Homemade Sushi Rolls

Forums:

Made sushi rolls at home yesterday.   I don't usually consume commercially raised or harvested animal products, so if I wanted something other than avocado rolls, had to go straight to the source. Most fish based sushi begins at some particular harbor, so I packed up my crab rings headed over to Yaquina Bay in Newport:

Spent a soggy night camping and crabbing in the rain, but managed to catch 20 Red Rock crabs along with one big Dungeness crab from the dock on the bay right behind the Rouge brewery. They wouldn't survive the trip back to Portland, so I boiled them up at the campsite and packed them in ice for the ride home.   Once I got back to town, cleaned the crab.  I put most of them in the freezer for later, but kept out enough crab meat for a bunch of sushi rolls:

Then my partner prepared the rolls using a sushi mat, the crab meat, sushi rice (cooked with a little rice vinegar), and garnished with avocado, carrots, and celery.

And finally, homemade sushi rolls served with wasabi, pickled radish, and sake:
