I'm not one to start birthday threads, but I sure did love this guy.

He left us too soon, but what a story he told.

Happy Birthday Jerry.

Happy Birthday Jerry Garcia.

You provided us with countless musical adventures. I for one thank you for that.

I was happy to have been in the front row for his 50th birthday show at Irvine in '92.

We sang happy birthday; he did not acknowledge, and I loved him even more for that.

His playing spoke for itself.

Miss him all the time.

27 years ago tonight, my (X) wife's water broke and we headed over to what was then Central General Hospital in Plainview New York for the birth of my son.

While in the birthing room, I was very high watching the David Letterman show 7/31>8/1/1990.

The musical act was Edgar Winter and Rick Derringer and they rocked out a great version of "Free Ride".

My son was born during "Free Ride" on Jerry Garcia's birthday! Born cool!

Happy Birthday to the two "J's

Bluelight....23 years ago...my wife was two weeks late w birth of her second, our first, child. The Doc called us on 8/4 and said "why dont you come down, grab a room on maternity floor, etc...and we ll induce first thing in a.m. tmrw." So, off we go....and, 1130 pm rolls around...im just chilling in this gorgeous hotel room-like setting, and Letterman comes on....i fell asleep....and woke up when her water broke (i literally thought someone had popped open a bottle of champagne)...and it must have been a lil after two a.m. when Luke arrived...happy BD , to your son, cool story,...im actually going to have to google it and see who was musical guest that night!

Thanks again Jerry...RIP ...this world misses you....

Great birth stories there.^

I attended the 50th birthday show in Irvine and the 52nd in Auburn Hills.

HBD Jerry!

(Meeting up at the movies tonight to celebrate!)

Jambone, Very cool stuff.

I wasn't able to confirm the musical act until Letterman retired and his shows past shows got logged.

Today, I found the video and just sent an email to my son.

Jerry was off on vacation on his birthday in 1990.

thanks for coming, see ya next time

You left the Party too soon! I fucking miss you!

Happy Birthday Jerry!

HBJ, thanks for all the fun times you gave me

Whenever I think we missed out on anything after 1995, I remind myself that we might have had nothing past 1986.

There was some fire still left in that engine.

Sidebar: Courtney Love was on Letterman the kiddo's birth night.

I never knew you
But then who really did?
If you were at all like me
You managed to keep yourself hid
A patchwork quilt of a life
Memories embroidered
On your soul

So please forgive me
For putting you in my song
But the spirit she moves me
In fact she pushes me along
It's a patchwork quilt of a life
Can't stop the river
Just let it roll

We were at Jones Beach
When we got the word
Saddest sound that I ever heard
The bluest note that nobody could play
Ravens sang with us that night on the stage
Tears of sadness, tears of rage
But nobody spoke, we all felt old
And in the way

So walk beside me
Or above me, I don't know
These days it sure seems
I'm lost where ever I go

God, how could you, I heard someone say
And what do we do with our lives now anyway?
Now that our North Star can no longer be found

But there's a banjo moon in a tie-dyed sky
Hippies dance and babies cry
Church bells ring as a silver-haired angel look down
And the blood of his music runs through the veins of our guitars
Bright lights, Dark Star

I never knew you
But then who really did
If you were at all like me
You managed to keep yourself hid

FALLING STARS by R. Hunter

So many falling stars
Can’t find the one i drop’t
It slipped out of my fingers
And fell into the sky

Can’t tell one from another
A tiny streak of light
Exactly like its brother
Winks out inside the night

An angel might have caught it
Put it in her pocket
Or wore it as a locket
That falling star of mine
----------------------
So many shooting stars
For dreams to ride upon
Don’t have too many wishes
Just to stay awake ‘til dawn

Go looking in the meadow
For the star that i call mine
I can tell it by the color
Can tell it by the shine

An angel might have caught it
Put it in her pocket
Or wore it as a locket
That falling star of mine
----------------------------
This one looks just like it
Except the shade of blue
A little dark for mine, that’s why
I’m giving it to you

I found someone else’s star
Mistook it for my own
Dreamed it for a little while
Then sent it packing home

So many falling stars
Can hardly see the sky
Everybody’s got one
You do, and so have i

Careful how you treat them
One day they’ll be gone
A shooting star is born to fall
And not live on and on
. . .and on and on and on
An angel might have caught it
Put it in her pocket
Or wore it as a locket
That falling star of mine
-------------------------------
It’s our little secret
Find it where you seek it
Angels don’t have falling stars
But go ahead and keep it

Take it back on up with you
Where it first fell from
Under its own power
Right on out of kingdom come

I know an angel caught it
Put it in her pocket
I know an angel caught it
That falling star of mine

Falling star of mine
That falling star of mine
Falling star of mine
That falling star of mine

Happy Birthday Jerry!

Thank you for sharing your gift of music with us.heart

You helped create a mobile space for exploratory collaborations and energy transference that inspired a beautiful, intelligent, soulful community to look beyond social norms and to reach for something better. A community that immediately made me feel welcomed and loved, and to this day, I still cherish.

My life would not be the same without hearing your gift, Jerry. Thank you.

I miss you.

Love,

Merri
