2016... started reading the old zone as a lurker, then created an account before the transition to Viva URL.

2006.

For a year or so prior I had been aware of the site, using it to look at setlists, but I knew nothing about discussion boards and I never looked at anything else.

At the second night of the Warfield shows with Scofield in '06 I was watching the crowd because I was bored with the music, and I really began noticing how young so many were. I was by myself that night and I became kind of fascinated... "Who the hell are these people?"

I especially focused on that during the really long setbreak (thanks to Yossarian) so the next time I looked at the zone I started clicking on other folders, stumbled upon Other Stuff and away I went.

It took me a while to get the hang of the rhythm and tone of the place, but I liked the snark and lack of hippy-dippy fairly dust & pixie wings attitude, and I enjoyed starting to see the characters develop in my mind. Plus, people were funny.

Early on I engaged mostly in the sports folder, where (like Other Stuff) things ran the gamut of rational discussion, pure arrogance, trolling and complete idiocy (2dankdan!) with the common theme of humor running through it all.

It was my kinda' canvas.

I may have been lurking before but I met these Phil Zone guys in person when my buddy and I did the lightshow for a Zone sponsored event in 2000 celebrating the life of Terence McKenna. Nice folks.

For me it's like the Encyclopedia Britannica meets a Freak Bros comic book. Found in a bookmobile. (Or a literary version of a group Etch-a-Sketch.)

My only social media. Didn't post much until it was a "participate-or-it-will-wither-away situation."

At some point, there was a crash or incident. Can't even recall if that was on the original or Viva? Some folks' data was lost. So the listed join dates are only accurate in some cases. 

It was cool out of the gate. Then, imo, it devolved into classic net forum madness, at least on Other Stuff. As it shrank, it seemed like the riff-raff, malcontents, shit stirrers, and deranged got sorted out one way or the other. Now it's just beautiful people.

22 yrs this month. 

But I stayed mostly in the HepC Folder the first few yrs.  Can't tell you how much I owe that place and those people.

have made many life-long friendships thru Other Stuff

IIRC, I was lurking in the early 2000's, mostly to find out when Phil was playing.  What I really remember was the December '04 Warfield run.  For whatever reason we only attended Sunday the 19th, but tapers came through for us.  I downloaded and burned disks of the first night, which we played in the car on the ride in on Sunday.  And on Saturday, someone (TaperRob?) livestreamed and we listened on the stereo at home, thanks to a link provided on the Zone.  Shades of things to come..

"Live at 7th Note Showclub on 2000-12-15"

I was at that show. Very spacey and trance-like. It was billed as Lost at Last featuring Phil Lesh (not Phil and Friends). I am trying to remember the venue as the name "7th Note Showclub" rings zero bells. It was definitely on Columbus Avenue. I was thinking maybe the space formerly Wolfgang's, now Cobb's Comedy Club... It seemed configured differently though, a small room with a low stage. I stood up at the front and it was an early encounter with the hoodie mafia who told me I couldn't stand there, but I told them actually I could. I  was thinking and am telling those people were not particularly chill or trance-like. This was my second time seeing Phil post Grateful Dead (first being 10-09-99) and it was fine to see him play ten feet away.

Being out of touch since the GD Orlando Riot, I faded away into parenthood. Late 00 or early 01 Phil announces a show in Orlando. I had someone with more internet skills download me a show from NJ from the Dylan tour. I think Dereck was a fill in, but from the opening of Get Together I heard the dragon breathe again, slow, methodical, building, and then Phil sings, and that's all it took. About the same time I found the old PZ. I did not post for years, but I was sucked into something pretty entertaining, what an enlightening shitshow it was. Scored tickets for 4/15/01, and I was off hitting every Phil or Ratdog in the state from then on. Met a few zoners along the way, Popi, Poz, Betsy, Earl and Portland Ken.

Early 2000's - must have been '02 or '03

2009 after those first Furthur shows at the Fox. The energy was just off the hook at those shows and I thought at the time this was the new beginning we needed. It was the first time since 1990 that I cared about looking up set lists again and that is how I found the zone.

Yes. The space that has long been Cobb's Comedy Club. Before that it was Bill Graham's club Wolfgang's. I saw the Dinosaurs play there in January 1984 (great show), and attended the Night of the Living Deadheads event there in 1986, when Jerry was recovering from his diabetic coma, and we didn't know if he was coming back, or not. It was a foreshadowing that the music and our scene would continue, even after the band was gone. They showed a video of Jerry looking frail, but alive, which was the first we had seen of him since he got sick. To our great joy, he came back strong in 1987 and we had some more years of peak Grateful Dead ahead.

Right before my first Phil show without the GD, which was right before a guy in the restroom at The Boulevard Cafe told me Kimock bailed, which come to think of it, was right before we were standing in a long, slow-moving line outside UIC Pavilion, hearing St. Stephen blasting from inside, a guard saying, "It's just the opening act."

2004 is the answer to when I found the old PZ and jumped on the Hep-C thread. I became glued to it every night during those old-school grueling treatment days, as it was a place for much needed empathy for those of us going through that. It sucked and didn't work for me until a few years later when modern medicine came through with "Harvoni", that wiped it out in 12 weeks. A couple of my old buddies from that board are still around, but they can ID themselves if they'd like. I eventually waded into Other Stuff, as I was still going to a lot of shows during the P + F/Ratdog/Furthur era, and the PZ was/is a great place for info.

