I say start threads regarding political theory, history, etc in that folder. OS is for what going on on the present. OS is a ticker. People are dealing with ths crap in real time so participate or willfully ignore the obvious political threads. Pretty simple, actually.

I did try to adhere to judit's wish not to do poli sci up in the OS. 

Once the avalanche broke free it was out of my hands.

Threads about Utah land politics are more lifestyle than political.

The origin of the request to start political threads in the Politics folder was when people were posting in political threads in ways that were outside the rules of civility at VLZ. Understanding that there’s passion in political discourse, the solution was to shift those threads to the Politics folder where it was expectable and acceptable.

At this point, it’s evident that some amount of political posting in OS is what feels comfortable to the majority of the group and the posting has been civil. These are stressful times and people need space for coming together with discussion. We will of course retain the right to move threads to Politics when it gets more contentious than we’re comfortable with

It's been 3 days since posts have been made in the Politics folder, while it's pretty thick over here. What nedb said makes sense, but these are fine lines and hard to know which side one's thread will fall on, since one beautiful thing about Zone threads is the capacity to touch on so many subjects.

I've been laying low on moving threads and saying anything because I've been sick for 2 weeks, but I'm beginning to feel better and noticing more nuance. Talking about things happening in the news in OS is swellish, but making it about Zoners often takes it over the line of civil discussion and into being shitty, and that doesn't belong in OS.

Why are people not posting threads in the Politics folder?

I like political threads in OS. I have almost nothing to add to any of them, but I like to pop in and check 'em out, especially as they grow. But I never have and wouldn't ever go into the politics specific folder, just as I think many who don't go into the sports folder probably enjoy reading a World Series, Super Bowl or NBA Finals thread in OS.

Especially these days politics is right at the top of everyone's attention every day so it should be talked about where the majority of people are, but even in duller political times my personal definition of Other Stuff has always been Anything Goes, where anything can be talked about.

I like it that way.

Besides, if political conversation were restricted to the politics-only folder how many of us would never have heard of "Black Bush" or "Osama"?

Talk about good nicknames.

What I've been seeing in the political threads is mostly folks staying focused on the stories that are emerging. However, there are supporters of the current administration on the zone who don't seem interested in civil discussions of politics; Seadog, Thom and Fafa come to mind as examples of what I'd call sore winners. The political posts they make don't focus much on the stories coming out in the news, but instead their posts mostly troll folks who are questioning and criticizing the direction in which the US is headed and eventually some folks start responding in kind.

To be clear, I think political discussions should remain in Other Stuff and I'd like to see these discussions remain civil. In the post I quoted above from admin, it's noted that "We will of course retain the right to move threads to Politics when it gets more contentious than we’re comfortable with." This seems to imply that moving threads to the Politics folder will contain any lack of civility in that folder, but it's my understanding that civility is the standard for all of Vivala, and not just Other Stuff, so moving "more contentious" threads to Politics doesn't uphold that standard; it just keeps the more unpleasant things mostly out of sight.

Are Fafa, Nancy and pyramidheat civil or habitual line steppers? 

What's a line stepper, Slacker? I've seen you use that term a couple of times lately, but I'm not clear what you mean.

Like Lance I never have much to add, and it doesn't bug me to see them in OS, because politics and policies are so important for the future of this planet that it should never be far from our mind.

Seems folks are just too damn lazy to got to the politics folder where the rest of us can just ignore it all. Nothing getting settled or done. Just a bunch of folks spouting their personal beliefs and outrage. All good, just belongs in it's own folder. 

Fresh news is OK I think.  Opinions threads go to the folder for it.

I don't post in Politics because I can't keep track of shit if it's in different folders.

I don't give a shit about 85% of the threads in OS, so I skip the fuck over them. It isn't that hard. Is it really that hard for someone to not open a thread that is clearly about politics? Or, does just seeing it there upset delicate sensitivities? You have nothing to offer and don't like what's probably in it? Don't friggin open it.

It will be a riot to watch people try to determine what's news and what's politics. Some of you should get a direct line that Admin, like a red phone. You can incessantly read the threads you don't like, and as soon as it crosses your arbitrary line you can play neighborhood patrol. 

Or, people can sack up and not read shit that they clearly don't want to, and stop caring about where and what others say.
