How do you eat the thinner outer portions of a fried egg?

I'll often cut it away from the "main part" of the egg with a spatula and eat it right there and then. 

Why dont you try frying the egg a little better?

I often warm up a Chicken Egg and mix it up in Hüsky's  bowl of Tasty Food.  Not too thoroughly cooked,  but warmed - up.

He seems to enjoy that.  Actually,  he kills Chickens,  if given the chance.

Really,  I don't encourage H.I.M. to kill any Chickens.  That's not a behaviour which is acceptable.  But I can't raise any around here,  because there are 24/7 Chicken Predators in the local wildlife scene.

We have Foxes,  Hawks,  Raccoons,  Owls,  and Coyottes.

They kill Chickens all day.  Hüsky can't do as much damage compared to Mother Nature.

A properly fried egg shouldn't really have those crispy edges, I think they can be avoided by keep the egg together in the pan as much as possible and keeping it all in a nice, compact, round fried egg shape.

Having said that, I would normally just take my fork (or spoon, or spork, as the case may be), and cut a piece of egg with a good distribution of crispy edge and inner whiteness, and then just eat it. I feel like that's kind of a no-brainer, though. 

that is my fave part..i can eat an omelet created solely of crispy edge every day !

Yeah, I agree ... although wasn't necessarily referring to it being crispy.

Said thinner portion - when not "burnt" - is often tastier than the rest of the egg white ...  I believe b/c has more relative surface area that is in contact with butter. 

So, aside from it being dimensionally a bit more cumbersome to place on an English muffin so it fits neatly, I think it's a bit of a "waste" (taste-wise) to not eat it directly.

I actually just watched the episode of Little House when Laura adopts a baby raccoon (Jasper) .... and along the lines you've alluded to, learns about the difference between "domesticated" & "wild" animals.

I fold the egg over a bit with my fork and do some minor chopping until the egg is a mix of chunks.

This thread is blowing my mind.

Cook at a lower temp to get rid of the crispy, and do not smoke pot before hand, and forget to keep your eye on what you are cooking.

Pass.  A fried egg is like a mistake.  Both parts suck, and one may be illegal in your state.

I love runny yolks and crispy/frilly whites. This is accomplished by adding the eggs to a pan with hot butter (browned is fine) in it and frying them til I consider them done. I put them on one side of a bowl of oatmeal with yogurt in it, frozen blueberries on the other side, and eat the white first, then the yolks, never mixing the eggs with the blueberries since I don't like sweet eggs. I've made this every morning that I'm not traveling since February of 2004.

it's my fav part yes sizzle that egg edge.

I would cut that thin part away from the two eggs and eat right away. 

I hate runny yolks. I like them in that jelly-like stage just before they get firm. Because it's difficult to hit that sweet spot I usually prefer my eggs poached or scrambled, or maybe omeletted.

Sunny side up is the only way to go, for me, but I would never put fruit or sweet stuff on my plate with my eggs. That's a very American thing that I could never really dig on. Like when I see maple syrup running all over pancakes onto the eggs, it just makes me want to scream out....laugh

Those are some good lookin eggs you've got cookin judit, but I'd have to go along with javs ...  I like a "strict firewall" between eggs && sweet stuff ... the latter of which should preferably be on its own plate.  Likewise, I'd never start on a "side" of pancakes until all other non-sweet food has been finished. 

I agree about sweet stuff and eggs; the berries and eggs are never on my spoon at the same time.

Two drops of Original Louisiana Hot Sauce per egg.  Easy peasy.

Fabes nailed it.  I have ruined many a meal.   "Uh, am I cooking something?  Smells bad, I better check.  OH SHIT!!!"

I usually start with onions and serranos in butter. Sometimes some uncured bacon or organic chicken sausage. Sometimes spinach. Always cheese. But all scrambled together. With sourdough toast.  Tangerine on the side.

Or I will start by frying some potatoes and onions. When they are nice and caramelized, add eggs and cheese.

Can't remember when I had my last fried egg alone.

