Growing indoor weed is bad...

Forums:

...for the environment, under certain circumstances:

"the emissions associated with growing 1 ounce of cannabis indoors is about the same as burning 7 to 16 gallons of gasoline, depending on where in the U.S. it’s grown."

"...These emissions come from the large amounts of electricity and heating required to keep the plants happy. Lighting is the most obvious energy sucking aspect of indoor pot production, but heating, cooling or, in some places, dehumidifying the air also requires huge quantities of electricity. Per the paper, many producers even pipe in carbon dioxide, which plants use for photosynthesis, as a way of accelerating growth."

^ continued:

"To figure all this out, the study authors made a model that calculated the carbon emissions incurred by typical indoor pot production and tweaked its parameters for different regions using weather data from more than 1,000 locations across the U.S., according to Gizmodo. In other words, the model could estimate, based on a region’s climate, how much energy it would take to keep a grow house at the optimal temperature and humidity for cannabis. The model turned that energy usage into equivalent emissions of carbon dioxide using government data on local power grids to account for the varying emissions associated with different modes of electricity production. Finally, the model also factored in so-called “upstream” emissions from materials such as fertilizer, water and fungicide used by indoor cannabis growing as well as “downstream” emissions from waste products.

On average, the model found that producing a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of dried cannabis released the equivalent of between 2 to 5 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere."

I think I read somewhere that Humboldt had the highest per capita electricity usage in CA.

Also mining Bit Coin is very bad too.

the grow i worked at for five years started out with two greenhouses and a total of 190 1k hps lights for flowering.  Last October when I quit, that facility had grown to 22 of those same greenhouses, plus 18 indoor rooms for a total of 4,800+ 1k hps lights for flowering.  Flower lighting by itself at that facility constituted $179k of the monthly electric bill.  That does not include hvac for all of the indoor rooms, the lighting and hvac for a clone room that can house 11k clones daily and lighting, or hvac for 2 massive veg rooms to support all of the flower rooms, or the cryogenic freezers for LLR from fresh frozen, or lab ovens, etc.  Insane amounts of electricity for bud.

Growing outdoors under the natural sunlight is the way to go, if you can. I enjoy all of the outdoor pics posted throughout the year.

I was contracting from a huge company that was flipping homes, and we had a home that was used as a grow house by the previous tenant. We had to strip out the lower four feet of drywall from all of the mold from the grow in the master bedroom and master bath. I remember that when we came in the floors were covered in plastic with rock on top of the plastic. What a mess

Joe , I bet you really are happy to have moved on .

don't forget all the plastic used in packaging

I thought hemp was going to solve global warming not make it worse

<all the plastic used in packaging>

Agreed. Some med dispensary brands do use glass jars, but a heck of a lot of brands still use plastic vials and foil/plastic envelopes --and I haven's seen a recycle symbol on them (someone said because they held medicines). Don't get me started on all the vape pens and batteries in the landfill. Oy.

But, but, smoking indoor weed is so good.

That article above is very misleading.  Electric use should be going down considerably with the improvement in LED grow lights.   3lbs+ a light is becoming standard with the new LEDs.

As far as packaging at dispensaries,  I hate it, but I also dont go to dispensaries for my cannabis.  It's much cheaper and fresher on the black market.

Alas, Redway is now 3,000 miles away (sad sigh).

However, the med bud in MD is pretty darn good and with the old-guy 20% discount costs 28 an eighth (and up). $200 oz is lowest I've seen for pre-packed small scrap buds. There are 5 outlets within a short drive in this part of suburbia. Very convenient.

But that being said, most everything is relatively dried out (they fear selling the mold) and I'd give my best one hitter to run my hands through some weight of fresh, moist, stinky goodness again.

Lol, jaz......yes,  I'm very glad i moved on. Love the early spring too :-)   I hope your mom is healing and you and your family are well .
