Here is my latest bass in the arsenal of bottom end...a Carvin kiesel custom, 5 string bass...Active EQ, coil tap for the humbucker in the bridge position...
beautiful sounding bass....rich bottom end and lots of mid and high end sound....took me awhile to get used to the whole five string thing, but now I love it...
I own and play a Modulus Q5, a Modulus Bassstar Vintage Fretless, a Fender Dlx J Bass and a vintage '54 Kay upright.
Clearly, I have no need for another bass - but last week I found a crazy and remarkable deal on a bass I couldn't pass up...
A Fender Squire VM lined fretless bass, based on the legendary Jaco Pastorious "bass of doom" fretless.
It was being sold by some naive young dope for just $60.
I had to chuckle when I replaced the stock round wounds with D'Addario black tape wounds.
The replacement strings cost just a tad more than half of what I paid for the bass.
It plays like buttah!
Indonesian and it has a great neck profile.... If ony every guitar just cost $60!
Here is my Q5:
And my Mod Bassstar Fretless w NOS body (both of these were put together by Rich Hoeg in SF...
Incidentally - (ZMA) I have a brand new Grateful Dead Band in San Francisco, started by my 19 yr old son Stu and some his college aged pals - with me (Grampa) Ted on bass.
We have a gig at the Ocean Ale House on Sunday Afternoon, March 25 in a fundraiser for Tom Murphy's efforts to fund Jerry Garcia Day at the Jerry Garica Amphitheater in McLaren Park in August of '18.
The band has been named by these kids. They have named it, "Ted & Company!"
Congrats on that Beauty! There are some really nice ones in this thread. I was going to post my new bass when I got it back in September but I never got around to it. So I guess I'll post it here. It is the nicest thing I have ever purchased, hands-down. I had it custom made and I spec'd it out all myself. Absoulutely flawless instrument. I could not be more happy.
Here She is:
Modulus Quantum 5 - Figured Walnut Top - Alder Body- Satin Finish Body - 34" Scale, 26 Frets - Phenolic Fretboard - Side Dot Inlays - TOP DOT INLAYS - Satin Finish Neck - EMG Soapbar Style Pickups - EMG 3 Band Preamp - Black Hardware - **Old School Snowflake Logo On Headstock**- Modulus Res-O-Lite Tuning Keys - Hipshot A Style Bridge - 17mm string spacing - **Wood Knobs For EMG 3 Band**
Thanks Hoov...aren't you the one that bought the tele B bender?...remember talking about that...thought it was you....the Modulus...that's my dream bass...I dont think I can do a 6 string my hands are too small I think...the five is a stretch..much wider neck..But love the modulus basses and clearly that is my end game in time...now I am going to concentrate on the rig..Amp / speaker config...
I'd be interested in seeing what amps you play your bass with?
I play with a San Francisco based rock band called Fog Swamp that plays originals influenced by bands like the Meters, Neville's, Taj Mahal, Dylan, Stones.
For electric gigs I mostly play my Q5, and sometimes my fretless when a song calls for it > Effects Rig > Felix pre-amp > Genz Benz NeoPak > Eden D15 & 210XLT Cabs.
This rig is super fat sounding and I rarely need to turn the volume beyond half way. Big round piano tones...

Kool basses.
Kool basses.
I did not realize until moments ago that Kiesel bought Carvin's instrument line back a few years ago.
Always thought they had an interesting approach to business, 'direct-to-consumer'.
So Treble, is your Squier China, Korea, Indonesia ??
I like the necks on my Indo Squier strats.
