Had a "run in" with a driver of an automobile the other day

Forums:

Was walking in the street in the same direction as two cars, the first hits its breaks kind of hard as it approaches a stop sign and two pedestrians are in the midst of crossing the intersection.  Meanwhile, the car behind the first slams on their breaks and misses hitting the car by less than a foot.  Couldn't tell if it was a guy or a girl, but they had their window down and I heard him/her yell at the car for hitting their breaks and then honked the horn.  I was only 6-8 feet away, so I said "there are pedestrians in front of that car" ... at which point I can't recall exactly what he/she said specifically, but he/she wasn't relenting in being "right" and then eventually said to me something along the lines of "Who asked you?".  At which point I told him, "I"m just telling you!" ... then he gave me the finger and kept looking back as I yelled again "I'm just telling you!".  I then walked out into the intersection and jumped up and waved to try and get his/her attention, but that was that.  However, still blown away by how utterly wrong this person was, yet STILL continued to believe they were right and were willing to get into it.

Why were you walking in the street?

They probably had just gotten off a United flight.

I try to avoid unstable people when out driving.  Parking lots are where you meet the Crazies.  So I park far away from other vehicles,  if possible.

sidenote, Its amazing how cheesed off people get when given the finger

Sounds more like a run around and a run down.

>>They probably had just gotten off a United flight.

lol

Airplanes first, now cars. What's next, roller skates?

what a mess

i was in the midst of reading that horribly worded paragraph when i "LOLED"

Cheesed off? Oh Shit waffles that's a good one!

My county has the highest percentage of concealed carry permits in the nation, i try to keep my mouth shut and finger down. Easier said than done.

Stu has the right idea, park on the outskirts, walking is good exercise also.

Why were you walking in the street?<<<

Why not?  I was walking back to my car after having snowboarded and was just going where I had aimed to go ... actually minding my own business until I witnessed the near miss.  Along these lines, I guess my "jerk store" comment in response to being told "nobody asked you" ... would be that I would've had to spend MY TIME in court as a witness had the driver rear ended the car that stopped suddenly.   Could've been really bad if dominoe'd into pedestrians.  Since nothing happened, I'm now required to keep my mouth shut?

I wasn't the finger that pissed me off, but essentially being told to "mind my own business".

>> . would be that I would've had to spend MY TIME in court as a witness had the driver rear ended the car that stopped suddenly. <<

I doubt there would have been any need for your testimony. Rear-enders are very self explanatory. One car has a bashed in rear, the other has a bashed in front. Move along and mind your own business.

Do you get flipped-off often?

I generally abide by this sort of sentiment and realize not everyone "plays by the rules", but this person didn't look all that intimidating from where I stood ... even being half my age.   That's what kind of didn't add up.   I definitely wasn't looking for a fight, and would've tried to avoid any physical confrontation, but wasn't going to back down or concede any ground from what I just witnessed.

OK, I'll take the bait ... so if pedestrian was seriously hurt or worse, there wouldn't be a need for an eye witness?

It. Didn't. Happen.

And yes, the rear-ended, as well as the pedestrians would be satisfactory witnesses. A judge would most likely toss you in jail if you appeared in court.

Why did you add the second sentence after originally posting just that first bit?

At least it wasn't a run-around or a run-down.

i've found people who do wrong things reaaaallllly don't like being told they are doing something wrong. curious behavior.

A driverless Uber hit a pedestrian the other day.

Pedestrian tried to make eye contact, but...

I find  that the vast majority of people are nice enough,  but there are a dedicated minority who(m) really want to start Shit and be Jerks.

Could be that they are whacked-out on prescription drugs,  or they went to special schools to learn antisocial behavior.

What I've noticed is :: casually strolling about with a Wolf-ish looking Dawg attracts nice people,  and fends off the sociopathic types.

Hüsky is a great judge of Hu-person character.

I've found myself being in that driver's shoes when the car in front of me stops for no apparent reason, and will admit to saying "WTF?!?" ... until I see there's a pedestrian, ambulance, etc., then immediately realize my initial reaction was off base and quickly go along with the program.    It's also an interesting window into self-awareness.

However, this person didn't want to relent ... and I truly wasn't being a dick about it, basically just told him calmly and matter of fact that there happened to be pedestrians, but he/she wasn't going to let it go.

What I think may have possibly happened, is that this driver was preparing to do a "common move" at this particular intersection of not stopping at the stop sign, but following the lead car very closely and simply shadow that car through the intersection in order to make what is often a difficult left turn (since it's going up hill and traffic from the right is somewhat obscured).   So, it's possible the driver ultimately knew they were in the wrong in multiple ways.

