I'm going to a show!

Forums:

Tomorrow night, and I'm excited about it.

A couple of hours ago I was trolling around on facebook and saw a post from drummer Scott Amendola saying that he had just agreed to fill in for Dave King (Bad Plus) in a jazz trio that's playing a virtual show tomorrow from Art Boutiki, a cool little club in San Jose.

It sounded like something I'd be interested in at least checking out so I went to the venue website to see about a link for the stream, and I saw that they had limited In-person tickets!

I didn't hesitate, and now, for the first time in well over a year I'm actually going to a show at a local, very cool venue. The trio has two top players - Amendola & bass player Reuben Rogers, who's brilliant, and while I'm not familiar with the piano player John Dryden, if his regular trio has Rogers & Dave King then he's definately a pro.

For whatever reason/s, I haven't been very enthused about going to shows again, but I'm excited for this one, and I'm hope it reminds me of what I've always loved about being in a room with great musicians, and I get fired up to...

GO TO THE SHOW!

Here's the link if anyone is interested in watching the free stream...

So happy for you Lance!

So glad it came around for you, Lance!

I walk the neighborhood in the early evenings and last night a trio was playing on the grass in front of a house a block away. The unmistakable sound of live music was magnetic. 3 guys in their early 20's, a guitar player, a drummer (who's going to Berklee in the fall) and his brother the keyboard guy. I'll never know what that electric keyboard was but it sounded remarkably like Farfisas I heard and loved in the '60s and '70s (first husband played one, among other people). It was a warm evening and some of us were dancing in the street. They played all the songs they knew and ended. Good sounds.

On Sunday I'm going to a winery about 30 minutes out of Eugene to hear my friends, the BrewKats, play for a few hours. It'll be easy to distance there while sitting and dancing, so I'm really looking forward to it. It's starting and the band is so ready to play.

Excellent!

Oh yes, the music on Sunday will be outside on a warm evening with a good selection of friends and wine. Oh, and a barbecue food truck. And they're excellent musicians.

20210528_205821_3.jpgWas fortunate to catch Cubensis tonight 6 miles from my house. Good to see my old friends and they kicked ass.

Mark, you must have missed the Giants/Dodgers game tonight.

Damn.

That was something.

I will never say a bad word about Mike Tauchman after tonight.

Never.

A play for the ages.

GO GIANTS!!!

GO (TO THE) SHOWS!!!

I dvr every game, Tom. Yeah that was an epic play. Just finished watching it. We needed that game.

It's been a long time, hope you remember how to act!

Enjoy

> Cubensis tonight 6 miles from my house

Very cool, Mark. That looks like a really idyllic setting for a show. Where was that?

I was hoping to catch Cubensis at the Mint in LA this Sunday, but tickets sold out in a flash.

At my friends ranch here in Kelseyville, Mike.  Yeah Mint sold out but at least they are playing again.

JGB is absolutely crushing it

^Glad to hear that.

I'm joining Lance tonight.  Well, at least virtually,  The trio (now a quartet) sounds really good and the music fits my mood.

Happy Friday

I'll let Lance tell you who the unexpected guest was...and what Grunge song they performed.  wink

Yeah, that was a good reminder of what I love.

And the guest, Joshua Redman, is a BIG leaguer and was a big surprise, someone who is a major personal favorite who I've often paid five times as much to see & hear as I did tonight. It was a great thrill to see him at the funky, groovy little Art Boutiki tonight.

I was one of 11 people in the audience. THAT was fucking great.

I'm going to very much miss these very sparsely attended events, where I feel like I'm the only one in the place.

And it was very nice to again be drawn to lower my hat over my eyes and let the music flow over me. I'd kind of forgotten what that's like.

A note to Hoover, in case you're reading this... I was very much reminded again tonight that yes, it really does matter if you're in the room or not.

The show was excellent, and even though it was clear that both Redman & Amendola didn't know the music well, it still flowed and jumped and grooved. Great players tend to play great, even when not at their best, but I could definitely see where Dave King would have fit into this music.

Tonight was a really good first foray back into the visceral world of music.

Far out.

GTTS!!!!!!!

Saw Oteil, Tom Guarna, John Kimock and some friends at a Tree of Life house party last night in NJ. Unseasonably chilly but the rains held off and a grate time was had by all. It felt fantastic to be hanging and listening to live music with real people!

Looks like I'm going to some shows, too! Just bought my plane tickets for Hardly Strictly. $!47 round trip for a 800 mile jaunt in just over an hour each way. Damn, couldn't be better.

^Nice!

say hi!

((((MagneticElectricLIVEMUSIC)))))

yay for all of Us who have had the great good fortune of *the return*

last night was my 2nd live show experience since the beforetimes

date night with my Man to a JGB centric band, who were really quite a treat !! sweet venue as well, oh, Judit: the poz show!!!winklaugh

first time out was in pa with one of my dearest friends, which only could have been made better by Alex being there, and was otherwise a justexactlyperfect time, and exactly what i needed to get back into 3d live music...

and here's to the rest of Us to have the opportunity really soon

((((((ZONER JAMS)))))))

Right on, Tom, glad you got to GTTS!  Hopefully we'll get to hang out at a show soon.

I have seen Electric Waste Band three of the last 4 weeks and they are taking their playing to another level. Robert Harvey has been playing a Doug Irwin Guitar that some dude Jason brings to the show with a pick up from Jerry's Tiger guitar. The tone is AWESOME and boogieing to live Grateful Dead music is a joy. The best part is its from 12-3pm and it's free. I recommend this to anyone near San Diego who needs a fix of live music they play at Aquarius Bar & Grill near Sunset Cliffs in Mission Beach .

Tom Ryan in Cubensis is the best Brent clone I have ever heard.

Please direct me to an official announcement...

Can't. Nothing from HSBF but the trip sites all mention it (do a search) and my buddy called me and said it's happening. If not, I get to visit SF for a few days. There's worse ways to spend a weekend.
