTW: these vids are just random picks, in general. There may be better performances online, but I'm enjoying my rediscovery of people I used to love seeing live.
Jerry Portnoy is still around. He was the Muddy Waters Band harmonica player from the mid-70's through the 80's. James Harman is another decent living blues harpist.
Then there's the not strictly Blues cats, like Lee Oskar (War) and Magic Dick (J. Geils Band).
I never expected the to hear the GD play "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" until that show, Roland. And of course Steve Miller sat in on a couple of tunes that night too.
Thanks, Thom2, I should've at least remembered Lovelight :(
>>That was the one time I caught Cotton too, Joe.
>>I was there too! That was a special show for me.
Mike and roland, can't help but wonder if we ever met or were dancing right next to one another...
I do remember a true freak who called himself Timetek; was dressed in some Indian garb and wore a stopwatch around his neck. Those were some very strong tabs...I hope he's still on this side of the grass and doing well....lol...bless the freaks
I had to go back and watch that Good Morning Little School Girl - even better than I remember! I often have mixed feelings about special guests, but this one worked really well.
slimjim, I remember that we were somewhere in the middle of the field both nights, maybe some distance behind the soundboard? I was the guy in tee shirt and shorts and I think my gf had on Guatemalan pants. :) Some good memories indeed.

Chris Robinson can play a bit, but not at the level we're talking about here.
Matthew Kelly is still breathing though.
I've always liked his style, and he played with the big boys when he was young, so he counts.
