No doubt. I live in the mountains between LA and Bakersfield in Kern County and the most dishonorable Kevin McCarthy is the US Representative for this district (I refuse to call him my congressman). Lately, it seems I'm one of few who still wears a mask around town. I needed to go down to the San Fernando Valley the other day and almost everyone there had masks on in public. The difference was clear as red and blue.
We are breaking new case records almost daily. Hospitalizations on the rise. Deaths are climbing too.

There may be some sarcasm in the above. I'm sure you can figure it out.
King County (Seattle) got to move to Phase 2 last Friday when we ducked under the 25 new cases a day per 10,000 residents ratio set as the new standard (it had been 10/10,000). A week later we're back up to 44/10,000. No discussion of shutting back down though. No coincidence that the state sales tax revenue evaporated starting May 25th. Once the state's funding deficit became glaringly obvious, all this high-minded talk from the politicians about decisions being led by science and their looking out for the well-being of the citizens went out the window. At least they are making face masks mandatory statewide starting Friday.
For better or worse, I do not think there will be more/extended lockdowns in any state. Keep yourselves safe and protected as best you can on your own. The half-assed "response" from the current administration has brought the country to a 50-piece patchwork of differing actions with varying results.
Looking for a laugh I started watching the video of that guy from The Daily Show who was interviewing people at the Trump rallies. He was good and it should have been really funny but I couldn't get through more than a couple of minutes of it. It just made me really sad, angry and more than a bit scared to see that there can be so many inconceivably ignorant people in our country.
Having different political beliefs is fine, and there are many ignorant people on The Left and every other side & corner of the spectrum, but holy cow, these Trumpers. Just holy cow.
>>>no way we will have 200,000+ deaths<<<
Are the deaths that are beginning to add up from people who "recovered" but are now dying of heart attacks, strokes and other deadly maladies caused by the virus going to count? If so we'll likely blow right past that number.
The Orange One and his band of flying monkeys won't like that.
There is a segment of idiots here in Vermont who complain that our politicians and our health advisors - especially our Governor (ironically, a Republican) - are taking things too slow in opening up and are acting like "pussies".
Meanwhile - we have one of the lowest per capita amounts of cases and deaths.
Strictly due to hard working healthcare professionals who then have to risk their own lives by going to work and taking care of these worldwide dumb fucks. The ones who believe that some god has anything to do with face masks, viruses, the size of their pp's or anything else they can deflect blame from their own ignorance and onto some sort of diety fuckery are especially entertaining.
Unfortunately, some of these nobel prize winners have been elected to represent us...
I was in very rural Arkansas last week . Northest, 8miles north 9 miles east is Missouri. The county went from one case to thirty three while I was there. Exploding there. My friends wife swabs at the local clinic.
The whole mask "controversy" is just mind-boggling to me. It's an easy decision to make: it probably helps and definitely doesn't hurt, and at least some of your neighbors will be comforted (if nothing else) due to you wearing one.
There is actually no good argument against wearing masks. None.
There are actually some pretty good arguments for some people not wearing masks at all, and for exceptional circumstances when others shouldn't wear a mask. This is from an article discussing Washington's statewide mask ordinance which goes into effect tomorrow:
>>>>>>
As with previous orders, there will be specific exemptions for those who may be adversely impacted by wearing a facial covering. These exemptions include those with certain medical conditions and children under the age of two, who should not wear a face covering. Children aged two, three and four are encouraged, but not required, to wear a face covering in public with the assistance and supervision of an adult.
In addition, individuals may remove face coverings under certain circumstances, including while eating or drinking at a restaurant; while communicating with a person who is Deaf or hard of hearing; and while outdoors in public areas, provided that a distance of six feet is maintained from people who are not members of their household.
By sheer numbers of deaths alone, there is absolutely no comparison between covid and the Spanish flu. None at all. It's just stupid that anyone would even try to compare. The only similarity is that we have to wear masks. Get your head out of your asshole
I am sorry to say that you're an idiot if you believe that. The populations are much higher today and we are witnessing a similar projectory of cases and deaths. Good luck to you.
The Spanish Flu killed 50 million worldwide and 675,000 in the United States.
So far, Covid has killed just under 500,000 people worldwide and just over 120,000 people in the US, so there is a long way to go for Covid to be anywhere nearly as bad as the Spanish Flu. Covid has also killed far less people worldwide than the Avian flu of 1957 (1.4 million) or the Hong Kong Flu of 1968 (1 million). Covid is still a very serious thing, but put in historical context, many prior pandemics were much worse.
Point taken, Ken, but comparing a completed phenomenon with one that's still underway is folly at best. Covid could shrivel up and die tomorrow, or it could keep on trucking for another year or two.
That said, it is kind of interesting to compare the ratio of worldwide and US deaths for the Spanish Flu versus Covid (to date). It looks like the rest of the world has learned a thing or two about pandemics in the last 100 years, but the same doesn't seem to be true for the US.
>>>>interesting to compare the ratio of worldwide and US deaths for the Spanish Flu versus Covid (to date)
Along those same lines, more Americans have died from Covid than than the 1957 Avian Flu or the1968 Hong Kong Flu (about 100,000 US deaths each) even though, worldwide, Covid deaths are still only a fraction of the deaths caused by those two earlier pandemics. So yes, Covid is hitting America much more disproportionately than many historic pandemics.
When I was down in Mexico back in March I was talking with a German dude and was explaining how Americans were probably going to take the lockdown seriously for about a month and a half before they revolt against it and demand that thing open up. I explained how Americans are not patient people and don't like to be told what to do.
Ned, you once again have no idea what you're talking about. The data is very easy to find, guys. You're all fixated on these memes and social media telling you that there's some correlation between covid and the Spanish flu. Most folks on Facebook are living in a completely delusional reality, I've noticed. Very glad to not be on there anymore. Aside from being a pandemic there's really no comparison. I think Spanish flu killed something like 14 mil in a India alone. Again, if we are talking about deaths it's nowhere near that level yet so stop acting like it is or keep going on living in a dream world.
Btw, they did wear masks during the Spanish flu. Only similarity so far. Keep going back to living in fear now
considering your point that the population was less back in 1918 the theratio was far worse for the Spanish flu.
