Humboldt kayak fishing adventures [[[fish porn]]]

Forums:

I had an awesome day at Shelter Cove this last Monday.  I caught a nice male chinook salmon pushing 25lbs and a limit (2) of thresher sharks that were 8ft+ each.  The fork lengths were 49" and 51" which calculates to 78lbs and 87lbs.  It has been a decent salmon for kayakers here and slower and smaller fish for most powerboaters. IMG_20180725_5252.jpgIMG_20180725_21353.jpg

Dang, nice catch!

Awesome Rob ! your Fish Porn is Always yesyes

Sweet catches. I would probably freak out if I caught a shark while in my kayak.

While I’ve become more of a bass fisherman as I’ve gotten older and spend more time in Florida and on lakes in the mountains, I just got back from fly fishing in Missoula. Fishing was spotty at best. Probably due to the excessive flooding this spring and current hot weather. Still a beautiful trip. Great wildlife. Saw a moose and her calf, a mink and at least 10 bald eagles.

Wow, Rob, nice fishing!

Is the fork what looks like a tail to me? And those are such beautiful salmon! Thanks for the pics.

Cool catch photos

Thanks for that Rob.

AWESOME day of fishing Rob!

you, sir, are da kayak-fishin' MAN

^^^Judit, I think the "fork length" referred to in the first post is the length from the snout of the fish to the fork in the tail, which in the case of the thresher shark is the "V" between the small lower projection of the tail, and the humongous upper lobe of the tail. In the 3rd photo, the shark on the right clearly shows the "V"in the tail that I'm referring to.

Thanks, Mr. Fish. It sounds like a unique measurement.

^^^ Judit, it's really not a unique measurement for fish. Nearly all fish have a fork in the tail, and measuring their "fork length" is a standard measurement... it is considered a more reliable metric than "total length" because the tips of a fish's tail can often become abraded or partially worn off. Hope you get my drift here... it's standard stuff for us "fish heads," lol.

Got your drift, Gary. It makes sense.

What do you do with a dead thresher shark?

Does one eat it?

I love the proud cat saying "thats my human!"

Thresher shark meat is very good table fare.  Its sometimes similar to swordfish, but better.  The fish have small mouths and aren't that old.

Have a question, once you land one of these larger fish and want to keep fishing, do you strap them to your kayak or drag them along?  I'd think that sharks and others might hit any that you dragged along, but I don't know, how does that work?

This mighty fisherperson will be surf casting for surf perch and whatever else is at Dillon Beach this weekend.  Going the custy way with Berkly Gulp and a Carolina rig.  I was inspired from seeing a guy with a swimbait on a jighead surf casting near Moss Landing last weekend. If nothing else, I call it casting meditation.

Don't wade out too far - Dillon Beach is Great White Central.

shark bait

Nice catch there Matanaska and thanks for sharing the photos !!

My question is when you have hooked a 75-90 lb. Shark,  and have reeled it near the kayak,  how do you render it docile enough to not be a threat ?

Do you gaff it,  stick a long needle through the head,  shoot it with a .22 ??

I suppose being in CA,  you're probably not allowed to have a small pistol while fishing.

Thanks for that surfdead.

Killing those sharks is unnecessary and fucked up.

^^^^^^^^^ Think before you type ^^^^^^^^^^^

He said they are good to eat. Catch fish/shark clean and eat. Any other asshole off the cuff comments???????? Jerkface

I've eaten shark quite a bit, as he said, similar to swordfish.

Maybe you didn’t know but JR has been winged.  You shouldn’t talk to him like that.

Nice looking fishes.  That cat must be eating well.

Could care less what that meat head has to say to me.

Good job Rob!  Did you see Catch and Lois while you were there?

Yesterday's catch.  Pacific halibut and petrale sole.
