I might be moving to Port Chester soon

Forums:

I'm done, beyond bored, done !! with this whole living in the countryside business. At least, I've had enough of it the way I've been doing it -- i.e. constant, 12 months a year for years on fucking end, decades dammit!!, including the last 7 years in this not quite but damn near tumble down shack on a dag-blastedly  beautiful scenic meadow woods rocks, a lovely idyllic fucking slice of bucolic mountain side where I'm supposed to watch the seasons change for entertainment, evidently? Because that's like the most exciting thing happening here, and I could track the seasons precisely with only just a handful of short visits each year - I have it all worked out on a spreadsheet. ;)

OK, I just had to vent a little bit there. Of course I realize I'm bitching about "luxury" problems or, as I guess we call it now in these modern times - first world problems.... but still, they're my problems, they bother me, as I'm sure you understand.

So, hello there all you zonerz, nice to "see" you again -- now tell me, what do y'all think about those co-op apartments on Westchester Avenue, that I see for sale on zillow? (Whatever "for sale" means, whilst referring to co-op apartments in Port Chester.) There are several apartments available - all in a 10-minute walk to the Cap (& thus obviously, Garcia's) - also 10 minute walk to shopping, 10 minute walk to the train station (train to NYC) and I assume there's some sort of restaurant action going on somewhere in the neighborhood. There's got to be more restaurants than where I live now, or at least, they'll be different ones.... not trying to obsess over food, but it would be awesome to live nearby to a few appealing restaurants &/or takeout places.

Now of course, a more obvious dream retirement destination would be San Rafael, but it's farther from my family than I want to live at this time, and I probably can't afford to live in California anyway -- unless maybe if I live in my car, but you know what, somebody stole my car the other night and left it wrecked in a ditch at 2am so I actually don't have a car, guess that means I'm not moving to California right now hmmm? So anyway... I've only been to the Capitol a couple times, maybe 3 (?) lol oh yeah that's right.... at least 3, but it's ... been a while. In any case I'm not familiar with the neighborhood at all, but it kinda looks like a good match. I've been wanting to move for quite a while and circumstances are starting to fall into place for that right around now..... So please,

Tell me, all that you know

What I know so far, is there's thankfully no bowling in the venue; I know they have Jerry hands for city crosswalk signs in central Port Chester....

and a city fire truck with a stealie emblem on it...

What else is there to say about Port Chester?

(if anything )

Thanks in advance for your input :)

Not exactly much to input but I'm gonna first wish you tons of luck, and next go ahead and buy a ton of early stock in this thread.

Sorry about your car !  Nice to see you post.

Been to PC  a handful of times for Phil shows.  The few times I drove,  found parking a block or two off Westchester Ave and got to walk the  neighborhood a bit.  Seemed safe and quiet enough.

Once I  drove from New Hampshire and had my  Dog with me.  The  dog-sitter was about halfway between Cap & the Hilton,  a few blocks off Westchester Ave.  Her neighborhood seemed nice enough,   not crack-town.  Definitely more residential compared to the downtown commercial area,  which is only a few square blocks.

There are a bunch  of interesting  restaurants in  PC.  No doubt you'd get bored after a while,  like any place.

Maybe you should take the train there one day and hike around town to see how you like it ?

If you move to PC I might be able to hook you up with a job at the Cap.

I worked in Port Chester in the mid-late 1990's and revisited as guest of Peter of the Cap 1/2018

People were really nice as always there.

When I was working up there, my friend and I would hop over to pizza place next door. Sicilian for me a chicken slice for him. Afterwards cruise Port Chester smoking huge joints of Jamaican.

High as hell and happy as a clam. Fun town.  The Bronx was very close and made it there and back with in a lunch hour a few times

Or we would work through lunch and jump across the street to a Portuguese deli, with some hart attack sandwiches on a "Port-roll"

I could NOT find an affordable apartment in Port Chester or White Plains at that time and didn't even want to commit to a Co Op. It was not that nice and would not have been happy on those rocks

I was born in Yonkers and shuffled down to LI to grow up. My father worked in Rye for 25 years and we have history up there.

After the JRAD show I got lost for a while and didn't really care. Rye NY is really nice, even at night.  A really nice high-end residential community. 2 minutes from Port Chester.

Rye is pretty,

I lived in Port Chester for 2 years--just moved across the border into Greenwich.  Overall, good quality of living--no major complaints. I always felt very safe as did my wife. Rye is nice bit much more expensive. All of westchester county is expensive compared to the rest of the country--so if you can afford rent, prices of things in port chester are probably a bit below what you will pay in rye or more upscale communities.  Pc is very multicultural, which I enjoyed very much (I lived in NYC for 5 years).

as for the cap, I have not enjoyed going there as much as in previous years. Shows rarely start anywhere near on time--and they just are not as user friendly as they have been in the past.  Used to wait at box office for tixs and last time I was 4th on line and all they had was shitty seats and they gave me a real hard time.

any questions, feel free to e,mail me at [email protected]

Thanks for your insights thus far, lovely zonerz heart

Rye is definitely gorgeous. I think most of Westchester is gorgeous. My grandparents lived in New Rochelle, they took us to Davenport Park a lot when we were kids. Looking at the map, I see that's a good 10 miles south of PC. Guess I thought it was closer...

Also looking at the map, I notice that Port Chester is (like New Rochelle) close to that big bunch of water.... let's see, the name of the city has "Port" in it, but I had to look at a map to notice it's near the water. Haha.

One thing I don't understand is how co-ops work exactly... I've only ever had a straight-up house on a straight-up piece of land that I owned all the way down. (Or, yk, me & the bank but that was it.) Co-ops &/or condos make me uncomfortable, the same way I would feel weird about buying BLM land, or some other weird situation that I don't know anything about.

I'm sure it's different rules in different places, but I've read for example, that you don't actually own any property with a co-op, only "shares" - well, is that anything like mineral rights? or homesteading or being part of a HOA.... j/k but .... luckily I ran into an old friend recently (dancing next to each other at a local GD inspired band) -- she's a RE agent now, she will help me figure it all out.

I'd love to respond to somethings you guys wrote but I need to start packing out this place, I have lots of stuff. Way more than I would bring anywhere, including a barn full of things that others have left here, but whatever. Yard sale time. :P I have to use my energy when it presents itself but I'm sure I'll be relaxing on the internet again before long :)

Have good friends who live in Rye who love it....it's just pricey.   I will say when we fly up to the area we use the HPN airport in whiteplains all the time.   Tickets are super cheap there from ATL for some reason.   But it's a bonus to have a small airport nearby and not have to deal with the major ones.
