I don't want Direct TV

Forums:

Time to turn to the Zone ......again

I love TV. I work my ass off all day and when it is dark outside I love to just sit back and watch the idiot box. I went almost 20 years of my life without a tv or a tv with 2 channels. I watched a lot of Soul Train in the 80's.

I am now an addict to the TV. I have one and my wife has a second. we do not like the same things. Se is a Voice, American Idol, Walking Dead person. I like sports and movies.

What do you all use to watch these shows and others without the $200 a month cable or dish shit???

I have a Ruko that I enjoy movies on but I need my sports. My wife would not even mind if the shows she likes are a day or two later than when they actually air.

Youtube and $10 per month Netflix subscription.  Rabbit ears for football games, PBS, and local news.

If you have a smart TV look into https://www.sling.com/

I'm hoping to find out good ways to watch TV for free or cheap, so I'll be checking in to this thread and see what works in my house.

Have the Netflix and Amazon Prime on Roku.  I used to be able to sign in on my Mom's cable account to watch sports on the computer, but that hasn't been working lately.

Do we need some special kind of antenna for free stations nowadays?  I'm looking forward to catching some World Cup action soon, even in a language that I don't understand.

Thanks,

JD

  • usenet with hashed file names
  • amplified antenna on roof
  • bittorrent
  • Netflix
  • foreign NFL sunday ticket subscription with DNS redirection
  • Amazon prime
  • youtube

I have to admit that watching sports highlights on youtube saves a TON of time, as opposed to seeing the entire game.

Youtube's pretty good for news broadcasts, comedy shows, etc...if you're OK with catching them after the fact.

If you have a modern tv, you don't need the digital decoder box. Just a normal antenna.

I have netflix and hulu subscriptions.. also when i recently bought a new tv, it was internet compatible so all tv services (netflix, hulu, youtube, etc) are already on there so no extra system to have to hook up.

Tim,

I've struggled with this for a few years.  It seems each option is missing one or two key elements (especially as a sports watcher).

Unfortunately after paying too much for comcast we've reverted to uverse.   It's horrible but it's more affordable than the other main options.

I've consider Sling, apple, etc.   At this point we've considered just doing netflix but that won't help come march madness.

I'm in the same boat.  I called DirecTV and told them I was canceling and they put me through to their retention person.  I told her I only needed the networks and a few other popular cable channels (TNT/TBS for hoops, E! for the wife) and that I could get those with Comcast way cheaper.  So they said they could set me up with the basic package, which has those channels plus they could give me some sort of one year loyalty discount ($60 off per month), so my bill is now under $30.00.

For movies and TV series type stuff I went with NetFlix ($11/mo for 2 users).

I watch pro basketball, football and baseball (local teams and playoffs), some Olympic sports, as well as Euro pro cycling (Paris Roubaix is Sunday!) so to supplement what I get on DirecTV, I went with FUBOTV ($28/mo for 2 users) and NBC Sports Gold ($30 per year).  Both have DVR functions and the cycling and endurance ski events have longer coverage and are usually commercial free (3 hours of Paris Roubaix! lol).  FUBO also has the local channel sports channel that covers the Warriors, so I get every game now.

I can also watch those on my work computer or hook up a laptop to any TV that has HDMI, which is nice since there's a ton of stuff available.

I am with you Tim. My GF has terrible taste in TV.

hate it.

been wanting to pull the plug totally.

att package deal but no fiber optic in mi barrio.

the only things i watch on tv are sports and local news barely.

the lady likes all the bs reality shows + all the british bbc channels.

my lakers/dodgers are not part of the sports pack, and are on this bullshit spectrum sports network which is like another $20. no more road games on local tv...

chick wants to dvr her dumb shows.

#annoyed.

Turtle we have spectrum here. Just the last couple of weeks they've been offering their version of streaming. Any 10 channels you want + all your local channels $25/mo. Haven't taken it yet, if they upped it to 15 channels I'd probably take it

I changed to xFinity from Direct when I moved.

Full package/ all movie channels(love movies) and sports/MLB network yadda yadda.

It's pricey for now but I'll be downgrading before the end of the year, Eventually I'll go to one of the internet packages once they have perfected them.

In the meantime - I'll fill up the DVR with as many classic movies as possible that I don't already have on disc.

Try Youtube TV. Its $35ish a month and has espn and lots of others.

thanks hillman will have to check

HDTV Antenna Review: Top Picks From CR's Latest Tests

More cord-cutting consumers are turning to antennas and free over-the-air TV

Over the air antenna for NFL.

Roku - Netflix - YouTube  - Done.

Paging Ender: Please tell me more about the foreign subscription to NFL Sunday Ticket.

NFL Sunday Ticket sucks because you have to get Direct TV.

Some people are exempt from having to get Direct TV because they live in an area where DirectTV isn't available. They can get streaming Sunday Ticket for $280 last season. You don't get your local games and you don't get Sunday night, Monday night or Thursday night games or the Playoffs.

If you subscribe to NFL Gamepass as a foreigner, you get every game and the playoffs with no regional blackouts.  Plus Redzone channel too. Plus game replays all season. Several years ago you could do this for free by pretending you were in Nordic countries. Then it was $99. I think I paid ~$200 last year. But it's nice to be able to turn it on and know I can see any game I want.

There are free DNS redirection services, but I use unotelly and pay $12.95 for a football seasons worth of service (Unblock-Us is also a good one). You can also use these services to watch "foreign netflix". There is different Netflix content for each country, so it's like getting 10x the content from Netflix. There are sites to help you find out which country has which movie. Then you just click over to that country and go to netflix. You cat set up DNS redirection at the router or device level.

If you don't want to pay any money or mess with this crap, you can always find free HD NFL streams here: https://www.reddit.com/r/nflstreams/

I Pay 55 a Mo for Everything Spectrum TV = Fine with that One Stop Shop

What Hall Has Would Send Me To Excedrine Migraine

I use the FireTV. This has the advantage over Roku (I have one of these too for the bedroom tv) Because you can download Kodi

Kodi puts a ton of media at your fingertips I even get channel 12 local news , Then I pay $35 a month for Direct TV Now with HBO. They have the channel lineup I like... Sling's app is better but they didn't have the channel lineup. You should look at Playstation TV / Youtube TV ,Sling , and Hulu  see who has the channel lineup you want. all told I pay for internet $65 and $35 for direct TV now no box fees etc saves me a little over $100 a month

Antenna reception is no good in my town so that is not an option otherwise I wud just do antenna Fire TV .. I can nt stress how much better Fire TV is Than Roku Kodi is great !! I have already watched Jumanji, Star Wars , The justice league thor etc.. Still waiting for a good quality Black Panther but it will be on Kodi before it goes to DVD and you can watch most shows the next day Free

Uncle Kodi has killed some time in my household. Big fan!

Until the Amazon tariffs

My sister swears by showbox. New movies & current tv shows are on it. She's been trying to get me to download  it but i just don't care enough to bother with it

You are pretty much covered between streaming movie sites (putlocker), netflix, redditt sport streams, and torrent.

And you can buy a lot of subscription services on ebay.  Just bought mlb.tv for the season for $7.
