I've been hearing we are going to be sheltered in place until July in California. Then this got published today.
Jeffrey Smith, a Santa Clara County executive officer told the county's board of supervisors on Tuesday that some social distancing policies should remain in place after the county's shelter-in-place order is lifted.
Activities such as sporting events may not return "until at least Thanksgiving,"

How long? About 15-18 months,
How long? About 15-18 months, realistically, until it is safe to gather in large groups again. Not sure what politicians and businesses will do, but the scientific community expects a public safety problem for longer than most people think. Large scale events won't be safe from covid until late summer 2021. It take approx.12-18 months minimum for 60%+ herd immunity and/or a vaccine to be developed, tested mass manufactured and widely distributed. Until then, it is a world of uncontrolled contagions. Gov't and business will ease restrictions long before doctors and scientists believe it is really safe. Add 6-12 months to whenever your gov't and business leaders say everything is cool.

This article explains how a combination of increased testing and contact tracing will work. If this can be effectively done, we should be able to reopen society much faster.

reasonable post Mr Tofu..
reasonable post Mr Tofu..
I am curious what the definition of a large group / large scale event is.... Fillmore. >> Txr >> smaller club??? I fo need music - and it must be LIVE
I do hope that a vaccines comes within a miraculously fast 9 months ( what is that mammas and pappas song ... California dreaming...)
I will say that Iam very grateful for the Santa Clara County, and California leadership, and by in large the behavior and cooperation of the citizens ( i do not respect the panic shopping and hoarding however) It is kind of surreal here - much quieter, calmer, and people passing on the street ( at a safe distance actually often smile!! - reminds me of neighborhoods in the olden days like the 60s....
the national leadership could not really be any worse - it is so sad I can not sing one of my favorite Bowie songs anymore - not proud to be an American
and the wealth inequity in this country is mind boggling >>and the poorer people have way worse odds of staying alive through this pandemic perhaps we will improve our public health care >>big money and big pharma must be constrained
all of you stay safe, and be well. PLEASE !

As LLTD said, not to hijack the thread but I found an article about how things may be... it's not fact-checked but the article raises interesting ideas about what may happen as we attempt to get things going again.
Prepare for the Ultimate Gaslighting
Pretty soon, as the country begins to figure out how we “open back up” and move forward, very powerful forces will try to convince us all to get back to normal. This never happened. We were just on pause. Billions of dollars will be spent in advertising, messaging, and television and media content to make you feel comfortable again. It will come in the traditional forms — a billboard here, a hundred commercials there — and in new-media forms — a 2020–2021 generation of memes to remind you that what you want again is normalcy. In truth, you want the feeling of normalcy, and we all want it. We want desperately to feel good again, to get back to the routines of life, to not lay in bed at night wondering how we’re going to afford our rent and bills, to not wake to an endless scroll of human tragedy on our phones, to have a cup of perfectly brewed coffee and simply leave the house for work. The need for comfort will be real, and it will be strong. And every brand in America will come to your rescue, dear consumer, to help take away that darkness and get life back to the way it was before the crisis. I urge you to be well aware of what is coming.
