How Band Loyal Are You ?

Forums:

Judit got me to thinkin' about band loyalty. Have you ever stopped seeing a band you really used to get off on because of, well for any reason ? I dug a lot of bands casually thru the years, like the doobie brothers who I loved till that McDonald fuck ruined em, and the Eagles till Walsh joined and they went straight into the toilet,, but the ones that left their mark on my soul, like The Who, Mclaughlin,  Santana, Mountain, Zappa (dweezil), Dead, (all members, any incarnation), blues n zazz  players, etc,, I'll love and continue to see them (fiances permitting) till my dying day. When did you step out and why ?

I used to go see the Radiators all time in the mid-late 80s, and the 90s.. Once we rolled into the 2000s I got down with every 3rd song or so...stopped trying. Same goes for Little Feat the last 10-15 years.

Stones after I saw them in '78 they began to bore me, saw them in '97 because the woman I was dating had never seen them . Giants Stadium me and 80,000 of my dearest friends , same set they basically play now. Lol it would cost you a lot to get me at another of their shows. Great songs I get it but Some Girls was the last great record imo . Dead related, none after jerry died until 2001 my first plf and that was because of well Phil .

Ah, good times, especially at the annual Fall run of shows at the Great American Music Hall (SF,CA). Same situation with Neville Bros - loved them...who got too old first, them or me?

The Meters / Funky Meters held my interest a little while longer - I'd still go out of my way to see Zigaboo.

There was a lot of venue loyalty too back in the day, certain places just shined.  Back in the 70's we also had a Great American Music Hall, in New Haven. Too many great bands played there over the years to remember. Johnny Winter, Ramones, Mountain, Creek, BOC, NRBQ, James Cotton, whole lotta fun at that place. Was a sad day when it closed.

most recently govt mule comes to mind.  I never got into jorgen and just stopped going to shows and consuming the album releases.  I have no idea what its like to the see the mule these days and back in 98/99 and then again 03-08 I was seeing Govt Mule 5 to 10 times a year on both coasts

I was less enthused about Hot Tuna for a while, but they crushed it the last two times I saw them ('15 & '17).  Jorma may have dropped a step but Jack has picked up two.

That's odd , I'm off Tuna these days. Last saw them in 11/19 and left mid second set, bored . Oh well to each...

Funny second time today I've had this conversation , Buncombe texted raving about a Tuna show he just saw in Chico

I'm pretty sure I have a bad case of Phish addiction. I don't think I've listened to any other music in my car for about 3 or 4 years now. At home I'll switch it up a bit when I get the itch for something different and my wife and kids don't really dig Phish. But man, for my drive to work and back I only want to listen to Phish. I don't give anybody a ride there or back because I don't want to turn down the music. And the thing is, by the time I finish listening to a given tour, they're already playing again. I still haven't listened to the NYE run, and definitely not Mexico yet. I buy all the shows but haven't gotten around to getting those, yet. I'm on my 4th run through Fall Tour, Pittsburgh show right now, which I'm pretty sure was the jewel of that run.

I know. Phish. I'll probably get heavily mocked for that, but man, their music has everything that I want out of music. Solid (usually) playing, different genres, sick jams, a sense of quirky humor. They always try to grow and expand, always exploring new sounds, new emotions. Best fucking band......ever? Sorry, sorry, I know, I know. Feel free to throw rotten eggs at me...

That's happened to me with a few bands over the years, usually because I felt they stopped growing or I just grew tired of what they were doing.

In that way bands like Calexico & Gomez come to mind.

And Galactic for sure. First when they started incorporating DJ's/hip-hop into their sound, and now with the lady singer who seems to dominate their shows. I used to love them, now meh.

I still love Nick Cave but don't really like the direction of the Bad Seeds in the past few years. They've gotten much harder, losing some of their great dynamic. Still, they're coming later this year and I expect to be there.

In jazz one of my favorites for a long time was Nicholas Peyton, just an amazing straight jazz trumpet player, but then he began playing keyboards more than his trumpet, and ultimately hardly played his trumpet at all, and when he does he's usually playing a keyboard with one hand at the same time... blaa. Also Terrence Blanchard, who now tends to play lots of electric type music using effects on his trumpet. Meh.

And then going way back of course there's Journey, who were great early on until The Human Dentist Drill joined them. Yeesh.

I too have Tuna fatigue. Last time I saw 'em (w/ Kimmock) I was severely underwhelmed. They used to be one of my favorite bands.

Used to be a big fan of DSO.  Saw them for the first time back in 1999 in Keene, NH and was blown away. Used to see them every time they would come to town and they provided some of my best post-Jerry GD music experiences.  But after FJ (aka JK) left, it was just meh and don't really put any time, money, or effort to see them these days (no disrespect to them as musicians, but they just don't do it for me anymore).

After 25 years, I'm no longer a Subaru "Loyalist", does that count?

