Anyone else watching the new Ken Burns series on Hemingway? Very interesting and insightful with alot of dark subject matter. I just got around to watching episode 2 last night and the opening really struck a chord with me because as they are discussing how Hemingway "mythologized" himself and created an "avatar" of himself, and how that weighs a person down, I couldn't help but think of our own dear Jerry Garcia from the time of "Captain Trips" to almost a messiah figure, and his decline and death. Anyone else get the same thoughts? Watch 2:20 thru 5:00 mark for the part I'm talking about :

Blood sport killer, violent,
Blood sport killer, violent, drunk narcissist that was likely the most overrated writer of the last century. Interesting life to learn about but not likely someone I would have been friends with or even want to be around. I've read most of his work and own a few early editions. The nick adams stories are good. Like most artists, a very tortured man.
regarding ken burns, I enjoy watching his stuff superficially but inside I think about how flawed his jazz program was and wonder like all media what the rest of the story is. Fuck wynton marsalis

Agreed, and I agree with most of the rest of your assessment, Fishcane, but Hemingway's style is an interesting study when compared to the more florid prose that preceded his stripped down writing.
That said, I might stream the series this weekend.

For some reason, half the
For some reason, half the people you see in Florida riding around on bicycles are Ernest Hemingway look-alikes.

Yeah, fish, that was Hemingway's term for the thinking behind his style. But it was more than just a reduction of things like description in his writing; Hemingway also held back important elements of the story from readers at times.
An example of that can be found in his story "Hills Like White Elements", which is about a man and a woman waiting for a train at a small station in rural Spain. They drink beer and Anis del Toro, and discuss the landscape and their lives. The couple seem to be at odds with each other, but it's not entirely clear why that is; what is made clear is the woman will soon have a medical procedure that's not named. All that's revealed about the procedure is that "It's just to let the air in."
From that cryptic phrase--"let the air in"--many have inferred that the woman intends to have an abortion, but this is never overtly stated. What is made relatively clear is that the need for the procedure is related to the problems the couple is having in their relationship.

I wrote a paper about that
I wrote a paper about that story once. Trying to recall my statement... wondering if I still have a copy of my paper
