Russia Secretly Offered Afghan Militants Bounties to Kill U.S. Troops, Intelligence Says

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/26/us/politics/russia-afghanistan-bounti...

While Trump was pushing to get Russia back into the G7...

...and accusing others of treason.

(I'll be nice and not post the meme of T with Putins sperm all over his face)

"Intelligence" is not a credible source.

#TRE45ON...

But cmon ....Obama... they took notes! It’s indisputable!

Vlad and Don got some explaining to do...

ive heard several criticisms of this worded as; "trump knew and he did nothing"

in this case, what does "doing something" look like, aside from 100% packing up and leaving afghanistan?

>>>in this case, what does "doing something" look like

Well is sure as hell doesn't look like publicly stating that Russia should be let back into the G7 after they were kicked out by Obama for invading Ukraine and taking Crimea.

why not? if we are having strained relations with another country shouldnt we take every possible opportunity for talk and diplomacy?

I’m sorry, talk and diplomacy are not even in this administrations vocabulary

They paid bounties to kill Americans that isn't a strained relationship. Also sure a negotiation would be great, but that isn't what happened Trump just announced they should be let back in. There was never any - hey stop killing our soldiers and we will let you back in. That would be an actual negotiation.

i thought he did ok w north korea at the end of the day, but at the same time, he was the one who caused rising tensions via twitter, and n korea/kim jong un is a special case for trump...they are both eccentric despots, but otherwise i agree with that

so if talk and diplomacy are outside the realm of possibility for trump and the neocons that surround him, isnt doing nothing the better option here? i cant think of a scenario in which "taking action" or "doing something", as the neoliberal/DNC establishment seems to suggest by criticizing him for "doing nothing", does not entail some kind of military action or escalation of tensions with russia?

obviously the best option is to take action by packing up and 100% withdrawing from afghanistan and diverting a large amount of the military budget in afghanistan to international humanitarian aid groups, but if that isnt on the table, and trump is to incompetent for serious peace negotiations, then isnt doing nothing the next best thing if your goal is to avoid more war/killing and descalate international tensions with nuclear armed countries?

Larry, I'd say you know nuthing at all about wtf is going on in the geo-political world, but that my friend would be a gross understatement.

You n stump can start by looking up the meaning of the word -  Adversary

You dont reward bad behavior buddy, only stump tries to.  Kim n Putin, real bad guys, who shouldn't get the time if day from the US, yet stump fucking idolizes. He'd love to be able to silence critics by offing them.

This may be a big fuckin story. Stay tuned

i agree with that - i dont want to be buddies with any nation that has a totalitarian government that represses its people, and that includes everything from fascist nationalist governments on the right like brazil and arguably russia, religious totalitarianism in the muslim world, and totalitarian socialist/communist states like north korea and china.

but just as much as i dont want to be buddies with them, i dont want any kind of military engagement - i think we need to take a much more serious look at why governments like north korea and russia are a threat to us and why they are doing some of the morally questionable or outright immoral things they are doing - i dont really believe the old movie trope of a supervillian bent on world domination really exists to the point that some kind of peace cant be achieved between the USA and governments we disagree with or condemn...how much of what we view as threats to the USA perpetrated by these countries is in response to, or a preemptive strike against, the nearly 100 year long US imperialist hedgemony around the globe, and the CIA's long murderous history of covert government overthrow by violent CIA trained militant groups who install dictators friendly to US corporate and financial interest?

how many of these perceived threats to the USA could be avoided by sitting down with the major leaders of the world, and acknowledging that yes, the USA for decades has perpetrated violence, murder, terrorism, and covert operations that subvert national sovereignty in a bid to reshape the world in a way that is friendly to US corporations, financial institutions and the bipartisan ruling elite, apologizing for it, and promising the US will take a new path forward that respects national sovereignty in all nations?

id guess that russia is taking some pages out of the US playbook and would likely not be deterred from possible aggression by this - i think they want to step on to the world stage much as the US did after WWII to try and shape the world for russia as the US has done for itself...but look at the military numbers and statistics...outside of a massive surprise nuclear assault, russia does not have the military power to wage a direct war on us - so they meddle in the middle east, and try to keep us there embroiled in proxy wars. we are only suffering and becoming weaker by allowing ourselves to play into these proxy wars and continue to dump money into an unwinabble military campaign with no real end goal in sight.

but for somewhere like north korea? that might end alot of military flexing by the dprk...you think they want nukes because kim is some supervillian out of a movie? they have seen what happens to places like libya who agree to get rid of their nukes on the condition their national sovereignty is respected...and then are promptly invaded and overthrown when the nuclear programs are shut down. now libya is a total failed state, which isnt to say it was good before, but what gives us the right to tell other countries how to govern or how they should be governed?

ditto for muslim extremists - you think they just want to perpetrate terror against the US because "they hate our freedom" or some shit like that? no way, its a response to US/western imperialism in the middle east going all the way back to the sykes picot agreement in 1916 during WW1

Maybe these various regimes just want power, money, land, resources.

Same as it ever was.