I've had the pleasure of meeting many cool Zoner's along the way, but here's the most bizarre one. I was on the floor at MSG for Furthur around 2010, and had an aisle seat. I'm 6'3" and cognizant of peep's behind me being able to see in that floor situation. I turned to speak to the guy for a second who was maybe 5'9", and it was "Northernlites" (RIP) who's name I believe was Chris, who used to post here. What are the chances?!? He was also very cool.

I'll be 73 in a few month's, ride my bicycle 5 days a week, generally feel pretty good (I think some aches and pains are mandatory just for makin' it this far) and have been LOVING every minute of not having a job for almost 4 years now.

Back in 2002 I was at grooving at The Stud on Folsom Street and in the bathroom stall was scrawled "For hot, casual steamy encounters, find your way to philzone.com". Color me intrigued. 

That offering appears to have been a heartless ruse but I've stuck around for kicks.

Same here, I was looking for setlists.
I don't think I stumbled upon Other Stuff until a few months later, lol.
By the time I saw shows on the first Q tour in Oct '00, I was all in.
Lots of CD trading and hours spent on ridiculous banter.
Met some lifelong friends, and some fuckin wierdos. Often both at the same time.

Went to a Ratdog show at the Fillmore in October, 2000. Later asked a taper friend (Klondike) about getting a recording and he suggested I do an ISO on the Ratdog board and the Phil Zone. 

So I'll guess 2001 or so. I was a volunteer programmer (DJ) on a community station and really got into the BnP's and trading and bringing recent live shows to listeners. Now I'm sitting on zillions of CDs.  

I found PhilZone in 2005 for Hep C  information and support for Greg. We had been into GD since the 1960's, and really liked Phil, so when Google showed Phil's recent history I came around looking for more info. Look what I found! The folks in the Hep C folder were exactly who they were. Greg never got the internet, but I did and we got a lot of information and received and gave a lot of support.

Way longer than I care to admit. I might be around since about the beginning. Not even sure when that was anymore.

Addendum to my earlier post. I was looking for info.  I knew Phil had hepC, so I googled HepC and Phil Lesh.  And Wallah! The rest is history. 

I came on board shortly after the Kona affair.

Getting pinned is a BIG deal, and its a huge thing. If its done right, its planned in advance and its a huge surprise to the kid in question.

My pinning was a huge deal, and happened the night after 10k after everyone left and our kids got permission to stay on the land for a few days and clean up before we left for yellowstone and glacier during the off days between 10k and seattle. Camp was kicking, a few off our kids where in the kitchen getting dinner ready, some kids where getting the fire started, and me and dawn and few others where out on a groundscore mission. This was just after the sun went down, we where walking up to camp (camp goodness sponsered by cookies, that is!!!) when 7-8 of our kids are walking towards me with this distinct look on their face. Now, about my actual pinning... Catch me in the real world sometime, ill tell you over a bowl, but something like that is just to personal to discuss over the internet. Lets just say it was special. I will say this, after i got pinned, dawn gives me this huge kiss and is like "baby you deserved that."

uge family dinner, and after dinner a sheet was put in a bottle of orange juice and everyone was ceremonially dropped by the Rev.

i guess in a way, i was baptized into the zone via these kinds of copypasta-esque memes. 

i started really getting into the dead after a near-religious experience at phils 70th b-day show, and pretty quickly found the zone while reading/learning about GD related stuff online. i didnt make an account right away and was just reading thru threads for a little bit. after phils 70th i went to furthur fest and ended up camping next to a group with a big deep frier selling all kinds of deep fried foods. by the second day i noticed they had added a "deep fry anything you bring us" option, and by the third day, in an apparent act of desperation to save their failing parking lot deep frier operation, added a sign that said "motorboat my girlfriend’s tits - $5".

when i got home i started to notice people on the zone talking about it, watched the motorboat meme be born, and i guess i decided these were truly my people and made an account. 

Phil's 70th was epic.

Summer of 1999. I was trying to locate setlists for the Summer Sessions tour (I think that's what it was called) and stumbled on the Zone. Used the Live Chat feature a bit that summer too to get info about tour (I was living overseas that summer).

2012.  Lurked for a bit prior, primary the show and ticket boards. Other Stuff was a little nutty, I didn't think I'd fit in.  I started posting after I was displaced by Superstorm Sandy and my dog was diagnosed with brain cancer. I needed a distraction from my situation and found I fit in better than I imagined. 

Good to see you, Earl. I came here for the Hep C folder also. Mark and Judit. That place was a life saver for sure.

Somehow it seem's like a long time ago now... just glad to "see" you kidz around.

I don't remember when or how but this community was a light in the darkness when life was throwing some big challenges my way. I love you all for that.

Yeah, Phil's 70th in March and Mountain Aire in May were loads of fun!  Wasn't there supposed to be a Mtn. Aire video.......?

the mtn aire video was a long saga that was obviously not coming to fruition looooong before that dude stopped posting and hyping it up. i dont remember the guys username tho but iirc it became a meme within the year. 

TBH the only set from furthur fest truly worth revisiting was the opening night's "soundcheck" set that was just one huge super jammed out 2+ hour set where they mostly just threw together all of the big jam numbers that wouldnt be played during their album sets into one huge chunk of music. one of furthur's best that i was able to attend, along with phils 70th, outside lands and NYE 2011-2012. IMO those 4 shows were more or less the peak of what that band was capable of. 

The 70th birthday was one of a very few post Jerry shows that was better than many of the with Jerry shows I saw.
