Really though, it doesn't matter what kind of activities or entertainment or food or drink or views you like. California has a world class version of it somewhere. Pretty much guaranteed. My favorite places are probably the Owens Valley and the Lost Coast.

I used to get Admission Day off. It was my favorite holiday, because I had a 3-day weekend one week after Labor Day. My wife and I used it for backpacking, as most people had ended their summer vacations at least one week earlier.
It was replaced by Cesar Chavez Day, which is a worthy successor.
As a side note: I don't think that the California Plastic Straw will be declared an endangered species anytime soon. They are still roaming the gutters, streams, beaches, and parks in great numbers.
