Hard not to think they were thinking about Brent on this one...

He's Gone ~ Nassau Coliseum, May 6, 1981

For Bobby Sands.

Bobby Sands  I almost posted that one.

The Brent one I won't do.

I kinda liked this one from 85. But many better.

A great song that I've always loved, especially when they still played & sang with more delicacy & gentle dynamic touch.

My personal favorite, IMO as good a version as you'll ever hear (and a great show overall)...

Sorry, can't pick an archive now.

I like when the guitar goes doodaladoodaladoodalado at the end of the song.

Just like falling down the stairs.

Too bad that Hall & Oates did "Every Time You Go Away" during their sit-in at the 1988 Rain Forest Action Network Benefit at MSG.  A "She's Gone">"He's Gone" would've been epic.

Love me many of them '83-'85 versions.

Let's put in a good word for 1973.
Here's one from Kezar Stadium on 05/26/73.

Great choice NYC Dave!!!!!!

What is really exceptional is the post He's Gone Jam!

The best, longest, most interesting and diverse jam of the 80s and 90s.

Please check it out and would love to hear of anything close to it.

After this the 9/18/90 Jerry Jam.

A plaintive wailing version of this song really gets me.

3/19/73 for Brendan. RIP to you my brother it's been a hoot.

I always liked this one. It was John Lennon's birthday, and the He's Gone was wedged in between a rare second set Jack Straw and Smokestack Lightning.

The 5/6/81 version is my favorite that I attended.

I also loved this one from 8/3/82 at The Starlight Amphitheatre in KC post drums He's Gone-Other One

 https://archive.org/details/gd82-08-03.matrix.chappell.30705.sbeok.flacf...

at the end of that song in the later era I wasn't a fan of when Jerry would scat to what he was playing. Dave Gilmour tried this too. I'm not  sure what drugs made them decide that's what their fans would enjoy

Yo NYC Dave!!!

Great call!!

Probably my favorite piece of live GD music from the over 200 shows I caught..

So interesting and out there. I challenge anyone to find a better jam in the 80s.

My initial Gd stomping ground.

First, Scott, that's twice in this thread you seem to have referred to a '73 show as an '80s or '90s "jam".

IMO it's not fair to compare much of anything from the '80s or certainly the '90s with '73.

And what the hell, since this thread is back up (and why not, He's Gone is one of the great Grateful Dead songs) I offer a lovely version from Brent's first show ever, San Jose April of '79.

A scattered but ultimately very fine show, and also one of the best soundboards you'll ever hear.

Another example of an exquisite Garcia bridge, as well.  Short and not too complicated but damn!  And that major-to-minor thing ...

F'n A.

That 84 Wosstah show was a gooey one.

...and what Tatters said.

Pre 90's, especially any that ended in the marching band tune, some with whistle,  that went into Truckin.

The slow Jerry stuff was grating after Brent.  I'm sure ill get the 'stella '93!!' post but to me we were already witnessing a slow death --- it wasn't something that I wanted expressed out loud.

Thanks for posting that, Mike. It's mt all-time favorite.

He' Gone>Smokestack

my Deadbase says that's the first Smokestack since 1972. Bobby's first on vocals?

Dick's Picks Vol. 1

A nice slow soulful ten minute He's Gone with a great build-up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVaxlZYRNP4

1973 seems to have been a good year for this song. I've always loved how donna harmonizes so beautifully in this song, and I think this is why I probably lean toward these years for that reason.

It all started with the He's Gone ,The reason for the encore of Going Down the Road was that Sound man Dan Healy had just received word of his father's passing and was heading back to Cal after the show. Dan was in tears on the board as the boys sent him home with this salute. It was also evident in other song choices that nite such as He's Gone, Black Peter         https://archive.org/details/gd80-04-28.fob-nak700.non-dank.3402.sbeok.sh... His Fathers Plane Crashed in Garberville ca Airport . The Healy Senior center was partially funded by the G/D in tribute

^ The Baltimore show was apparently Healy's first show back on tour after his Fathers death. It was also my first show,

The reason for the encore of Going Down the Road>>>

Also, 1st time played with Brent Mydland, 1st since 1/12/79.

Loved that He's Gone/Other One pre-drums in 1980, saw it 3 times.

I finally got my Dave's Picks 36 in the mail yesterday, and the He's Gone from 03/26/87 Hartford is pretty sweet, and the jam out of it gets pretty epic.

love the brent ones

 03/26/87 Hartford

the Desolation Road is worth a listen from this show Jerrywise

Hey Doc! Good to see you around.

^ Thanx pal but why?

>> 03/26/87 Hartford ... the Desolation Road is worth a listen from this show Jerrywise <<<

Might want to check out the Bird Song....it soars.

