Have you ever "owned" two dogs or two cats at once?

Forums:

Do you believe it's ultimately a better situation for the "animal" in so far as having a companion on the same species?  Or, is that a projection and they might not really care one way or the other; or even not be into it even moreso?

Don't fool yourself.  The cats own you and put up with the dogs.

We owned 2 dogs and 4 cats at once. They all got along great!

After his brother died our cat told us he wanted a kitten, so we got him one.

They are best friends.

I captured and had fixed 14 feral cats that were living on my property. I fed them every day. One day my wife brought home a dog someone found. We don't have feral cats anymore, still have the dog.

Two cats are good. They groom each other and provide companionship and they play with each other too.

Don’t know about dogs.

Dogs are pack animals.  Two, three, four...as many as you can handle.

Are you sure about that?

We have Shi Tzu and his name is "Dusty" he doesn't speak any English; just a little German, there's a German Shepard that lives behind us,

Would like to get another dog, but there may be a linguistic problem.

I speak to Dusty and he just tilts his head ~

^teach them sign language.

Hüsky does not Côëxìst with the Kittehs.  We've tried to establish harmonious Canine - Feline community Spirit,  but early experiments have not shown much promise.

In the past we've had 2-3 Dogs and 3-4 Kittehs all living on the Farm,  sometimes sharing Houses.  However,  the two species have never connected as Family.

My belief is that Cats run away from Dogs for a good reason.  If you can get a Puppy & Kitten together at early age,  they can be Good Friends.

We've had two different pairs of cats, each pair from the same litter.

Our first two, Bat and Coconut, got along great and often slept together, yin-yang (orange and black).

Our current couple, Gus and Calvin, rarely hang out together and don't seem to like each other all that much.

We currently have two dogs and two cats. The dogs love each other and spend just about every waking moment playing with each other. The two cats barely tolerate each other and don't like to be in the same room at the same time...

It all comes down to the individual personalities of the cats.

Some cats hate dogs and will have nothing to do with them.  My old cat Keke (RIP) hated dogs and would torment them through the fence like that cat who tormented Snoopy in the old Peanuts comic strips.

Other cats are more tolerant and some actually like dogs.   l lived in a place way back when where there was a half coyote dog that would regularly play and even wrestle with this big orange cat named OJ.  Hours of entertainment there.

Here is my cat Pepe and a dog named Xylo.  The dog is fascinated by Pepe and tries to hump him.  Pepe puts up with it and may even like it.  They are both consenting adults so I can't really try to stop it if that's what they are into:

I think that it's Totally Awesome when Cats & Dogs can play nice together.

However,  my particular example of Siberian Hüsky seems locked - in to the notorious "High Prey - Drive" behavior associated with the breed.

He's stayed a few nights in Dogsitters' homes with Kittehs,  but they judiciously stayed away.  I've seen H.I.M.  kill Guinea Hens and attempt to kill a Chicken.

There have been altercations with Sheep and Horses as well.

To his credit,  he is great with all types of Dog and Hu-person.  No aggression toward fellow Canines or people of any age.  Very docile and protective of little Kids,  even when they poke and punch the Hüsky.  The Sibe is actually a great "Baby-sitter" breed.

Flash back to October 1994 in Missoula Montana.  Got home from Phish at the Adams Arena still high on the LSD.   Our roommates just got a tiny kitten and the neighbors' husky walks in and rushes over and scoops up kitten in his mouth.   Thankfully, kitten survived (just puncture wounds) but it was a traumatic sight to see.

>>>attempt to kill a Chicken.

Now that is a subject for another thread.

Well,

The Hüsky got loose (broke a metal-wire lead) while I was mowing that field with the tractor.

I watched H.I.M. run by me and across the road to neighbor-farmer's place.  So I ran over and gave chase.

He slaughtered a Guinea-Fowl and then went for a very tough Rooster,  but after getting roughed up,  the Rooster played Dead,  and is alive and well today.

After that episode I'm convinced that he should not be around Poultry.

Actually,  first time today!   I’ve had Stella the Jack Russell for over 15 years.  We just brought home Gidget the Pembroke Welsh Corgi today!  So far they are getting along.   Gidget is 16 weeks old.

4 dogs, 2 cats.. I couldn't take it so I got rid of her (wife) and her pack.

Yeah, I guess on average that most cats "win" in so far as this goes, but I still think it all boils down to a cognitive construct ... regardless of whether it's in the cat's head or the "owner's".

It's been a few months since my cat died, and have recently been contemplating adopting a cat or dog.  Had visited the local shelter to just check it out & there was a cat who I seemed to have a connection with ... but he had come to the shelter with another cat who may have been his sister (they're not sure) ... since they're both 8yrs & look alike.   Not sure if I'm up for having two cats, but also not looking to break them up if they're siblings or friends.

some places make you take pairs of cats...i don't get it.

