How much to negotiate on a car sale?

Forums:

OR...better said...how much to expect from a negotiation.

While we were on vacation a branch fell on my car and totaled it.   Turns out, I'm in the market for a new car.   Who knew?

Typically I try to get a couple thousand off when negotiating on car but does anyone have insight on how much of a mark up a dealer makes and where I can push to?

I'm looking at a car that's 27k (used).   Is 2500 realistic off that price?   I have no doubt I can get 1500 or 2000.

Thoughts?  Wisdom?  Madness?

Offer $500 over factory invoice and start from there.

Ask to see invoice on a new car. any good dealer will sell to you for $1 over invoice

True Car will give you confidence. It will tell you what cars actually sell for in your area and what's a good deal.

Used cars it's a crap shoot. The dealer paid ?? at auction then have any maintenance repairs they did to make them feel good selling it plus reconditioning cost.

More than likely they might have $2000 in profit in the car.

Ask how long it's been on the lot.

Only way a dealer really has a TON of profit in the vehicle is if they ripped off someone on the trade in price.

Can I get a factory invoice on a used car?

How likely are they willing to share it?

Thanks Ender, Will check it out.

No invoices on used cars. Unless the make is the same as the dealer. IE when I sold Chevy's we could print the original invoice for a Chevy. But that will not give you much for what they are asking for it. Use KBB for that

If buying new, i'd go to the makers site and literally build the vehicle, so you know what all the options are, and their general price.  If they have it in the lot, they'll sometimes add those extra features to negotiate with.  If used, make sure you research what the general auction prices are.  They offered me exactly what the auction price was on the vehicle I was trading in (even though it had more extras), so I got them to throw in a bedding treatment for the truck I was negotiating for as the "bonus"....   otherwise, $ went exactly as the books had it.  Ended up with a $42k list truck for $30k (new), and many extra features (since it was on the lot, not the color I wanted, etc).  There were used trucks with less features on the lot going for more than what I paid...

Noodler is there a place to see those auction numbers that you recommend?

damn you need to be a member

no worries.    I've done my research, prepared for battle, just want to know if there was any insight.

Thanks for the help everyone.

two thousand? -   good luck

Various web sites - Truecar, KBB, etc. - will show you the average price in your area for the new or used vehicle of your choice, with whatever options you select.

27 K ? ___ I Could Easily Find  2  Nice Rides at That Price --- Really _ Keep On Ridin.

Totally depends on the dealer. 6 yrs ago I got a 2004 Ranger 4x4 knocked down from the dealer asking price of $8K to $6K. I had cash on me for that one. Last year we bought a 2013 Honda CRV. Asking price was $19K and they would not budge on the price. I even tried the " well I think we'll go look at other options" trick and their response was pretty much "go ahead". And that's with perfect credit...
