Greetings From Oakland

Forums:

Never been.  Halfway (Treasure Island), once.

Turns out we're staying right by Yoshi's.  It's like a ghost town outside.  Maybe if it wasn't Thanksgiving?

Big Friday.  We meet Da Boy's GF.  The barely-camouflaged, real reason behind this trip.

I was hoping to check out a dispensary, but the kid let his card expire.  He has an app, thosmiley.

It's kind of like Uber.

Lily's new knee didn't cause any security hiccups, but her backpack did.  They froze the image on-screen, and then poked around for a few minutes.  Still not sure what they think they saw.  We're thinking yogurt spoon.

I almost forgot that flying doesn't have to suck.

(((Virgin Atlantic)))

Happy Friday, freaks.

I have stayed in that area of Oakland many times in the last year, we always stay at the Homewood Suites right on the waterfront. Nice and mellow with a cool jogging path along the marina. Just watch out for that bay bridge traffic it is a killer. Enjoy your time, be safe you never know.

View from Oakland hills is nice.

I don't want you to be hungry.

Have a great visit and eat well!

Thanks, D.A.!

We ate @ Galeto last night.  Outstanding.

Also, Da Boy has a motorcyclesad.

Cross to other side of freeway and there's a lot going on. Walkable. Hutch (oyster bar), Swans Market (foodie food court), The Trappist (belgian beers, duh). Also a great comic book shop, Oakland's Chinatown, and the Oakland Museum of California, which can be good depending on exhibit.

Right in the neighborhood of Yoshi's in walking distance is Everett & Jones BBQ @ 2nd & Broadway, Merchants Saloon (Stiff drinks dive bar), Plank (wood fired pizza & bowling, nice), Lungomare (Italian brunch spot), Home of Chicken & Waffles (Soul Food, late night), Scott's Seafood ($$) and Peet's Coffee

51st & Telegraph restaurants Cholita Linda (Latin Cubano) , Burma Superstar, Aunt Mary's Cafe, Kansai, Urbano Latino, Bakesale Betty, Rosamunde Sausage Grill, La Calaca Loca (Mexican), Temescal Brewing & Kingfish Pub (outdoor bar, sports bar & shuffleboard) & Peet's Coffee and nearby is Rudy's Can't Fail (Emeryville or Oakland brunch spot/late night) and Homeroom (House of Mac & Cheese)

51st & Broadway Habit Burger Grill, Starbucks, Safeway, nearby is Clove & Hoof (Butcher & Sandwiches, Cheese Steak & Chicken Sandwich made Diners Drive ins and Dives on food network

I spend allot of time hanging with friends at Kingfish Pub & Merchants saloon and frequent most of these places.

Everett & Jones BBQ - it's been years, and only from the one on San Pablo in Berkeley - really, really good. REALLY GOOD.

I hate that show and Guy Fierri.  Seriously, fuck that guy.

Guy Fierri ruined my favorite restaurant. Fuck that guy.

He’s ruined a few of my favorites

Guy is annoying but the restaurants are still the shit though

Everett & Jones seemed to be closed today.  We grabbed a bite across the street at Slainte and watched disappointed 'cue lovers pull up/get dropped off and peer inside at the upside down chairs and walk away.  Seems like a few places here and in Berkeley closed down for today as well as yesterday ('tho E&J did not have a sign up saying so).  We crapped out at a bakery Da Boy wanted to hit.

Met one of Da Boy's roommates and her awesome dog, a pit bull puppy.

Had some snax in Berkeley.  He showed us where he rides his motorsickle (Grizzly Bear Blvd?).  Then dinner @ Marica and drinks at a kinda loud place up the street.  Pretty, pretty good.

And his GF is cool.  She and Lily clicked.

Thanks for the tips, folks.

We're out of here tomorrow night.

BTW, I don't recommend the chicken at The Bowling/Bocce place around here.  Not that we went in there.  But we did see several cases sitting in the sun on a loading dock.  Cluck that.

Hope you are having a Wonderful time in the Bayarea,  Mr. Bluest.

That's very good 'parenting skills'  of you and Mrs. Bluest to fly out & meet the new girlfriend.

By the way,  weather here in Jerseyland is nice,  for now.

from what I understand, this is what the good people of Oakland r grooving to out in the streets right now:

He showed us where he rides his motorsickle (Grizzly Bear Blvd?)

I imagine that's Grizzly Peak Blvd. - on top of the world, yes? I spent a lot of late teen time up in those hills...

Sorry about Everett & Jones being closed, but it sounds like you had a great day. I'm happy for you.

If there is something the Bluest of Notes knows, it's BBQ, so it's a shame E&J was closed.

Safe travels, B and L.!

I imagine that's Grizzly Peak Blvd. - on top of the world, yes? I spent a lot of late teen time up in those hills...<<

Ha. Yes.  I remembered it was "Peak" just as the 'puter was powering down last night.  Still a teen-ish hang, but maybe a bit different.

Unless you and your crew were pulling up with take-out sushi, J.  I give 'em props for the reusable chopstix.

Youngish folks, families, couples.  A very intense looking guy who, it turns out, was there to do some "bouldering". It's a thing.  Really.

A lot of bikers, some solo, some in groups of 10-20.  I know that guy.  That's the smaller version of my bike.  THAT guy's crazy, but he seems to know a lot about evading the police . . .

********************

W&B for moi, while Ian and Lily are out ingredient shopping.  She's making picadillo for Ian and his roomies.  I will play with Bella the Pup, unless she's at doggie daycare, and buzz on legal fruits of the earth. Then, we're supposed to make a quick appearance at the GF's . . . (aunt's? cousin's?) family soiree pre-flight.

Hope to be at our local diner by 7:30 AM (a post-flight tradition).   Probably be back at work by mid-afternoon.

See yas on the Eastie side.

Yes, Grizzly Peak is a little different now, I guess, we were just a bunch of stoners and trippers back then. Tilden park was a wonderful place to spend that kind of time.

The thing that would've been cool about E&J is that they are making Oakland style barbecue (sauce), probably different from the east. You would've had the bicoastal barbecue knowledge.

wishing you easy travels

Grizzly peak turnouts have become dangerous after dark with roaming gangs and gentrification in the east bay. The UCal Berkeley turnout is safe after dark for smoking a fatty "On top of the world"

Was up there one night burning one and there was a whale in the bay and it calls were echoing throughout the hills. That was cool.
