Hot Tuna at Bob Green's Greenhaven, Corvallis Oregon,  May 25, 1987

Had the pleasure of working this show way back when, fun to meet the band, smoke a few joints in the alley, lol, good times!  It's a  3 camera pro-shot video.  The music was excellent, and the filming is great. Those of us working got copies (VHS) of the show (I believe they were filming their west coast tour).  I loaned out my copy decades ago, never got it back, a huge loss.  Yesterday I find out an old friend just digitized his 30 year old copy (2nd generation VHS), so I loaded it to Youtube last night.  4 parts,  enjoy!

Was at the show and used to have a hi gem VHS copy as well. Thanks!

Whereabouts in CV Was "Bob Green's Greenhaven" ??  First time I've heard of it.

It was a club that had many names back in the day, the Crazy Horse, Wes's, then Bob Green tried to turn it into a Reno style lounge, with his schmultzy routines, and the Greenhaven was born.  Didn't last that long, and was remodeled into several small biz.  On the west side of 3rd between Monroe and Jackson.

Thanks, Noodler.

I had to look  at a map to surmise it must have been where the Mac Store is now. Maybe there was a Mexican cafeteria-style place which also had a Bar, forget the name.

I see lotsa new stuff out by Circle; a TJ Maxx, Petsmart, Market O' Choice & Trader Joe.  I guess the 'no big-box stores' mentality went away back when they built Home Despot.

Yeah, it was a large club / restaurant for years, that later got broken up into several small biz.  Aomatsu is there now (Senor Sams use to be too).   The stage was on that south wall next to where the bank now has it's drive thru.  The Mac store is the building north of that.

Wow, this looks awesome. I'm at work, so I was only able to watch a bit, but looking forward to checking this out when I get home. Thanks a ton for posting!

Great, great stuff, thank you. That Trial By Fire is amazing.

Mucho Garcia for posting this,

Great Stuff!

Thank you Sir. I am going to watch all of it tonight.

Great stuff!

Check out Jack in the suit and tie!

Thanks for posting.

?  For some odd reason I thought they had played at the Odd Fellows.  Great show.  Was there ever a place on 9th called Lamplighter?

The Lamplighter was in the Benton Plaza Hotel. Tuna also played the upstairs of the Peacock (Top o' the Cock) one year, w/ Kantner.

New Riders duo (or trio?) played the Peacock as well.

There was once a venue on 9th called "Mother's Mattress Factory".

New Riders was 1992 or 1993 (the one I attended) and I can't honestly recall which musicians were in the band, 25 years later. '93 seems more likely somehow. I think there was at least one original member, don't know if anyone kept track of that era.

That's funny, I had no idea that the Señor Sam / Aomatsu location had ever been a club/venue.

Here's the lineup from a setlist of one of the few shows on archive for those years, 1993 & 1994.\

John ‘Marmaduke’ Dawson - Guitars, Vocals
Gary Vogensen - Lead Guitar
Rusty Gauthier - Acoustic Guitar, Slide Guitar, Fiddle, Harmony Vocals
Billy Laymon - Bass Guitar
Spartacus^ - Drums

When I moved to Cornolio in 1980, there was a thriving music scene with many large clubs.

Mothers Mattress Factory on 9th had great local and touring bands, the kind of place the Crazy 8's or Curtis Salgado when Robert Cray was his guitarist played (John Lee Hooker, etc).

Wes's / Crazy horse was at the location of Senior Sams / Aomatsu, took up that entire building, could fit 150 people or more.  That was the rock club, with bands like the Dan Reed Network, Nimble Darts, and Bosworth Brothers being frequent acts.  But a lot of pro bands came thru there, wish I could remember them all but it's been too long.

The Lamplighter was in the Benton Hotel, and was the country music hot spot.

Flappers Alley between Corvallis and Philomath was a hot spot for local bands.

They were all large venues, so was easy for musicians to make money compared to today, where all the clubs are tiny.  Was a fun era to be a musician in Corvallis, not that there's anything wrong with the smaller clubs of today. (I've played 25 + halloweens at Squirrels, 19 Non-Presidents balls at the top of the cock, etc).  Back then Frats hired bands 3 x a year (each term), then the street dances...  now DJ's cover that.  Yep, miss the old days sometimes!

Thanks, Druba,

For the historical summary. I have heard tales of "Flappers Alley"  from slightly older residents of Corn Valley & Coast Range, but naturally their recollections are vague...

Either it was torn down, or became the now-defunct junque-shoppe with the giant parachute to cover the roof leaks. I picked up some useful items there back when.

It's a good guess that I've run into you before at the Squirrel's. I used to deliver fresh Kegs of the local there by Hand-Truck, back when I made it and it was drinkable.  We had a great run for a few years using extremely high-quality Malt from BC. The Malt company was Gambrinus.  That was the period after the original instigator had fucked up and shuttered the place.

Anyway, thanks for the Hot Tuna contribution. I will definitely save that on a drive when I next sit down in a high-bandwidth WIFI spot.

Flappers was at the intersection of Philomath Blvd. and Country Club across from the Bark Place.. It is now a fitness ctr. and coffee shop. The raimbow/parachute junk shop in "downtown" Philomath is a now a shoe factory and store.

The 4 or 5 zoners who care about this:

We must party together soon.

Flapper's Alley was previously known as the Chat-N- Chew, and had the area's first topless waitresses. They blocked up the windows during this time, which piqued my young interest.

Greenhaven was for years Lum Li's Chinese restaurant, later the Elks Club

Who remembers the Top Rail, basement bar under The Lamplighter?  Chuck "White Shoes " Johnson (bartender)?

Massive fire at the Peacock, resulting in the "Top of the Cock"  venue, Mud Honey, Green Day, Hot Tuna with P.K. New Riders 11/21/93. Downstairs. Canned Heat, Dan Hicks. Country Joe. Nick Gravenites, Kim Simmonds etc.Tommy R.I.P.

Don't get me started on Gill. Or Violent Femmes at the County Fairgrounds and ROTC  Armory. Or the M.U. Ballroom Sons of Champlin.

Happy Hour 5pm Friday at Rodent's?

Miss Tommy, great guy!   And it was Steve and what's his names apartment that burned upstairs from the Peacock.  Back then the peacock was only half the downstairs section.  Greenhaven was Wes's when I moved to town, Top Rail (Bottom Rung),  Casa del Tierro,  Night Deposit, Class Reunion, yep...  Toa Yen for after drinks, Riverside for breakfast (or Oscars).  Then there was the Armory, McAlexander Field house, Fairgrounds, etc.

We use to play acoustic at Squirrels sometimes, and eventually got Greg to Allow us (Acid Reign) and Ramblin Rex to play there in 1986.  Rex was first, we played several times a year.  Then "take the 5th" did a summer run playing sundays doing jazz in 87 (Later became Thousand Pieces).  Local denizens included Henry Vestine from Canned Heat (no, he didn't play woodstock), Mike Rosso (Albert Collins),  James Bradshaw (Albert Collins), Ramblin Rex (Zappa), etc.

Funny how the large rooms all shut down (Flappers, Wes's, Mothers), and the small venues that weren't meant for music took over (Squirrels, Peacock).  Later the upstairs of the cock opened, and there was great music (leon russell, hot tuna, etc).

Think I've played Squirrels 50 times now (26 Halloweens, weekly summer of 87, Magick Circle, Acid Reign, Mottburger, El Kabong, Lentil Bean and the Material guise, Svengalies, Dr Winky Spice, Take the 5th, Dead pan Cool, on and on...    fond memories