I also don't return food at a restaurant.

honestly...phil. i used to see every show that came thru the bay, but after a year or so of TXR it seems like the really great lineups that show up from time to time at the cap or at festivals in other parts of the country dont come here, and im not a big fan of most of the txr regulars. many of them are great musicians, but simply dont play the kind of music that drives me to make an effort to see the show. many of them, on the other hand, are not great musicians, and are genuinely painful to watch.

the last handful of times i saw phil at txr were fun, solid music, etc, but simply didnt have that X factor i am seeking.

overall im not a fan of trading the grand adventure of large venues complete with parking lot, wooks, and "the dark side of town" in for a smaller, more intimate venue that feels micromanaged and does not have the adventure or dark aspects that come with larger shows.

its been 3-4 years since ive seen phil, and its not that i dont want to, id be stoked to see an amendola lineup. but these days, with phil shows im interested in so few and far between, and the zones "show announcement" aspect in drastic decline, typically by the time i hear about a solid phil lineup at txr, its sold out. i simply dont have the time or interest anymore to be constantly checking the concert calendar of a venue that only hosts a small handful of lineups id like to see each year. seems like when they announce a lineup, the show is either on sale immediately on within 12-24 hours, leaving no time to plan my work schedule, rally my crew, get $ to the bank to buy tix, etc etc, and then after going on sale immediately, its sold out in hours.

just not wowed enough by the music going down to keep clued in and ready to roll 24/7. i dont mind fighting the masses for hard to get tickets that sell out in no time, but typically you have a week or more to plan for the onsale date, get the crew together, book lodging, etc.

was fun while it lasted. for the moment im content with phish and jrad, with much better improv, and an announcement schedule that leaves me time to hear about the show and make plans before tickets go on sale or sell out.

I probably wouldn't go see the Stones now, but they recently got me through some intense grieving, dancing to Beggars Banquet and Let it Bleed, that stuff I love...

Also, Ken, I heard that the DSO show in Portland earlier this month was terrific. Like killer. Unfortunately, it seemed like they shot their wad on that one, the following night in Eugene was as sloppy as I've ever heard. Just didn't have it.

I also have DSO fatigue.

DSO at the Warfield last week  was far far superior to &co or whatever they choose to call  themselves

dso better cover band

Also JGB w jk at club fox in RC brought it last month fwiw

FOR SURE saw some good Phil last week I was surprised that , mcdoogle fit in so well not quite going over the top for being pretty Squirrley psychedelic in funky and Amendila had cut his hand and bailed but band was solid  I

pails energy and beaming presence are worth catching a few times we never know when the Bell tolls

and is still a master

And even if his show is sold out doesn't mean you can't get in

I wore out The Who and  Zeppelin while in junior high.

I stopped going to see the Dead in 1993 because the bad shows outnumbered the good ones.

Stopped attending Phish shows in 1995 because I wasn't interested in seeing them in arenas and there were too many spun youngins in attendance.

From 2009-2013 I once again attended Phish shows. In 2012 I lost my home to Superstorm Sandy, and by summer 2013 my wife said, "You need to spend your time and energy getting the house built, not running around to concerts like some teenager."  I couldn't argue that one, so that was it for concerts.

.

You rebuilt yet ?  I'll be glad to help  --  direct others to work.

'No, the other end of the hammer you idiot '

Where's that left-handed monkey wrench?

Yes, Ras, been home since feb. 2014. We were among the first 20 homes in my town to get their CO. Thanks for the offer.

I did go to a Phish show this past summer, it was the first time that I was disappointed with one of their shows.

Have only seen Brian solo, so not sure if it's strictly applicable but will NEVER see "The Beach Boys" as long as Mike Love is "unrepentant".

Stopped going to Phish in ‘95

Man thats heady.

I ditched Steel Pulse in the late 80's when they started incorporating Dancehall and Ragga into their sets.  Recently, I heard their new album from last year, and was pleasantly surprised to hear them return to a Roots sound.  I'd go see them again.

As a 15 year old kid in 1980, I liked AC/DC and Van Halen.  I gave up on AC/DC when "For Those About To Rock" came out.  Bands like The Clash, Talking Heads, Joy Division, Devo were happening.  The Police were huge and U2 was getting there.  AC/DC seemed canned and rehashed.  I stuck with Van Halen up through 1984, where they started to lose me a little and completely gave up on them when Sammy Hagar replaced Diamond Dave.

Then I got into the Grateful Dead and became more interested in earlier music genres (Blues, Jazz, Bluegrass, Country, Gospel) and more experimental and usually less commercial music.  I kept an ear out for a few contemporary bands in the 80s (R.E.M. X and Camper Van Beethoven being three main ones), but missed a lot of bands I wish I'd seen in their prime, like the Meat Puppets, The Replacements, Sonic Youth.

I wrote off the Hard Rock and Metal scene after I gave up on AC/DC and Van Halen.  MTV was blowing up and Hair Metal bands in spandex playing their buttrock were getting a lot of play.  It all seemed like a bad joke.  Unfortunately, this caused me to miss out on Slayer.

Started going to Phish in 95- haven't seen them since 2003 when they stopped showing up in Utah because of poor attendance- can't blame them. I'll check them out for one more show in Eugene this summer.

Bored with anything Dead related since about 2007. I have the recordings and an excellent system to play them on -very enjoyable when I'm in the mood.

Allmans are gone - glad I saw them as much as I did going back to 1970. Never got tired of them.

Mule still brings it for me- and Jeff Beck, and Santana.
Concerts for the most part just ain't worth the time and dollars anymore - for me.

>>>>> gave up on AC/DC when "For Those About To Rock" came out.

Because every single song started to sound the same?   I swear, you can know exactly what every Brian Johnson era song sounds like by just looking at the title.   Still in my top five concerts of all time though.

I'm over live reggae. Saw them all, but no more.

That's right, Elf, made the decision during the first set in Hershey 12.1. Gave away my Albany tickets and the Spectrum (12.15 ) was my last show...until 2009

I think they did alright without me.

Ratdog, walked out of a show, didn't look back.

DSO, deteriorating spark, also nothing but guys in the house, kinda like.......

As well as numerous bands, that I didn't love, but didn't mind hearing.

Have completely given up on JRAD and the remaining core 4.  Give me DSO anyday.