There's a woman in town who has a Husky / Wolf mix ... and is definitely a little on the skittish side, she's also a bit crazy too (not that there's anything wrong with that) ... so it's an interesting dynamic to see people approach either her or her "dog".  However, I believe your rule of thumb still applies in so far as fending off the sociopathic types.

All speculative info your are providing on the drivers action, and you expected the driver to let it go, when you yourself would also not let it go

Careful with that axe Eugene, you might get your eye poked out

While I did speculate as to the "reasons", what I witnessed was not speculative.   It was simply an observation which I calmly relayed.  I repeated it calmly, but that's when driver escalated things ... was more than willing to let it go up until that point.

You made contact; they responded.

IMO, they "made initial contact" by yelling in a public space with their window open.

No, you made contact with them. You could have minded your own business, said nothing, whatever. When you make contact, they can respond. You seem unable to handle their response.

Not to be Judge Mental,

but my crazy neighbour told me his crazy tale one day,  long ago.

He spotted some fellow parked in the Fire Lane at the supermarket,  and proceeded to make conflict.

" Hey you can't park there !! It is a fire lane !!  You are interrupting the natural flow of parking !! "

So I think they are both Huge Idiots...  Total dumbbells.  What sort of idiotstick picks fights in supermarket parking lots ??

It almost escalated into physical conflict,  but definitely 'Yelling at each other' ...

Meanwhile,  I parked far far away,  somewhere invisible,  and went in the store to purchase my stuff.  I have only so much time on my hands,  and none of it can go toward parking-lot conflict.

After all,  there is Snow to shovel,  I want to learn Knitting,  and I'm working on my Novel.

Of course I made contact with them, but you seem to have diminished the true "perspective".

I agree about not wanting to get roped into something that's not really my affair, but sometimes things do cross into the realm of "greater good" ... vs. yelling at someone for simply taking up two spaces.

My driving philosophy is to err on the side of Stealth.

So I have not gotten a traffic ticket in almost 20 years.

A couple times,  the cops pulled me over for some minor BS.

"You were not speeding, but sort of driving in the middle of the Road."
"Yes,  Señor Officer,  there are many Deer out here,  so it is strategic to do that. I have a better chance of Safety if they jump out from the left or right."

They decided to agree with me on that one.  It is always Good to emphasize Safety if the cops pull you over.

Another time,  they said I made an illegal left turn,  but I explained that when I saw the flashing lights,  I pulled over into the Safest place at the time,  and did not notice the "No Left Turn" sign.

The young cop was actually very polite,  and did not give me a ticket,  but gave me directions how to get home.

That time it was a County Sheriff,  and they tend to be more well-behaved.

Of course he ran all my paperwork through the mainframe,  and it's always nice to find out that there are no warrants angel

My favorites of getting pulled over by the cops were when I actually stood up for my Rights (in a polite manner).

They say "Step out of the Car"  and I say "Are you saying that I am required to step out of the Car ??  My preference is to remain in my Car. "

So they will go back and forth with you a bit,  but never hit me with sticks.

And they have somewhat more respect for the citizen who pretends to defend  their constitutional Rights.

Maybe that does not work anymore,  who knows.

About a month ago I was the driver in the second car, except I DID rear end the car in front of me.  As we were both making a left turn through an intersection, the women driving the car in front of me stopped abruptly for a pedestrian who stepped out of a shaded area (he was tough to see) and when I went to stomp the brake, my foot slipped off the pedal (I was driving with road cycling shoes, something I've done for years, but won't do again).

I pulled over, got out and apologized to the woman, then called 911 (there was easily a couple thousand in damages).  Police called me back and said they no longer respond to accidents unless there were injuries and that the insurance companies would decide fault.

The woman and I exchanged info and went on our way.

It cost me time and money, but guess I was actually pretty "lucky" that there were no VigilFOMes lurking in the road... it could have gotten "ugly".

It's  nice that you worked it all out in a peaceful manner,  Mr. Googly.

However,  if I got in a fender-bender,  I would prefer the cops to show up and take statements.

Because there are lousy stinky people out there who(m) will cheat and lie and make up some other story compared to "I ran into D. Stu's car in the parking lot".

That exact scenario has happened with a couple of people I know.

So the cops can be useful witnesses to automobile collisions,  and make solid statements to the insurance companies.

I rear ended someone 10 years ago in Atlanta. I called the cops. He showed up, wrote me a ticket and I had to go to court for it.

I won't be calling the cops again for an accident.

As long as you stay on the right side of the law and keep your wits about you, there's nothing to fear!

In all seriousness, I do believe there's somewhat of a duty to interact with traffic more closely if need be in a small town moreso vs. a bigger city where people are more "anonymous" and perhaps expect a certain level of insulation from having undue attention placed upon them by another citizen.

still talking about this