Taking it a step further, I'd love to see a breakfast joint offer to bring out the "side" of pancakes about 5 minutes after main course of eggs and such

Google it, Mark. There is often some loss of nutritive quality in fresh produce as compared to frozen. Fresh is often picked before ripe so it can hold shape during processing and shipping, and so it can ripen on the way to market. It is rare that frozen fruit/veggies have lost quality because they are processed quickly, especially the Oregon brand that I get (Stahlbush). I'm not saying that fresh isn't good, I'm saying that quality organic or sustainable frozen can be at least as good. Check it out.

me neither, it's been oatmeal every day for at least a couple years now ... although I do change up the mix of oats

My breakfast routine:

16oz cup of hot coffee before anything else!

1 cup shredded wheat with 2% milk

1 hard-boiled egg

1 piece of fruit or vegetable (whatever's around: carrot, apple, pear, blueberries, strawberries).


That's it.  Every single morning.

 

I cook "breakfast for dinner" every Wednesday for the family

One kid gets mushroom & cheddar omelette

The other kid gets rock-hard fried eggs or dry scrambled eggs with cheddar.

Wife either joins the scrambled eggs serving or runny sunny-side up eggs, which is what I prepare for myself.  I slide one or two of those on a bed of wilted spinach and that's about it.

Otherwise, I'll eat just about any style of egg if that's what needs to be done.

Two 20 ounce coffees

and only pistachios, slim Jim's and beef jerky before 6 pm

My neurotic mind knows I have to put the butter on the pancakes now, while they're hot, to get the proper meltage, but in the meantime my toast is cooling, not to mention the hash browns and eggs. Then what? I'm eating my eggs and salty stuff happily, good little bit of hot sauce on there, but in the back of my mind I know the pancakes are cooling down. Should I put syrup on them now? No, cause then they'll get soggy. But room temp syrup on cooling-down pancakes is kinda gross...

I have to go with Judit on the fresh vs frozen. Unless those blueberries are local and in season, you're better off going with frozen. The same goes for almost every fruit and veggie. 

Last week I got some fresh blueberries, which made their way from Chile to Vermont. There's absolutely no way that they have the same nutrient profile as frozen berries that were picked ripe and flash frozen. The antioxidants degrade over time and with exposure to light and oxygen, and they had to be picked at least 2 weeks ago. They don't taste as good, either.

My solution is only order/eat one - either eggs and whatever, or pancakes/French toast.

Then you can concentrate on what you're eating instead of worrying about the other thing.

your frozen hippie foods have a big carbon footprint...

We grow the blueberries organically, pick them when ripe, wash, freeze them on cookie sheets, and then vacuum seal and keep in chest freezer. They are 100% as good as fresh picked when we take them out, even 10 months later. No degradation.

carbon footprint from the freezer and vacuum bags no doubt, but we could also eat for six months from the same freezer off a single 110 outlet. like to think the sweat equity and regenerative cultivation practices help offset this.

I like eggs cooked all ways.

You're not alone.  I think a lot of people are fully aware of the "window of opportunity" re: hot pancakes & and butter / syrup combo.  For that matter, I suspect the "insanity" begins after first cooked pancake hits the plate with more on the way!

The funny thing is, I can probably count on one hand the total number of times in my lifetime that I've ever prepared both eggs and pancakes at home.  It's almost entirely when I go out to eat.

I find the use of the word "concentrate" re: eating interesting ... since it's probably one of the most engrained habits we all possess and we mostly take the "work" involved for granted.   But make no mistake, the next time you go out to eat watch everyone's eyes at the table as the food is being served.   That's when it starts.   Not only does one's own dish get "studied", but most people always steal at least a glance at everyone else's food.  Then watch how everyone begins to "plan their attack" and "make their first move".  Have you ever noticed how it's sometimes more difficult to get that first fork full combination of salad ingredients together than the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and so on?   This is to say nothing about the very old and the very young who might not be able to independently feed themselves.

I'm guessing that the carbon footprint for fruits from Chile is quite a bit higher than frozen berries from local producers.