Dave's Picks are up to 36?

I don't think I have listened to any of his picks yet...

With the long covid winter setting in, it might be time to rectify that.

I think both those shows are quite strong. Phil really makes his presence known during Morning Dew.

They did a great job mixing these IMO.

Awesome stuff. '87 is far from a "go-to" for me, but i really enjoyed listening to these.

Doctor D, I think Mark was shouting out to Doc Martin, a zoner from the past.

Dude had a thing for Velveeta.

Yeah. That I was.

I can change my handle to Doc Martin if it will make you happy. But I won't eat Velveeta! That's where I draw the line! Valveeta has always been fish bait.

Velveeta and Spam Sammies....Yum..Yum..Yum

Damn NYC

Had not heard that kezar shoe since that day in 1973  holy molly

wowza. Just after Ron's  passing and  Keith so nice

I'm sure that was first time I ever saw buddy cage (and Waylon) too

Thank you

the next Saturday was pretty darn impressive as well

GOD DAMN I LOVE THE GRATEFUL DEAD

Tim you obviously don't have your taste buds back yet.

Ran across this He's Gone on Reddit today:

Fresno, CA
07/19/1974

https://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1974/07/19/hes-gone?source=90581

That Fresno show was a few months after I moved away.  It was another 10 yrs (all over the country working in the oil fields) before I saw my first show at Irvine when I was an apprentice electrician.

Did you like that Irvine show MarkD? I loved it.

We gotta nail Mickey's other foot to the floor....

Well doctor,  my younger brother went Friday night and when he came home, he said that I had to go with him the next night. He said it was right up my alley and I needed to be there. I was not familiar with the music, except what we heard on the radio.  I was impressed with the scene, my brother was right about that.  I thought the music was very good and warranted furthur exploration.  My next show was at Anaheim Stadium with Bob Dylan some 4 months later. Ate shrooms and the music blew me away. I did not miss another show in Socal, Nevada or Arizona until almost the very end. I was fortunate to attend some of the last camping shows at Cal Expo( always loved Cal expo) and Long Beach.

I missed out on so much by not staying in Fresno just a few more months. Who knows how things might have changed. Instead I spent 9 yrs as a mudlogger(kind of a wellsite geologist that tracks the drilling onto a log which becomes the record for the well) in the oilfield. Rocky Mtns, Louisiana Gulf coast, and finally back in California from the oilfields in Bakersfield to the gas patches up north.  Not a lot of Dead in those circles, so I was never exposed.  Until Irvine and my little brother.

So, doctor, sorry you asked?

So your first show was Irvine 87. I Imagined you were an older Head. That Sunday Easter show was the best and perfectly played. Give it a spin if you care. And not sorry I asked. Like hearing stories of peoples experiences.

I like the one from 2-18-85

4/19/87 is the last 1/2 Step>Frankin's

Played 3 more times in the late 80's, sandwiched around Stranger.

>>> That Sunday Easter show was the best and perfectly played.

i love that 1st set so much.

>>>>>>i love that 1st set so much

#MeToo. It just shreds. Best Ton's i've heard. Alabama>Promised Land is rockin'. I could definitely have this as a desert island show. Great show to turn someone on to the GD.

And the 2'nd set is just as impressive.

Not my pic but from the show

gd1987-04-19.photo_.01.tapers_view (1).jpg

>>>>84 Syracuse

2nd Bobby Smokestack, too

^That show was mayhem. Bob doing two or three Take A Step Back's, a ripping Jack Straw to end the set, and a

booming Shakedown to open the second.

Marin Vet's Aud '84 with the "quadraphonic" sound.

(((((The DOME)))))

^ That Smokestack is epic especially that jam into drums!

Did the GD ever say "Take a step back" on the west coast? My guess is no. Could always get up front at general admission shows that I saw. Ventura was easy. Very relaxed vibe. I often wandered to the front and back easily. Same with the Frost and Cal Expo.

>>Marin Vet's Aud '84 with the "quadraphonic" sound.

My memory thinks the Meadowland's show and Carrier Dome shows had the speakers hanging in the back of the arena

Listening to the end of drums I'm sure Healy was swirling the "bones"  through the quads

Next band I saw with speakers hanging in the back of the arena was Pink Floyd at MSG '88

How lucky are we to have Healy on our team!

I'm almost 67 doctor. How much older did you think I was? Or are you referring to yrs as a dh?

mark did not see the GD bus for several years

but he continues to make up for that lost time

i started in 67, and I am only slightly older than fading away

xox

Mark I meant as a DH. I remember seeing your pic here and I knew you were no spring chicken. :)

But you look good for 67.