Might as well get two Kittehs, 19.5,  if you're going to have any.  They keep each other company and kill twice as many Mice.  You have to clean the litterbox anyway,  unless you train them to shit outdoors.

Last Kitteh that lived here was indoor / outdoor Cat.  He would cat around outside from morning until nightfall,  and retire indoors.  Funny thing is that he would mostly shit outdoors but when he came in,  he liked to pee in his litterbox.

>>>>some places make you take pairs of cats...i don't get it.

It avoids separating the siblings, especially when one of them is particularly timid.  Getting pairs or triplets of litter mates can be real fun.  They will cuddle in a pile and lick each others heads and the play fighting can be an intense and highly entertaining to watch.

These three came as a package deal:

Here they are a year later.  From left to right - Philomena, Pip, and Linda

Philomena seems alert, Pip very regal and Linda coquettish.

i live in a small place. i only want one.

they are cats, not children.

Not necessarily against two, but as others have alluded to ... some might not always keep each other company in friendly manner.   One thing that comes to mind:  I didn't think twice about leaving my cat at home by herself for 3-6 nights, but not sure if 2+ creates issues on this front, or in any other regard?

We usually have 2 dogs at a time. We got our oldest, Jellybean, to keep Roly company, and they did great together.

When Roly died, it wasn't long before my wife offered to "foster" Layla, who never left, and lived with JB for 6 years.

Then Layla passed after a brief intense illness.

Now mind you, we had always introduced the dogs to each other carefully before they co-habitated, to make sure they were compatible. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!! (spoiler alert).

So, we had JB by himself again, and were going to let him live out his life as a solo dog, as he had gotten on in years, and is pretty needy, and kinda beat up. BUT, we had an offer from Roly's breeder of a great niece of Roly's, and we jumped at the chance to have this dog, as we had loved Roly so. But, we were transporting Katie (now Cressida) from Georgia in the middle of the winter, without ever having met her. The 1st 3 weeks went ok, and then there was a brawl. Not just your average dog-tussle, but a real, blood-spilling, nasty, mean ass, hadda jump into the middle to break it up in order to keep one or the other of the dogs alive kinda fight. So, now we're on edge and on constant guard, keeping them separate, allowing minimal interaction. Then, another brawl, dog blood, human blood, real intent to do each other serious harm. Then another, and they've been kept completely separate ever since. Our house is very small, so this is no mean feat, and as JB is whiny and needy as heck, moreso even since the fights (the 1st of which HE instigated!), he spends a lot of time with Mrs. Z. I keep my eyes on the pup, who needs supervision and training. So, Mrs. and I don't spend much time together at home. It's gone on for a year and a half now, and IT SUCKS!!!

So, be smart, and if you're considering adding another animal to your household, make sure they get along well first.

I would like to get another Doggy to keep Hüsky company,  and he gets along just Great with the vast majority of Dogs.

However,  it is a big effort to keep one Doggy entertained and groomed.  Adding another would be quite the chore.

These two seem fine together

Was going to adopt the tricolor's sister, but the vet bills for three dogs would have been overwhelming

One of each.

6 cats and one dog currently in the home. My daughter is in her final year of pharmacy school and while she is working at different places around the state we have taken in her two cats. My other daughter that lives at home has one, and my wife has one. We all have Rocky our dog who has been with us for 12 years. Recently we also took in my mother in law who is 80 and suffering with Alzheimer’s and her two cats. The mil’s cats pretty much stay in her room, but all the others roam about freely and for the most part get along. If there is any mixing it up it is two cats, the dog has a strong pimp hand and the cats don’t fuck with him.

FOM, sorry for your loss, two is twice the fun, actually 2.27 x’s the fun

why can't we just have 1 cat?

I own three dogs. The oldest is 15, a pekingese, and he is the king shit alpha. The other two know not to mess with him. The middle is a Tibetan Spaniel who is 10. He's very misunderstood. Carter is a mixed breed about 85 pounds, 8 years old, and he is the definitely of a dog. He is happy and loves EVERYONE!

It's amazing about the pack mentality and how the alpha is well known and respected. The little dogs stick together while carter just like the ditzy, happy one.

>>>>6 cats and one dog currently in the home.

Six cats is kinda of pushing it.   As a general rule of thumb, once the cats outnumber humans by more than 2-1, all bets are off and the cats will take over and ignore the people.

The most cats I lived with at any given time was 12 - six adults and six kittens.   But I had roommates so the proper cat-human balance was still there (at least with the adult cats).

Three dogs, one cat. The blue heeler is the alpha and would be happy being the only pet in the house.

Ken, my home is 40% human

not counting the dog, I have a good strong feeling that you are not a dog counter
